Dr. Hurley killed our program. Bob Tyler was only here one year. Hurley wanted us to become an academic institution like the service academies. He did not have a high regard for athletics. Even simple things like tailgating were banned. As far as the flying worm, we also suffered from letting each new coach and AD change the logo and shade of greed like we were a high school. It especially chapped me when our AD did not get us a home playoff game when we were #4 in the nation because he wanted to go to Reno instead. We suffered from lack of leadership, funding, and vision for a long time. Thankfully, I believe those days are behind us. Now we are just playing catch up for eternity.

They seem to lose confidence easily. It also seems to be a different issue each game. Turnovers killed us against WKU. Free throws have been an issue other times. Defense has been an issue others. The coaching term for this is "chasing the fleas around the dog". It is frustrating as a coach when you focus on a problem, fix it, and then a new problem comes up or maybe one you fixed three weeks ago comes back. I also wonder how much her assistant coaches leaving each year hurts the continuity of the team.

FAU is tough at home. All 3 losses are on the road.

In the words of the basketball great Ron Washington "That's how basketball go".

I think there were only 2 techs called. The first foul on #22 was a personal foul. The ODU head coach went on the floor and got the first tech. One of the ODU assistant coaches continued to run his mouth and got the second tech. That is why we shot 4 free throws. Two for each tech.

This thing was weird from the start. Townley turned an ankle in the first minute. We turned the ball over 29 times. Still, we were only trailing by 1 after 3. Just didn't look like ourselves. The harder the girls tried, the worse it got. It wasn't just 1 girl. Still think this team will be there at the end.

The best player for Marshall could barely get a shot off. Impressive defensive performance by the Eagles. Q didn't even play her best game and the outcome was never really in doubt. Good win for the Mean Green.

Just shows how our season went and the continued improvement through the year. Early we lost to a La Tech team that we would have beaten later in the year. Late in the year we beat two teams that ended up ranked ahead of us. I'm looking forward to next year.

Best North Texas Basketball Game You Have Ever Attended?
UNT86 replied to UNTLifer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
First two that come to mind were beating NE Louisiana to get into the NCAA in 1987 and beating Purdue last year. Lots of good times to choose from. Beating WK last year when all the NCAA promos had them pictured and the announcers were all over how good Bassey was... except that he wasn't. Also the CBI win over San Francisco. Loudest I've heard the place was when Smart started a 1 on 3 fast break our first possession, pulled up, and drained a 3. -
So now we get to play one of the conference favorites without playing for two weeks. Awesome (to be read with sarcastic voice).

Just like a ranked UTSA was going to curb stomp us..... but they didn't.

You have hope because that is what you do when it is YOUR school. There is always hope. You look at all that could go wrong. The schools on our schedule are looking at NT saying "They won 5 in a row and beat a ranked team to finish the season. They were one blown call away from beating a good Liberty team. They had chances to win their bowl game. They got better as the year progressed. They have almost everyone back on both sides of the ball and the ones they graduate are replaceable. If they can find an above average QB, his team is ready to excel." My gosh, we have been to a bowl 5 of the last 6 years. Be positive. This is about to be a really good time to be green.

I don't know if it qualifies as big, but I think a basketball weight room somewhere in The Pit would be great too.

I choose to support our teams, especially when it isn't going well. Anyone can support the team when things are going great. It takes a lot more when it isn't. Some choose to show up, some don't. But I will tell you that it the great times are much more enjoyable if you've had the fortitude to stick in tough times.

We sold every ticket made available to us. The bowl gave us 5000, Miami 5000, and kept 5000. Many of the 5000 the bowl kept were prime seats.

The Chaps lost. What a shame. Was it cold and rainy?

DRC: UNT defensive back Jordan Rucker enters transfer portal
UNT86 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
When there are three freshman listed ahead of you on the depth chart, this probably isn't a bad move. I just hope he doesn't lose too many credits and graduates at some point. -
Again, not the Athletic department. The Pit is controlled by the academic side. Athletics can't change a light bulb around there. It has to go through the academic side. Why is this so hard to understand? The Pit was not built with Athletic money and CANNOT be controlled by the Athletic department. Thank your Longhorn and Aggie friends in the state legislature. UT and the Aggies built theirs with public funds then changed the rules so the rest couldn't and all of us litte guys got shafted. Put the blame where it goes.
-
SH changed the defense. Early they were daring us to make our 3's. We did and after that, they changed the defense.
-
" I know the athletic department doesn't control that but can't someone with the school address it. Maybe it IS time for a new facility!!!" This is the whole problem and always has been. We need out of the Pit.

DRC: Noble's key 3 sparks UNT in win over over Southern
UNT86 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Southern was hyper aggressive on defense and seemed to invite us to drive the lane. When we did, they collapsed the defense and we had trouble making shots in the paint. When we started driving and kicking the ball out, the threes were mostly uncontested. That is when we pulled away, but we spent the whole second quarter turning the ball over. This team is deep. All three girls that play inside had trouble in the first half. In the second half, Lampkin started playing better and made a huge difference. -
My guess is that Ken Bahnsen is in as a player and a coach.

The long sleeve shows black in the photo, but when you click on it the site says it is grey like the short sleeve.

The Talons were a big deal in the 70's. By the 80's, not so much. I am surprised to learn they are still around. What exactly do they do? They certainly are not a spirit group anymore.
