  1. So did he end it by leaving, or did Canales/Mac end it by winning a showing wins were possible?
  2. But would it have been that good of a "fit" for him or us? I think we made the right hire, at first based on thinking we would be setting ourselves up for Frascilla being unhappy with what we could pay him, now more along the lines of Benford finally gets his chance to call the shots, wants to make the most of it, and has the ability to take us to the next level.
  3. He'll do great, but "marihuana"? What happened to Denton that we can't spell marijuana right? Not saying let's bring back the Cowboy Mafia or anything, but???
  4. I'm sure your expectations are not beyond your level of contributions.
  5. 1. I still want the number one versus number to be based on an 8 or 16 team playoff, but yeah, those probably were the best two teams last year. I just think LSU will be well motivated this year. 2. Those first year coaches last year were pretty darned good, but I think we will have a good defensive team this coming season, and pick up 1 or 2 more wins.
  6. I love it when you talk like that! However, it's hard to imagine that LSU won't play like they have something to prove after looking so bad in the the mythical national championship game last year. Yep, I would love it if we could pull that off against LSU. I wonder if it might be more meaningful to beat Houston though, maybe give us bragging rights in some recruiting battle. I just happened to be in Boone, N.C., home of Appy State, a few weeks after that win over Michigan. You could tell that the locals were quite proud, but I did notice they lost 2 out of their next 6 games and were only cochampions of their conference that year, whereas they were both conference and national champs the previous 2. They haven't done quite as well since, and I kinda wonder why they couldn't get more notice during the recent realignment moves with all they've done at the FCS level. I'm sure the long bus trip from Charlotte is an issue. Still, I wish I'd had the time to go see a game while I was there in 2007 (was on a family outing to nearby Blowing Rock, on the Blue Ridge). If you've never been in that part of the world during autumn foliage season, I highly recommend it!
  7. Uh, it's the Wall Street Journal; we've just got to win, baby, win to get any respect from them. Do well enough and they may give us coverage like they did Euless Trinity football a few years back.
  8. When some of us from work went there not long ago, those who got the tacos were envious of my burrito!
  9. You do realize that the master plan for their campus (along with that of Trinity University, the Tower of the Americas, and restoration of "La Villita", all in San Antonio) was done by the architectural firm of former North Texas boy O'Neill Ford (took drafting classes at North Texas State Teachers College starting in 1917 before getting a "certificate of architecture" from the International Correspondence School. Of course, some may not like some of his architectural stylings (most of the houses he designed were so-called "Mid Century Modern"). He was Texas own Frank Lloyd Wright in using native materials and designs that fit buildings into the local landscape and culture. Think "Little Chapel in the Woods" and the Denton City Hall and Civic Center as far as Denton buildings. Of course, some might not think so well of a man who has been described as instrumental in creating the modern ranch style house, but I'd have to consider him a "local boy made good". Here's a link from Mike Cochran, perhaps THE historian of Denton: http://www.mikecochran.net/Ford.html
  10. Maybe the plan is to get up by a couple of scores and then use that big O-line to maintain possession. Don't spend any more time on defense than you really need to. Oh, and use one of them as FB in short yardage situations.
  11. As an old Wichita Falls boy, it really makes me feel good to see coach Mac and his assistants working that area. There is some great football tradition at the Old High School as well, but Rider High is obviously a place to find some big time talent.
  12. That being the case, then best wishes to him. And honestly, he sounds like someone who would be worth the risk for a place like UT or UW. Of course, UNT needs to take risks, but they need to be well targeted. I liked the idea of going after the QB from Colorado, but also liked that when it didn't work out, we used the scholly to bring in someone who plays DT, a position where we need immediate depth.
  13. Women say the same thing about basketball players.
  14. Well, I think you've gotten to the heart of the matter. I'm sure that Romney will try to finesse this (a mandate at the state instead of the federal level, therefore States Rights?), but not sure what else he did while governor of Massachusetts.
  15. Our chances are better than UTSA, Houston, or Rice. And, hey, LSU and Alabama, suck it! Honestly though, both the young man and the linked article just seem confusing. It says he's from Lancaster, Texas, but wants to play closer to home in Seattle. He likes the idea of playing basketball and football, but mostly football. The UW Huskies have offered him the chance to do both, so that sounds like the place for him, except that he hasn't completely ruled out UT and stays in contact with their recruiting coordinator. It's interesting to think back to when UW football ruled the PAC-10 (or however many they were back then), and how far they had fallen by the end of the Ty Willingham era. Don James must have been one great coach! I think this is the kind of situation that we're hopefully moving away from, and that we seem to be attracting guys who want to go to school and play football at UNT. Not that shopping around is a bad thing, but there's a right way to do these things.
  16. If we had a "Summertime Blues" forum, these kinds of threads could be moved there. Uh, should I have said "Summertime Greens"? There is one thing to remember about looking at a photograph: if you can't figure it out, quit trying to. Some art forms, "Modern", "Minimal", or whatever, require analysis; others like "Photography" or "Music", you either like them or you don't. If you don't, turn your attention elsewhere
  17. Well, it's been a good day for the rule of law, although a long time coming. I guess I WAS a bit surprised by the decisiveness of the eventual actions, but honestly, folks, don't forget that there are good citizens in Pennsylvania. I think we should give a lot of credit for the courage of those who took the stand to tell of the assaults against them. Mentally, I don't really want to think of them anymore so much as "victims"; perhaps "survivors" would be a better word. For the way they made their own case when they got their day in court, I have to salute them.
  18. Yes, they need to pay a price, for sure, and the endowment should be considered fair game in civil actions, but I think we should remember that Sandusky, monster that HE was, was, as the judge said "found guilty by a jury of his peers". And neighbors. I do know I've encountered Penn Staters out in the world of work (some who also attended and earned degrees from North Texas). Some of them were among the finest people I could hope to meet. But, maybe it's having been with the City of Dallas (City that killed Kennedy-don't know why LA isn't the City that killed Robert Kennedy) most of my working life that makes me leery of collective guilt. And yes, those who covered up for Sandusky do need to face the fullest sanctions of the law for what they perpetuated by their inactions.
  19. Thanks. I like that CHS had their deepest playoff run during his senior season. That kinda reminds me of how that Glen Rose was a school which had done almost nothing football wise before Derek Thompson played there.
  20. However this happened, I see it as very, very good news. For some reason, I had wondered if this would happen. Of course, not all the DT recruits (3?) will be ready to play this year, but it gives us a better chance to address that nagging depth problem at DT. Oh, and as an old Wichita Falls boy myself, welcome to UNT, Dylan!
  21. Justin Gaines kind of got the Euless Trinity to Montana State pipeline going when he was an assistant there. I think it started with QB Denarius McGhee, who has played well there; and in the same class, linebacker Na'a Moeakiola. Since then, Tray Robinson went there from Nebraska after deciding he wasn't going to see the field much at RB behind Rex Burkhead. I think that after Gaines left, these players were more or less recruiting each other. I hope he can get some guys from Trinity to come to UNT and make their mark. I look forward to seeing what former Trinity QB Willie Hubbard can do. Should we bring in Chris Barnett? We have the coaching staff I trust to make that decision, probably after a chat with Trinity HC Steve Lineweaver.
  22. Well, not just "Baby", but "Oh, Baby", as in "Oh Baby, it's really small..."
  23. I was feeling hostile towards the dude, even though wanting to feel sorry for some guy with a wife who thinks she sees all from a service road. Does she not realize that the first concrete poured for Apogee was for a womens' restroom? Then I went out to skyscrapercity.com and actually did feel sorry for him and USM, what with the thread for their stadium having only about 8 replies, half dismissive, with the next to the last one hijacking the thing with a google earth view of the Hattiesburg sewage lagoons (identified by the last reply, "you know, the smelly stuff"). If we think it's hard being green, just think of what it's like being from a place described by one as "Southern Mississippiesh". Here's that link: http://www.skyscrape...d.php?t=1402550 Here's the link to the thread for Apogee (go to the first post of the fourth page for a link to KingDL1's pics on GMG.com): http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=716944 Of course, there's some disrespect in there about our recent lack of winning, but just thought I'd link to something that's not really "homerish" one way or the other. Folks, truth and beauty are in the eye of the beholder.
