  1. I think it goes further back. The Romanovs used a direct snap to one in their "Wild Cossack" formation.
  2. By the way, Lineweaver has been a big fan of Todd Dodge, and predicted to me that Dodge would bring winning ways to North Texas. It was Lineweaver's daughter, assistant to Laura Bush at the time, who arranged for Todd and Riley to meet George W. Bush.
  3. It does seem odd, but I noticed that from the two parents in my office who had sons looking for college football programs. Neither went to a D1 program (although one had verballed to Washington before Ty Willingham's firing ended that), but getting the college education (and that paid for) was the most important thing. There are really a lot more variables than the recent won-loss record that come into play. That said, I have noticed that young men who are recruited to play college football 1.) want to play, and 2.) want to be part of a winning team.
  4. What a great story of a great football player (if you watched the Green Bay-Lions game today you'll remember this one) giving back to the school that gave to him. I haven't decided yet whether or not I want Todd Dodge to go or stay, but let's remember; it's not about him, but about all of us, our school and it's future: Charles Woodson gives back to Michigan, in a big way
  5. North Texas players and coaches decide they have nothing to lose by playing to win: Us: 35 Them: 21
  6. Sounds better than "consultant" anyway. Another definition of consultant: somebody with a briefcase who spends the night in your office.
  7. We have all forgiven Lineweaver for that...after he won the state championship (for the second time in three years) the next year. By the way, I regard that failed fake punt attempt as the play that landed Todd Dodge at North Texas.
  8. Yes, I would support a new head coach (and would support Todd Dodge if he remains head coach), but actually the premise of the thread seems flawed. This forum (mostly) consists of North Texas fans. If people began following North Texas football because of Todd Dodge and only because of Dodge, they're not really North Texas fans. On the other hand, it won't be enough for us in the future to only keep "loyal" fans; we have to start bringing in the fans who will come because we win games. Even dedicated fans, or those students who are good prospects to become dedicated fans, become frustrated from lack of watching our team win.
  9. Hey, let's all be grateful for the players we've had this year and their parents. I haven't really seen our problems being from a lack of effort on their part. Rather, I've seen a bunch of guys giving it their best in sometimes heartbreaking circumstances.
  10. Hey, why not? So many teams have gone back to the single wing (or wildcat formation), there's no reason not to bring back any other formation from the past!
  11. A real story of heartbread then hope by a hs football player in Houston. This is from NPR's "The Story", and is an audio, so turn up your volume, scroll down to the bottom, and click on "Listen now!" to hear it; it's the first of two stories. My sound card is broken (I listened to it on the radio last night), so please let me know if it doesn't work. Warning! You may, as I have, become addicted to "The Story". Touchdown in Texas
  12. I have loved to hate them. It's a hatred that seems...pure.
  13. Well, Tom Schieffer, formerly with the MLB Texas Rangers management during the George W. Bush partial ownership era, just quit the gubernatorial race yesterday, and he may have plenty of spare time. He's been named in one of the all time famous (infamous?) sports transactions to come out of the Lone Star State: Washington Times: Dubya not really to blame in Sammy Sosa trade.
  14. It's easier defending a long field than a short one?
  15. I actually agree with TFLF, to try him at another position. I'd like to see him at corner; we've been lacking in coverage ability for awhile, hey keep trying people until we shut down somebody's passing game. Just thinking back to the Army game, they didn't have any receivers that could hang on to the ball, but man, their defense could make those catches.
  16. With the possible exception of Dunbar's TD run, It wasn't a thing of beauty. Still, and being there, I was sure wishing we could have won ugly. As Darrell Royal said, "Old ugly beats old nothing".
  17. AND he was having us beat my home town team, Euless Trinity...ridiculous. ET knows how to convert 3rd and short.
  18. Consultants, being what they are, will want to get paid anyway; let Playmaker take care of that.
  19. Build it, they will come.
  20. Would it be possible to have a "ratings" system for threads? Maybe with something like 1 to 10, with 10 being best, this could be 1, but only if that's the lowest possible rating. On a positive note, the original poster has reminded me that English language skills are useful for communicating ideas.
  21. I think you've already started a consultant loving thread. You have a man crush on some consultant somewhere. Most of the rest of the world just see consultants in the same light as corporate CEO's and politicians.
  22. My manager at work recorded it and told me he was going to watch it; I'll ask him what he saw. I remember it the way those Army players described it in the article I linked. Maybe those West Point guys don't really know what they did. Still, I'm not convinced it's trivial whether we're getting punts or FG's blocked; it's not good for the opponents to be running loose in our backfield when we're trying to punt or kick. If everyone thinks we're hunky dory with our kicking game other than one kicker, I guess we only have one more game of these nightmares, then Atterberry will be kicking them through from 55 yards out. And, if we can get the field goals kicked from far enough out, we won't have have to punt, thus no more blocked punts. Heck, maybe we'll figure out how to block one of them punts or field goal attempts, although the whole kicking aspect seems mighty mysterious to us.
  23. Touche. Still, the Army guy came through a wide open hole to block it.
  24. Dude, the fact is, on that blocked FG Saturday, they DID break through. This isn't really to defend Knott so much, because he did have a flat out missed PAT and a short kickoff just minutes before, but this Upstate NY beat writer describes what I saw: Army special teams play And I hate to point out the above, because in many ways, ST has improved under Gandy. Still, I don't care what FFR says, low trajectory wasn't the cause of that blocked FG, and certainly not the blocked punts in earlier games (hey, let's admit it, teams started doing that to us beginning with MTSU this year, and kept after us-don't you think they saw something watching film that made them thing they could?); at least one of those blocked punts I saw had the guy blocking it coming around left end. Yes, we need a better kicker, and yes, we need better protection for whoever is kicking or punting. And yeah, as much as I love Shelton Gandy, maybe we need some help coaching/mentoring kickers, whatever. Hell, I'll even concede one to that consultant loving UNT_Playmaker, bring in a kicking consultant if we can't afford to hire someone who knows how to coach kicking. Hell, tell Gandy/Dodge to swallow their pride and beg the previous S/C coach who was reported to coach kickers BACK to help out, have RV order the guy to help, if that's what it takes. Anything, but don't continue down this kicking game regression. If it's all on Knott, fine, but please, someone tell me how he screwed up the punting game.
