  1. Of course, some of the teams will not be as good as expected. Remember, many sites predicted us to win the conference. And, who would have predicted the collapse of Southern Miss. We can win on this schedule. It's just impossible to predict who won't make the grade.
  2. I get kinda tired of sites that compare us to Ohio State, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, etc. We are not at their level and if they have it they way they want it, we never will be. Paying the players will only make the gap bigger. I don't care if we ever play any of them again. I give no weight to sites that compare us to them either.
  3. Dickey was one game from being gone when we beat MT in 2001. His OC was a complete jerk. I enjoyed the bowl games, but never felt any connection to him. He just seemed to be a very negative person. To me, McCarney is the first REAL D1 coach we've had and I'm willing to give him a little more room. It took him 5 years to get Iowa State going, and he had his initial success here much quicker. I still think he will build this thing into a consistent winner.
  4. $MU, Southern Miss, La Tech. Drove to Southern Miss two years ago. Awesome trip and VERY nice fans.
  5. The Indians/Red Wolves will kick them twice. Good for the Geldings.
  6. So what? I can say that in 27 years of coaching, this is the ONLY North Texas staff that involved alumni in the recruitment process. I have offered many other coaches from other NT staffs to help and most gave me the "whatever" handshake and I never heard from them again. This staff was completely different. They identified the alumni on our staff and have tried to get them to help and to provide input as to the best way to reach potential recruits. They phoned me at home and asked lots of questions about how best to get the player they wanted. Even more important, they listened when I told them a player had very questionable character. They asked several times, but in the end, they took a pass (he ended up in the Sun Belt). Clinic talk is exactly that. They tell you just enough to get beat using thier stuff. I couldn't care less if our coaches speak at a clinic.
  7. This may be the most beautiful quote I've ever read on this board.
  8. Good for them, but I would rather see Army and the Geldings
  9. Once again, the Plano caravan was excellent. I brought 4 first timers. All were impressed with the entire coaching staff and the event as a whole. One signed up for the Mean Green Club on the spot. I did notice that everyone that spoke was careful to thank those in attendance and that they understood that they were preaching to the faithful. Also met the new Mean Green Club director (Jessica followed her new husband to Texas, can you believe that?). Fun event. Go Mean Green
  10. The stadium was cool to see a game in just because of historic value, but 20,000 for the UNT game just got swallowed up in there. Absolutely zero atmosphere. It was a lot like when we played in the Cotton Bowl years back and called it our home stadium.
  11. Derek Thompson completed 64% for 2896 yards with 16 TD and 13 INT. Andrew Smith completed 46% for 1206 yards with 7 TD and 9 INT. I would call that "far superior".
  12. The biggest differences between those teams were at QB and Special Teams. Both could run the ball, but the 2013 team was far superior at QB and the Special Teams were a HUGE factor. Each of those teams had superior defenses. I would say that the 2002 team would have lost to Ball State maybe Rice too. I say the 2002 team would have gone 7-6, with a bowl win.
  13. Just watched the highlights. Saw our WR corps make more plays in 8 minutes than I did all last year. I think that by itself will make our QB play better. I know our QB's didn't play anything close to the level we hoped for last year, but our WRs were just as terrible. Looking forward to seeing more from them like the Spring Game showed.
  14. One more thing about a Spring Game... both coordinators have agreed beforehand not to hurt the other. The defense will not run anything other than base fronts and very limited stunts. If the offense has something that they can run against our base defense and hurt our defense on a pretty consistent basis, the offense will NOT run that play. Neither side will make ANY attempt at an adjustment. Why show that to the other teams scouts what hurts you or what you could/would do about it? Don't get too worked up over anything you see or didn't see today. And if the #2's win, so what?
  15. I coached a lot of Spring games. Goal #1 is to stay healthy. Goal #2 is to be vanilla. If you were expecting to see the new stuff today, you were only kidding yourself. All of that will come in Dallas in September. The Spring game has zero value to the coaches. It is only there for the parents and the alumni. Enjoy it for what it is. Go Mean Green!
  16. And, I can count 17 of our players that have been drafted since 1971.
  17. Also, I believe Cedric Hardeman was a 1st round pick of the 49ers and Leonard Dunlap was a 1st round pick of the Colts in 1971.
  18. Maybe I'm missing something, but wasn't Joe Greene a 1st round NFL pick?
  19. What I would like is for sites like the DMN to start listing the series with SMU as 2-25-1 when the Ponies were cheating and 3-3 since the Death Penalty. Even playing field, even results... for now.
  20. You can try to treat the cancer, but if it doesn't respond to treatment, you have to cut it out. If you don't, it will kill the body. From what I understand, he is a good kid off the court and especially in the classroom. All of that is terrific, but he appears to be the only one that has not bought in to the program. Whether you agree or not as a player, you have to do what your coaches want. You simply cannot have one guy running his own offense or defense. And if you can't take being removed from the game, you are not mature enough for this level of play. I hope he learns his lesson this time... but I doubt it.
  21. I was sitting right behind the UNT bench during the game. Harris was insubordinate and disrespectful. When Benford took him out of the game, he ran his mouth at Benford and the assistant coaches. He slapped away the hands of his teammates and initially refused to leave the bench during a timeout. He is clearly a cancer and my hope is that Benford will send him back to Milwaukee. Everyone else seems to have bought in and the team is playing together. Harris needs to go.
  22. My last year at coaching, Texas Tech did the same thing to one our kids. Our RB committed before his senior year. After the year, Tech fired their coach and hired Kingsbury. The kid contacted Tech and asked if he still had a scholarship or if he needed to look around. Kingsbury assured him that he still had a scholarship and he had no need to look anywhere else. One week before signing day, an assistant coach called him to say that Tech was pulling their offer. NT had recruited him in the beginning, but already had a full allotment ready for signing day and wasn't willing to do the same thing that Kingsbury had just done. He ended up at UTSA. I would only root for Texas Tech if they were to play $MU.
  23. Until Wilson stops putting the ball on the deck...He has all kinds of talent, but Mac won't play him if he cannot trust him not to fumble.
  24. I really think we will end up with a good class this year. I see us filling in with JUCO kids where we missed out on Mac's first couple of classes. Don't be surprised if one more really good one shows up in the next few days.
  25. For once UNT90, I completely agree with you. The cheating will be full scale and out of control... and that's the way the P5 wants it.
