  1. Thanks for keeping it short.
  2. I know for sure that Marcus King (from Euless Trinity) is gone; I think the other might be Evan Walker-I thought I saw somewhere he was leaving. It's unfortunate that King left for the reason he stated; wanting more playing time (left before the season started). He probably would have gotten that playing time here last year if he'd stayed. I don't believe Fentriss was part of that first recruiting class, but came here while still rehabbing from injury as a transfer.
  3. I can only assume you're serious. Care to tell us why?
  4. Well, in a way, we got the college careers of both McCoy and Sam Bradford started. Just not in the way we would like.
  5. I didn't know that much about him before you posted, and am glad you were here to inform us of our good fortune. Thank you for coaching him, and for standing up for him as you did.
  6. Sorry about that; fixed it.
  7. I thought this article was interesting, pointing out how coaches look for qualities like competitiveness; gave me some insight on why football coaches may want to see what a young man does in other sports. Also, I did not know that Colt McCoy was only a 3 star recruit, committing after Ryan Perrilloux, with 5 stars, had already committed to UT in the same class. Just more about the subjective nature of recruiting, I guess. Coaches looking for the intangible qualities
  8. I've heard one mother say she wanted her son at least 2 hours away (they lived in Arlington, he chose Midwestern State in Wichita Falls). I think that's far enough away that they don't bring their laundry home for Mom to do.
  9. I guess this Tyler Washington thread is as good as any of the (3?) threads about him to say this: He has made me completely quit caring about Chris what's his name going to Texas Tech! I say what's his name because I can't remember how to spell it well enough that I can get any internet hits on him. Now "Tyler Washington", plenty of hits, mostly about what he's done at track meets. So, what is it I like so much about him? Speed! How many people who are called defensive linemen have 4.5 speed and are offered track scholarships at UT Austin? I say we will start having sufficient depth at D-line by some point this season that when opposing offenses see a defensive line substitution, they groan, because they know that our second string isn't a step down, it's just part of a two-deep rotation that comes on the field refreshed and wanting some contact.
  10. I've been wondering for a while now, who really does have any great knowledge of economics? I have this weird theory that the greatest experts (yes, liberals, conservatives, libertarians, private sector, government, and academia based) were the ones who got us where we are now. I certainly don't think at this point that anyone working for a financial institution, or regulating one, should earn a salary any higher than someone holding the highest military rank in the U.S. I do agree with F.D.R. (in so many words), noone is worth a million dollars. For the guy who was C.E.O. of WAMU for about a week just before they were seized, partly sold to Chase, and partly went into the largest S&L failure in history, and the remaining part into bankruptcy, to make about a million dollars a day for that week he was on the job, was a real shame.
  11. Shelton Gandy, because a lot of people here, and rightly so, just want to give him his proper respect!
  12. Impressive! Seems to like contact.
  13. I think that someone who posted a few days ago that we would never get any more recruits from Cedar Hill is hoping that noone remembers.
  14. I thought Tomlinson had played some.
  15. True that, based on last year. Hopefully, a couple of guys in the 2008 or 2009 classes will make us forget about Fitzgerald and Stickler.
  16. I'm glad we hired someone with the credentials of Mike Nelson; it sounds like TD got good advice and followed it on this one. He seems like someone who will stay at one place for a while given the opportunity, and when he did (at Iowa State), showed results.
  17. I like what I read about this guy. Sounds like one of the most versatile athletes we've had lately, I mean, he CAN pass, if you look at his numbers. Height is good at QB, but maybe his "elusiveness" would help there. I'd like to see us try a "wildcat" formation with the direct snap to this guy; they'd have to respect the pass as well as the run. And kicks extra points? Actually we've needed that skill lately.
  18. If Riley is the starting QB and leads us to wins, his teammates will support him; same for Nathan. As for Tune leaving, some who have posted on this board that they were leaving it come back and are accepted, sometimes praised, by other board members. The story of the Prodigal Son is considered by some to be the most beautiful in the Bible. Oh, my prediction? 4-8; no particular reason, but Dodge said when he was hired that it would take 3 years to turn things around, and DD's last season had 3 wins, I believe. If Dodge is so loyal to his assistants, as many have said, he will start looking at what might work to win games, rather than what might work in his system.
  19. Man, you really got me laughing on that one! Glad I hadn't started eating my cheerios yet, or they would have been all over the room. In a way, I feel bad at laughing so hard over such a serious subject, but hey, it feels good!.
  20. Hmmm, it kinda makes you wonder. One theory that I heard last week is that the only difference between the North Texas and Texas football teams in that regard is that the horns players have more athletic ability to start with, so still aren't as "dehanced" performance wise as our guys are.
  21. Ok, since I voted positive, I'll tell you why. It doesn't really have anything to do with next year (although I want very badly to start winning more games and at least being competitive in the ones we don't win), or even Todd Dodge (or whether or not he stays or goes). It has to do with the spirit of the UNT community, and especially the young people, the students, who voted to impose a fee upon themselves and future students to create an appropriate venue in which to play D1 college football. Yes, I went to then NTSU during the Hayden Fry era, but didn't really follow football then. I was a poor student, fresh out of the Army, going to school on the GI Bill, and couldn't really afford to keep a car in repair enough to drive down to Texas Stadium where so many of our "home" games were played in those days. Of Course, I could have made a better effort and caught some of those, and even the occasional home game at Fouts, but it's hard for students to get into the game day experience as much when the games are being held off campus. Now basketball in those days, that was a heady (and on campus) experience! I hope that many of you had the pleasure of watching the men's basketball team in the Bill Blakeley era; I'm talking the home court advantage at the Super Pit in those days. Have that many of us thought what it will be like when we have the new football stadium, with the reestablishment of a winning tradition, at the same time that our basketball team has continued to progress, along with the crowd support it deserves? Man, I'm talking about a hot time in the old town on many a Saturday!
  22. I started a thread about that, but it went to second page purgatory. Maybe you could help bring back that discussion, because...I want to know something. Where's one of the guys with so called "insider information" when you need them? You can find it here: Link to DL coach thread
  23. I'll have to agree with you on the guaranteed loans, but not necessarily ONLY for expansion; I would also make startups eligible. I've come to this position due to reading what Mariano Martinez, the Dallas restaurateur, offered as advice to the President-Elect in a DMN feature just after the election. Mariano Martinez, restaurateur I started my first business with $500 and a Small Business Administration loan. I now own six restaurants that employ more than 600. But my plans for expansion are on hold. Encourage and stimulate growth of businesses like mine or, at the very least, don't hinder growth with more taxes and costly government intervention. I'd say that his opening sentence is a testament to government help for starting small businesses, and the second one just as powerfully endorses your idea for help financing business expansion. I really had no idea before reading this that the Mariano's restaurants (including the Hacienda Ranch in this area) had become that big, and I certainly never thought of them as having SBA help in getting started. I do like your idea, although being somewhat left of where I perceive you stand politically, for different reasons. I think businesses need help in getting the kind of financing they need, but that the nation's financial institutions have failed us as badly as the government entities charged with regulating them. Expecting the bankers and regulators to work together for the greater good of the nation is kind of like expecting those who got us in the ditch to get us out. I'm sure there are problems with guaranteeing loans, but it seems like it could be something that responds to the problem stated by the Fed and the Treasury Dept: unavailability of credit for businesses (and some individuals, such as student loan recipients). The TARP, which was supposedly designed to free up that credit, was just too much of a blank check to the Treasury Department, and is as confusing to most people as the confusing financial instruments that supposedly got us into that mess. I guess they were confusing; Alan Greenspan finally admitted that he didn't understand them, disabusing me of any notion that there was a smart guy in charge of the Fed. Follow the link below to the entire feature. DMN: Dallas business leaders advice to Obama
  24. To give credit where credit is due, it was SUMG who questioned our making this offer from the get go.
  25. I don't remember who on the board pointed this out when he "committed", but this was a real stretch, with both academic work to finish, and taking long enough to do it that he had been out of football for a year.
