Just When You Thought Our College Football Irrelevance
eulessismore replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I thought they at least held them on some possessions. I guess I'm surprised that the coaches were still moving D-Linemen around position wise as of 2 weeks ago and seem to still be changing up the rotation from week to week. I think that if people like Cantly can go into the offseason knowing that they'll be playing tackle, and whoever will be playing end, that it will help. Nobody can convince me that it doesn't require some adjustment on a player's part to go from one of those positions to the other. Also, the goals for weight and other conditioning criteria are different. I would like to see Cantly stay at tackle, and be playing at 290-300 pounds. Like Green P1, I still have my doubts about the undersized DE's, but for some, Obi in particular, there seems to be promise. Again, an offseason with him in the conditioning program should help. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it's the defensive backfield that's shown the least progress as far as defense. -
Not according to this article in the San Francisco Chronicle when he was hired, in so many words, saying he was "was among the first names mentioned when Bowlsby began his search" (Walt Harris was fired on December 4, which was before he interviewed at North Texas, per the Forum thread), and that the Stanford AD Bowlsby, "kept a tight lid on his search". SFGate on Harbaugh hire Also, according to Coaching Hot Seat, his salary to start 2008 was $1 million (somewhere, you can figure he got $750k in his first year from all that info). Coaches Hot Seat on Harbaugh I'm just wondering, does anyone else get tired of hearing this story? I guess it was the first time I've seen a thread about it this week.

Well, that sounds familiar, and when I predicted a defense free football game with Western Kentucky, I was right for only 3 quarters, and enjoyed the result. Hard to believe that was just a little over 2 weeks ago. Now, I'm reminiscing about the more distant past, and predicting another offensive shootout with another service academy. I hope the result is differerent this time. You know something I remember from then that Navy (and before that MTSU) had that I thought was cool, was a rugby style (sprint out) punting play. I want us to try that. -

Damn, that's the year I was born! That's a long time to be a fan. What can we do to help, Jack? -
It would be a shame if we had no desire, because we do have things to play for: 1.) By most accounts, it's a winnable game. 2.) To win more games in this season than in either of the last two. 3.) To equal the win total for the last two years, making it possible to win more than the last two years combined. 4.) To make ourselves more attractive to recruits. 5.) To generate interest in our new stadium.

I've never really known how much most soldiers identify with West Point or Army football, but I was a mere draftee, serving here in the U.S.A. towards the end of the Vietnam war, so maybe it's different now. I've pointed out in another thread that it would be good for the Athletic Department to make as good as an event as they can out of the Army game, for the reasons you've mentioned. I think it would be hard for us to look at it this way at this point, but sports events can serve as a welcome distraction in times marred by national tragedy; thus the stated reason for the NFL to continue with its full schedule on the Sunday after the Kennedy assassination (not trying to draw too much of a parallel there, just pointing it out as an example of the "useful distraction". Also, if North Texas fans could put aside some of their (dare I say this) grieving over this season, I think we could better serve ourselves as fans and perhaps provide a good example to our team that we can be part of something bigger than ourselves at times, which can make us each, and as a group, a little bigger. I'm concerned that focusing too much on the negative aspects of the season up to this point (yes, there is still some important part of it to play) can have a negative impact of the performance of our team. It's good to have a sense of urgency, and to be focused on what needs to be done, but there is something about losing that can be self perpetuating; sort of that sense of "oh no, here we go again". I kind of wondered if there wasn't something of that in the possessions following the pick six, with the fumble and the blocked punt. And I'm not really any kind of gung-ho military minded individual, closer to being the opposite; just happened to have drafted into service at one point. I would like however, for any of the Army family who is in Denton for the first time, to leave with a sense of having been well received (except for what happens on the football field).

Apparently, the cheerleaders survived the budget axe, somewhere in here, it's pointed out that there's "no problem a bikini car wash won't solve". FIU cheerleaders survive -

I did notice that Seidle got credit for one catch (8 yards, I think). Was that his first of the season? -

Since that would leave us with one fewer coach than we have now, could Gandy have someone to help him with ST. I'd like for us to hire the guy Texas State has as linebackers/ST coach. That might even allow Deloach to go back to coaching safeties; a couple of the guys he coached at UCLA got drafted, one pretty high. -

Dang, Midwestern State was the first college I attended (in the late 60's) when they didn't have football. I was hoping MSU could pull it out today, but this is probably the best year they've had since bringing back football. But, beating ACU last week, they sure weren't going to sneak up on them this time. -

You are correct about that; something that was pointed out by our local and successful HS coach here in Euless, Steve Lineweaver. A player he had hoped would get a good scholarship offer was hurt in a game last year; when asked about the guy's scholarship chances, Lineweaver seemed down, mentioning that "colleges are not charities". The guy did get a scholarship, to a DII school, I believe. Hey, TFLF, speaking of DII, any word on the Midwestern State-ACU playoff game today in Wichita Falls? -

My hindsight is 50-50. Knowing what I know now, I think I still have even odds on making the same mistakes again. -

Plus, I think the DC and DL coaches have gotten some improvements out of the DL in some of our recent games. I think they're actually starting to figure that part out. The secondary is still a big concern. -
Well, my plans are to be there. Hey, it's been tough, and there's not much to say. I think there was better defensive line play tonight, and I see those guys as being among the hardest to recruit. As I've already mentioned, Tevinn Cantly seemed to have a good night, as well as some of the other D-linemen. I think they've finally figured out that Cantly belongs in the middle; we should have him for another 3 years.

Well, I'll give Gandy credit for improving some aspects of our special teams play such as the kickoff returns, but I'm still in favor of bringing in someone to help with the parts that haven't improved, especially blocking for the punter. -
I'll look forward and up to it. And by the way, I don't see tonight's game as a complete waste; the friend of the family (my manager's family), Tevinn Cantly, seems to have played a good game, was at least in on a sack.

Hey you interested in meeting up for the mens' BB game at UTA next week? That would at least give us something to look up to. That's a lame attempt at humor based on watching basketball played on a stage.
