I'm fairly certain that's what I was hearing.

Filmerj, I'm still crediting our win at Ball State to your "Baby Football Jesus" prayer.

If they reported punt blocks in the stats it might give us a clue about a couple of losses this year. Our kicking game only seems to regress.

Wouldn't have helped much with the pick six.

The only bright spot I can think of now is: 2 years till we hear their announcer.

Well crap; well at least I found something for my wife's birthday today.

I don't remember any wind, but we got some light showers here in Euless throughout most of the day. It was nice. -
Rick Villareal Should Not Be Allowed To Hire Our Next Hc

Two questions: 1.) You said the BOR should hire this consultant. Are you aware that none of the BOR live in Denton, and that it's offices are being moved to Dallas? 2.) If you don't think that RV should be involved in the process, why not just advocate his being replaced as AD, by whatever name you come up with? If it's only because of UNT being about to start construction of a new football stadium, don't you realize that we'll probably live with the results of that a lot longer than the next head football coach? And a couple of points: 1.) Most people on this board, many former UNT lettermen, and the DFW area media were all clamoring for the Dodge hire; why should the BOR listen to us now? 2.) It seems like RV made a demonstrably good decision on the Johnny Jones hire; would that have been more or less likely based on your consultant's advice? 3.) You've talked about the big names who we could have chosen from. Actually Dodge was a very big name at the time. Although he hasn't done as well at this level as so many of us had hoped, do you have any idea whether Jerry Glanville, one of those "big names" you mentioned, has done any better at FCS Portland State? Please, look that one up and report back to us? -
But if he's laughing and none of us hear it, how can we care?

Eagle, that's what's really sad; we're all convinced Playmaker writes this stuff in all seriousness. -
Navy was having a great year, I can't remember the record offhand, but they were generating a lot of buzz, especially having beaten Notre Dame for the first time in ages, and their coach, Paul Johnson, was on everybody's short list of coaching candidates. Army, is in the first year of the new coach they hired from FCS Cal Poly, and has won 3 games so far.

Well, aside from the standard consultant stereotypes; someone with a briefcase who spends the night in your office, someone from more than fifty miles away (or, according to my folks in Wichita Falls, someone from Dallas), I see a few potential problems with the general premise of the thread: 1. The Dallas Morning News reported today that the UNT System Board of Regents is moving its offices from Denton to Dallas. 2. Often there is a search committee for a head coaching hire; is this a new way of doing that? 3. Since the BOR will be in Dallas, and they would be in charge of hiring said consultant, (who might have nothing to do with UNT, such as Stallings), why would there be any concern about what anyone on the UNT Denton campus thought about the hire? 4. Are those currently in school being taught that hiring consultants to make major hires is a good idea? -
How does that work when you want to put pressure on someone? Threaten to charge them for coming to work?
-
I guess because it was almost the first thing he said; I don't recall him saying anything about "planning" or "preparation" before that. It just seemed odd to me, but it's just a personal opinion.

I'm from Wichita Falls and have noticed their return to football (I'm showing my age; they only had NAIA basketball when I was there) and the success Maskill has had there. The only thing I wonder about is that Elson coached a team that won the FCS championship, the next level higher than Maskill is coaching at Midwestern State, and Elson took the obvious beating in the transition. I think Maskill might be a good fit at WKU because he seems to have credibility and is a home boy. My only conclusions: 1.)there's no guarantees on who will succeed in moving up to the next level of college football competition, and 2). Maskill could probably instill a sense of confidence in the fan base at WKU. He seems like a solid individual, he's built Midwestern State up to a point that the people of Wichita Falls would never have believed, and he's helped some guys get started who made successful careers in the NFL. Also, D2 ball may be at a somewhat higher level talent wise than FCS, because the academic standards are lower (remember how Horton couldn't play for us, but could play at Tarleton State?). Still, I bet Maskill has a pretty sweet life there in Wichita Falls (hey, I never thought I would say that-couldn't get out of there fast enough myself), I doubt if he would leave there for any less than the deal Elson had; he'd probably want more.

Of course, you're right, although I think it would really take two wins for us to get excited about next season. I don't see why we don't at least stand a chance against FIU; they're without their brialliant receiver/return man Ty Hilton, the Army fans sound impatient for their coach to invent the forward pass, and the ASU fans sound ready for anyone but Roberts. So, has anyone come up with a theory as to why Arky State has done so poorly? Reading their board, it sounded like the only coach they were convinced they didn't want was Steve Kragthorpe, for leaving points on the board just before halftime against ASU when Louisville was on the ASU 2 and had 4 incomplete passes to end the half, then with an 11 point lead in the second half, starts passing and lets ASU back in it with Louisville throwing an INT. I guess that just makes the whole coach hiring business seem so odd; Kragthorpe seeming like such a genius at Tulsa, and is falling prey to the expectations game at Louisville. I think Dodge can come away with 2 more wins IF he can avoid what he mentioned in his postgame interview last Saturday, of "expecting to win". I think reasonable expectations would be for the coaches to come up with their best game plan and for the players to play hard and smart on every down.

I don't know that, but just guessing, less than by hiring from outside. I like the idea of letting an assistant finish out the season when a head coach leaves (such as Franccione (sp?) did at TCU, although Patterson only coached the bowl game. Turned out to be much better than TCU has ever done before. They had some horrible hires (a couple in a row) in recent times, but they struck gold with Patterson.

Right now, I'd take Al Golden, but the way he has Temple playing in his 3rd(?) year, I think he'll want more than $575k 2 years from now. If we're going to wait that long, maybe the guy at Stephen F. Austin will look like our man, they're at 7-2, in a 4 way tie in the Southland Conference. They nearly upset SMU to start the season. J.C. Harper, head coach at SFA

I'm not sure this is a good time to bring this up, since some will interpret it thusly.

Maybe one of those "Circle of Champions" groups will show up, putting down the $100k pledges. Oh, maybe money doesn't matter in the Sun Belt.

Ok, I'll admit to reading ponyfans, although it was easy to give that up once they started winning...which seemed to coincide with the ponyfans posters getting their wish, with Bo Levi Mitchell getting hurt and Kyle Padron taking over. Before that, they were saying the same things about June Jones and his "son", Mitchell, as some folks here say about Todd and Riley Dodge. That's when I gave up ponyfans, when they got their wish and they were still trash talking Mitchell, something about gloating over one of your guys getting hurt kinda hits me sideways.
