That was most excellent; mostly about the 2 high schools mentioned, but plenty about North Texas as well. It was so cool to see Abner Haynes saying, "that's when I fell in love with North Texas", when talking about all the students who went to Houston to support them when nobody down there would rent them a hotel and they had to sleep on the train.

I have been thinking about what it took for unpopular and antiestablishment groups such as German immigrants, Mormons, former Confederates, etc. to go from being only marginal in America, and barely loyal or even taking up arms against this United States to the point of being considered good groups from which to recruit military, police, CIA, and FBI personnel, and otherwise, just good old patriots. Wasn't the famous 36th Infantry (Texas) Division of World War 2 fame composed to a large extent of Texans from Italian and German heritage? At least for German Americans, their perceived loyalty and overall contributions were much different during WW1.

Well, some UNT grads have been hired into good positions by the music program, but most of the ones who really made a difference, Like Leon Breeden, came from the outside. At least they understand the importance of bringing in the best available talent. If it's talent you developed, fine; if there's better from the outside, bring it.

It's legitimate for the College of Music to hire from within; other UNT departments better have some overwhelmingly convincing candidate to do so. One thing about winning is that it is to some extent, a habit, one that has not been picked up by those who have been part of the athletic department staff at UNT. Plus, there are so many talented individuals out there. I know it seems tempting to find and promote someone who is known in the community, but if you look at some of the people who have really made a difference at North Texas, they were brought in from the outside as new talent, on the way up.

I commend UNTexas for starting the thread, and his simple heartfelt expression of sorrow. I experienced considerable anxiety after hearing this on the way to choir practice and church, coming home afterwards to call my family members to determine that my nephew living in Orlando, a gay man, was not among those killed or injured in the attack. This would have been almost too horrible to bear, what with his mother (my sister) having suffered a massive stroke about a month ago and being basically rendered immobile and without speech, to this point anyway. As far as the political arguments made, really... Still, as for the idea of the LGBT community getting in with Trump and the Republican Party over this, all I could think of was the old saying, "Politics makes for strange bedfellows". And basically, as an Army veteran, one reason I see for not going on a tirade against Muslims in general is that I want those in predominantly Muslim countries carrying the fight to these monstrous forces, not young American men and women. Sure, help them with air support, training, logistical support, communications, and most important, the kinds of weapons needed by those like the Kurdish fighters who have done much with little. But send 30,000 troops? To do what?

I've known some SMU people, and guess what? None of them have ever said anything about SMU football. In fact, some of them also have ties to UNT, and guess what? None of them have ever said anything about UNT football. Not that there couldn't be something there, but why let sentimentality (which may be the only reason most have followed either program in recent years), get in the way of business? But I do like a good conspiracy theory. My work requires me to know a lot about Dallas history (yeah, University Park is not Dallas, but is surrounded by it), and I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that ever happened in Dallas worth reporting that wasn't a conspiracy was the Kennedy assassination.

Well, if we had recruited, signed, and developed any quarterback, whether high school, jc, transfer, or any combination thereof during the time McCarney and Chico were here (I'm counting Derek Thompson as a holdover), maybe I would think more of a "JC curse". And honestly, I think Osborn could have done well, but am just convinced he pissed off McCarney somehow, and Mac had a "no exit" policy for the quarterback doghouse. For some reason, I think the current staff is at least willing to keep trying things, and doesn't seem to be willing to had over the starting qb position without someone earning it. Also, two other things: one, for positions like qb and dt, we may not get the first pick of the high school crop, and two, the JUCO route is just the way a lot of schools are going these days. At least this staff is finding JUCO talent all over the country. I've heard a lot of good about the JC programs in California.

Honestly, I don't see how anyone, Vito included, can have that much to say about 3 quarterbacks who have thrown a total of 1 pass in a collegiate game, and one who has really great stats and highlights from jc (see previous 3 jc transfers). Based on what has happened at other places, and the continuing adventures of Johnny Manziel, I'm willing to accept the possibility of any of the 4 guys who have been mentioned, with the strong caveat of keeping them away from alcohol and places it is served, until their eligibility is used up anyway. And I have watched at least two of those mentioned throw passes in practice, and they looked much more like what we have been told a pass should look like than I have seem in the last 2 years of either floaters or fastballs.

Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised to see both Means and Chumley being moved to other positions.

My take is that even if Shanbour and Fine turn out to be the players we hope (and have some reason to believe) they will be, this team was very thin at quarterback, especially since the stated offensive philosophy involves more passing than it has in recent memory. This commitment gives us someone who has seen the field at the college level within the last year. Since this staff hasn't talked about quarterbacks other than Morris, Shanbour, and Fine, I think they see O'Hara as the 4th quarterback that any program needs, and as someone with a serious chance of starting against SMU, especially since they probably want to redshirt Fine. And I don't see this as a give up on Shanbour, just a realistic move for a team that lost, and won't miss, all 3 starting quarterbacks after a one win season. At this point, I'm getting excited; at this time last year, we had two quarterbacks that most of us realized couldn't hack it at this level and couldn't throw the ball downfield, and one question mark. This year, we have four question marks, all of whom, by appearances can throw the ball downfield. I'll take those "unknowns", compared to our previous "knowns".

What did you expect him to say, something like, "we looked at some of the UNT offensive game film from last year and set it out for Monday morning trash pickup"? Not to say that they still use film, but hey, "good" would be 2 or 3 levels higher than what we have seen over the last 2 years.

It's kind of disgusting that folks on the Baylor Board are blaming their woes on "people hating Christians". One guy in Baylor athletics history acted against bearing false witness, and nobody seems to think it wrong that he was blackballed from coaching basketball. I don't really see in my post where I was wishing him a whole lot of good luck; rather I was just pointing out (from personal experience) that Seattle has good public transportation, and this could be another in a long line of reasons not to become involved in such problems as he did in Denton. Honestly though, and without knowing all the details, I would prefer that, as well as paying whatever price for his actions, or lack thereof, he turns his life around, whether he has a career in the NFL or not.

This guy gets it. It was interesting to see North Dakota Fans in Dallas having a good time before their team played for the FCS national championship in Frisco. We may see Idaho fans back in this area sometime in the future, but that's some highly competitive football where they'll be playing.
