  1. Midwestern has been a good basketball school for quite a while. They didn't have football there when I attended in my first go around at college, but I'm showing my age (and I WILL be 65 day after tomorrow).
  2. Knowing his high school English teacher (Iowa City lady), and hearing her say of him, "he knew what he wanted to be back then (football coach), and he didn't see any use for English class" makes me smile now, realizing that the guy, whatever he thought about his education back then has become one excellent communicator. She was happy to learn of his having become quite the disciplinarian. Her husband, a big Hawkeye booster (plays golf with Fry at times), did mention McCarney having been the first of Fry's coaching staff to move off and up in the world of coaching, and mentioned how well McCarney recruited Texas while at Iowa State.
  3. I don't see how he couldn't be at or near the top of our list, unless he's making so much as an assistant we couldn't "make an offer he can't refuse".
  4. Yes, that's pretty sad. On a not completely unrelated note, I hope that, assuming we do need to hire a new wbb head coach, we don't dismiss the possibility of hiring from among Baylor's assistants just because Kim Mulkey has been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy (leading some to think, "hey, an assistant may be promoted from within there). The key word in the headlines (just one of the headlines, mind you, is that this is a temporary paralysis of some of the facial muscles. I've known two people who have had this problem, and both overcame it to some extent; I say some, because I only saw the one fellow two times after his diagnosis and any observable symptoms seemed to be minor the first time, and not noticeable the second. I feel that I should mention, the first time after this diagnosis, he was in a professional setting, where he was receiving what might have been perceived as a merciless ribbing by one who had a long working history with him, if one didn't realize the genuine affection this protagonist had for him, making me think, "would it have really been a bad thing if the other fellow had "walked on eggshells" in that situation, rather than carrying on with the typically spirited give and take with the "victim". The other individual, my choir director for maybe 10 years now, was diagnosed with this maybe 7 or 8 years ago, and I don't notice any symptoms now. My short version is, hey, this college athletic coaching is a brutal business in some ways; one has to hope that our decision makers can see the difference between permanent disabling and ultimately fatal conditions, and what may be temporary distractions for some coaches or coaching candidates and make the best decision for all concerned. Oh yeah, and I do think there are a couple of Baylor's assistants who would be a great hire for us, with Bill Brock leading the way and Damion McKinney a serious contender. Baylor wbb roster, including coaches.
  5. +1, since I had not seen it before. My wife called me at work to tell me about it, but it has to be seen to appreciate it. It gave me a smile!
  6. Maybe it portrays making $2M very well. Suppose he's married to a woman who's happy enough with things the way they are, and he thinks, "what if I get down to Texas, have a job with lots more travel, wife gets unhappy, files for divorce, eating up that $1.5M differential faster than my career winning percentage"? I mean, a guy has to at least run these scenarios mentally, if not in a press release. Yeah, he has ties to this area, but there's reasons people leave home to work elsewhere.
  7. But not enjoying it so much.
  8. I'm really sorry this happened, and especially for the sake of his family.
  9. So, that's what they're calling it these days?
  10. You should tell us how much you've contributed towards Apogee debt retirement, challenge the rest of us to match that stupendous amount, then provide us sufficient identification that a life insurance policy could be purchased on you and those you "socialize with". Boone Pickens would be flattered that we honored one of his admirers in that way. See, it's not so hard to take a few scattered "facts" and construct a coherent narrative, now is it?
  11. Fact checking?
  12. So, as Kram1 so reasonably might ask, what have you done to help?
  13. Welcome to where you were already home, Tony!
  14. So many people don't seem to get that SMU will never be part of Dallas because its located in University Park. I guess that mistaken belief does give them the best of both worlds; to never support anything in Dallas, but expect to be supported by Dallas. Oh, nearly forgot, June Jones inner city ministry. Is that in inner University Park, to the unfortunates along Turtle Creek?
  15. You would be thinking of the "El Capitan", recipient of a recent $2.5 million remodel by the "Hotel Heroes of West Texas", Joe and Lanna Duncan. I have not been there, but have enjoyed stays at a couple of their other projects, the El Paisano in Marfa and the Stone Village in Fort Davis, and I AM CERTAIN that the Duncans have made another great place to stay in Van Horn. My wife and I go out the Davis Mountains area about once every other year, and ALWAYS have at least one meal at their Hotel Limpia dining room when we're out that way (I highly recommend the Rio Grande Chicken). By the way, Lanna Duncan holds a graduate degree from UNT (bachelors from Penn State). Maybe she never read the stuff about UNT being a place for people who "settle" on it. I wish I could post the article I read about her and Joe starting out at the Limpia (his family's business, but still requiring 16 hour days of hard work by the Duncan's). Anyway, here's a little reading: Hotel heroes of small town Texas.
  16. I have no reason to doubt what you've said, and find it refreshing in comparison to the SMU-like putdowns (many by GMG.com memebers!) of our fair alma mater, which in many, if not most degree offerings, ranges from world beater to regionally competitive. And our women and music are LEGEND!
  17. The only thing that really worries me about him is that he seems to try too hard sometimes; like the ball will get turned over and instead of getting back downcourt to play defense, he'll try to steal the ball back. I think the prescription of some, to maybe be more serious or whatever, may be the exact opposite of what he needs, which could be to play looser. The talent is there to see, but there is so much talent that doesn't get people where they want to be. Like people said, he hasn't played enough yet to gain the knowledge and skill that he needs. Just wait.
  18. What if you gave up on UNT football and basketball and next season both started a decades long dominance of the reallybighowevermany conference? Then, I bet you'd feel really silly. I guess I'm a fan because I'm an alumni, and I've met some of the greatest people anywhere following North Texas sports.
  19. Yeah, I was wondering about the intensity of that celebration. The whole Mean Green basketball nation, mens' and womens', must get over this "13" or "20" up with lots of game left means all that much.
  20. Save a goat, double down on toppers!
  21. It was great seeing The Tasty Greek and UNTFlyer, among many other Mean Green faithful, on tv near the end of the ASU game, obviously enjoying what was by then an apparent victory! Sorry about the runon sentence.
  22. Heck, it sounded like a fairly positive slant from someone I certainly don't consider a Mean Green "homer".
