Two words: Zed Evans. And I expect others of the new and improved secondary players will be out there. I am interested to see whatever changes the new ST coach (Tommy Perry?) will bring, as he was supposedly a good get.

Well, this is going to make it harder to watch passes being thrown at the feet of receivers behind the line of scrimmage.

Collected wisdom: UNT Coach Dan McCarney
eulessismore replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I've got to question the part where he says as a young man he didn't have plans for being a football coach. I know his high school English teacher, and she said he knew at that time he wanted to be a coach. -
+1 for a hell of a first post, and welcome to the board. You new around these parts?

I found this DRC article on our signing class that mentions him as having "signed" with Air Force, but I never found anything about him being at Air Force. http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130207-mccarney-pleased-with-states-reception-of-unt.ece I think it's going to be confusing finding information about him on the Internet, due to Air Force having had a player there named "Eric Evans" who graduated a couple of years ago after playing quite well. But, even if he just got "signed" by Air Force, he must be a pretty good student/athlete. I use quotes for "signed" because the service academies follow different rules for "scholarships". The content about his high school career has him playing as a senior in the 2010 season; with him coming here as a "walk on" in Spring 2013, that leaves a year and a half that seems somewhat uncertain, although if he signed with Air Force, I suppose he attended school there; I just can't find anything on the Internet about him actually being there. If someone knows how to do a web search on "Erick Evans" and "Air Force" without returning anything that's "Eric Evans" and "Air Force", that might make it easier.

How's the Defense Going to Be?

Hey, thanks for the laugh! You make me proud to also work for the City of Dallas. I nominate you for best sense of humor among all policemen I have ever known. -
How's the Defense Going to Be?

I think you're pretty much on the mark. I had a lot of respect for Cantly as a person and player, but like Sir Calvin, he had a redshirt season. After that, he played some DE (a coaching mistake in my opinion), and eventually became a DT starter So, even if Sir Calvin doesn't start, I expect he will be in the rotation. My guess is that they will try to redshirt Moore, but he sounds like someone who could be playing and in the rotation if needed. Is anyone else thinking Abbe may be playing like he has something to prove this year? -
One about Thompson, another about the lack of positions being locked up: http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130817-football-thompson-sharp-in-final-scrimmage.ece http://www.dentonrc.com/sports/colleges/north-texas-headlines/20130817-football-final-scrimmage-key-for-unt-depth-chart.ece

My theory, which I just developed a minute or two ago, is that the coaches are starting out Thompson for the first few games so as to have more time to get DW coached up by time for conference games.

My apologies if this has already been posted, but here it is: http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/m-footbl/ntex-m-footbl-body.html Really though, about the only thing new it has is that Erick Evans just came into the program this week. From the lack of anything else, I guess he WAS the only one scoring any offensive points.

Closed practices, scrimmages, and oaths of secrecy?

Damn...for that to be the one thing we DO know. -
Can someone get me back on the Green Kook-Aide?
eulessismore replied to KingDL1's topic in Mean Green Football
Mac is going to let the defense run one offensive series from scrimmage every game. -
I can kind of understand the practices being closed, as there might be something opposing teams could find out, but how can there be such a lack of information about anything UNT football related at this point? So, I think we should endeavor to list what we know; I mean, at least maybe what we know we didn't know, or still don't know, such as: We know that we didn't know that there was a competition for the QB position until last weekend. We know that today we don't know why Derek Thompson is now leading in the QB competition. We know that we didn't know until today that a new running back, Erick Evans has joined the team. We know that most of us don't know how that Adman knows that Evans scored 2 rushing touchdowns. We know that we don't know if there were any other offensive scores in today's scrimmage.
-
Yeah, I think that's the real mystery of the whole thing, kinda like "Derek Thompson emerged as leader, because...." And the National Security Council can't come up with contractors who won't leak whatever to the press. Not a real possibility here, since the "media" is stonewalling the inquiring minds.

Well, let us never forget that the first great Derek Thompson controversy was whether we would regret having wasted a year of his eligibility on a few late plays in one game.

4 at quarterback, 8 other quarterbacks at other positions.
-
yeah, finally some football stuff to talk about in the football forum.
-
I'd say the key words were "tend to agree". Honestly, I think it would be great for Berglund to pull it all together and become the starting QB, since that "could" lead to a redshirt year for Williams, but I'm just glad to be hearing something that suggests the coaching staff is taking a hard look at this passing thing.
-
I tend to agree; recent time spent practicing and playing counts for something. It's like someone I remember being quoted on another subject recently, "in music there is no free ride". and I do believe BB has been working hard. It's just that DW has the benefit of having played last year.

UNT Scrimmage fails to produce front-runner at quarterback
eulessismore replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't see why anyone is taking it as anything other than a positive that Mac and Chico are giving more scrutiny to the QB position. Last year, I brought my brother-in-law, visiting from Boise, to the South Alabama game. Being from Boise, he seems to have seen a lot of college football, and said something like, "everything looks good, except for the passing game, which isn't quite up to Division 1 standards". Sure I want continued success in the running game, but hey, let's see things for what they are: in need of substantial improvement. And I have no problem with any of the 4 quarterbacks being the starter, as long as they earn it in practice and in games. And is anyone seeing the possibility of an improved secondary providing more insight in the passing game during practices and scrimmages? Of course, one of the two picks Saturday was from Hilbert Jackson, but the other one, I understand, was from James Jones, a highly touted transfer. If so, this can be a good thing.- 22 replies

Don't run to the same spot even after a long gain, unless it's infrequently enough for noone to expect it. Or, get them to expect it, then play action pass. -
Butkus might not want to be all that close to Mean Joe. There's some history there.
