ESPN: La Tech's Sonny Dykes To Cal

Hmmm, OP hijacks own thread. GMG oldtimers, much history of this? -
Louisiana Tech passes on going to bowl?

So, are you saying that La Tech screwed the pooch? -
Benford Coaches Show Tonight at 7 from Rudy's

I wish I'd been more mature at 45. The thing is: never stop learning. -
You know, if Olawale does well as a Raider, a lot of us are going to be asking one question: wtf weren't our coaches seeing that the professionals did? I really think he could be good in short yardage situations, maybe be useful in scoring within the red zone. I guess no team I follow has needed those attributes, though.

+1 dude. Harsh, but got a laugh out of me.

Hmmm, yeah I hate that, especially since I met we had a guy working on a temporary assignment in our office last year who is a friend of Tony Mitchell's family. But, according to him, his mother didn't want him entering the draft without prior knowledge of being a high first round pick. I'm kind of wondering if, that not happening, he transfers somewhere. Still, it didn't seem like last year (partial season) was seen as sufficient preparation, and I have to wonder about the benefit of yet another change in scenery for Tony. It just seems like the coaches could come up with a role in which he could thrive, even if double and triple teamed. It almost seems like we need to figure out what we've done in the last two games against ULL at the Super Pit, and not do that.

Is tomorrow a two-fer double header?

So, did you enjoy that WBB game? -
Ok, poor pitiful you that I corrected a glaring spelling error. Are you going to ignore the question about whether it's more important that Tony Mitchell builds character as preparation for entry into the draft or that Tony Mitchell help this team win?

RV needs to be held accountable...

If it dropped Canadian pennies, that would be a good thing, since they were discontinued, and you can only buy 2 of the remaining commemoratives per order. Each MGC member should buy 2 of them and contribute them to a fund to upgrade our coaching hires. However, NT03 may have at least part of a better plan: bet against UNT athletic teams and contribute the winnings to improve our athletic teams. -
Well, even if this season builds "charter" (charter player?) for Mitchell, it won't matter that much for us if he doesn't help us win.
-
Ok, time to check my lottery numbers. I promise, if I win it all tonight, I'll donate $100k of the proceeds to a buyout. Hmmm, a man needs to be careful what he promises; (yes, I'm channeling Cap'n Call from "Lonesome Dove").

Well, that's a good point, and we're starting to learn more about the downside to going down that road. I still want to look at (or read someone else's analysis) about this season's new coach records in the FBS, comparing the assistants vs. those with previous head coaching experience. I think some of the MAC schools that have done well this year and last were previous head coaches, but from FCS and D2 levels. But, there's just something you like about experience; Peterson (sp?) new WBB coach, doesn't have a great record so far, but I think he'll do great, based on his past record. An assistant, it just seems like you never know.

Fern? Fran?

So, here's my plan: start attending some of the WBB games. I don't know what to expect from them, so no expectations, no disappointments. I think Peterson (Petersen?) coming from a head coaching position, will show us why most fans want new hires to have head coaching experience.

+1 for asking a good question. Maybe the real question is, how do we that kind of quarterback signed and starting at QB?
-
I've been thinking that since early in the last season. If we don't step up our passing offense in a major way, we will continue to regress. And I'm not saying it's any one player or coach's fault, but it's the responsibility of the coaching staff to make whatever corrections are needed in this vital aspect of the game. I started wondering today if the problems we have passing are just exacerbating our red zone problems; teams putting 8 or more in the box are having less field to protect against our run and stacking it up at (or behind) the line once we're within the 20. Oh, and sorry for being part of the hijack crew on an article about defense.

Conference USA responded as well as it could have

Well, they've looked pretty strong when they played us in recent years. Bailiff, their HC, seems like a good one.- 19 replies

Someone mentioned in another thread that the coaches are determined to put Trice at corner. Another thing that DMac mentioned lately was insufficient depth for nickel (sp?) and dime packages; maybe this is part of immediately addressing an obvious need: talent in the secondary. After the homecoming loss, I stopped by Metzler's bbq (a favorite Denton joint for me), and was fortunate in meeting Roy Metzler himself, who said we won't be successful until we get the guys for pass coverage. I have to agree with Roy on that one.

Up until I read this post today, I would read the basketball forum while riding home from work on the TRE. No more. Accidents involving trains? Don't be around them people. I'm convinced that I stopped a woman from stepping in front of a DART train after we detrained from the TRE when she was walking with her head down. We debriefed each other later and couldn't decide whether I had yelled "wait" or "whoa". Always be aware when around trains people, I'm not kidding. As for basketball; I had a sinister feeling about yesterday and decided not to make that special effort to get to Denton. I don't regret it; hope to see y'all at a home game soon. This Saturday, are we playing ULL at home? They schooled us last time I saw them in Denton.

Conference Realigment: Kissing Your Sister
eulessismore replied to shaft's topic in Mean Green Football
As long as some teams will be in their new conferences, it's more like using your sister to practice kissing. -
Shhh, the realignment powers that be don't want anyone looking at a map.

+1. but this is all starting to sound familiar.

That's what I've been thinking. Playoffs are coming; get ahead of the curve.
