I see it as RV attempting a punt and getting it blocked.

If I had been the one establishing the criteria for Dodge to return, it would include: 1. He turns over playcalling to the coordinator(s). 2. No assumption of starting positions, including Riley. 3. The first open position to be filled is for someone who has a proven record of successfully coaching kicking units at the FBS level, and that person gets to recruit enough players to feel confident about our ability to do trick (for us), special teams plays, like punts, field goals, and PAT kicks.

What Will It Take To Turn 2-10 Into 10-2 ?
eulessismore replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, depending on whether or not you count both Scott Hall or Andrew Smith, you're one or two shy of something for each of the twelve days of Christmas. But we can't wait until December 25 to get started. -
No, a few others of us have mentioned this; I think we're starting to be heard. My manager at work looked at his recorded version of the Army game, said the Army guy who blocked the FG didn't come completely free, but free enough.
-
Uh, what about blocking for FG and PAT attempts? Or is there a consensus that Knott is the only one who should end up under the bus, like the Augie Dawgie (OG something or other) poster was saying? Not saying Knott doesn't bear some of the blame in this, but is he the ONLY one?

I thought that was the girl we wanted, but ended up with the tease.

Well, this really sucks. The only two conference coaches Dodge has beaten since he's been here are gone. Was that a home and home with Ball State?

Hey, I've just been noticing the lack of any sustainable attempt at logic or reason anywhere on the board for the last little while, and have just gotten to thinking, what we really have that's powerful at North Texas is music. Why not just have a board devoted to that. One's love for any genre, performer, or work of music has nothing to do with logic, it's just what you like. It would fit perfectly here. And please, mods, do move this; to the new "Music" forum.

Wow, your original post, asking us to use logic and avoid anger was interesting in how you used good grammar and appealed to reason. Now it's "Don't give me the Auburn crap", followed by giving us your take on the Auburn situation from last year, in a final, poorly constructed sentence. Yes, communication skills matter. I'll give you credit for starting out seeming to be thoughtful rather than angry. I didn't have my mind made up before you started this thread; now you've convinced me it's time to let Dodge go; it's generating too much anger.

I have never had any doubt in Dodge's ability to sell, and haven't had for the first two seasons, and was certainly well on board until about the end of the first quarter of this year's homecoming game, when MTSU went up on us something like 28-0. My understanding about selling, marketing, or whatever you want to call it, is that no matter how good a product is, you have to do a good job marketing it, or it could just be the next betamax vs. VHS, a technical success that flopped in the marketplace. My understanding of the other side of this is that if you don't have a good product, no amount of marketing will make any difference. It's hard for me to say, after following this football program for the last 3 years (and Dodge did bring me back out to watch the games, mostly based on his high school record, and all the hype accompanying his hire) that this is a good product, or that we're just about to turn a corner. If I were trying to talk someone other than my wife (who loves me and supports me in my passions, as I do in hers) into attending a North Texas football game, what could I say that was both honest and persuasive? Even my wife, who knows little about football, other than watching North Texas games, can understand interceptions, blocked punts, fumbles, blocked field goal attempts, and failure to get points when near the goal line, or failure to win games when we're ahead in the fourth quarter. Any suggestions as to how to package that up for marketing without making it a longer speech than most people who aren't sold on North Texas Football would be willing to hear? After all, just bringing out the hardcore fans isn't going to fill a new stadium for 5 or 6 home games every year.

In Fairness To Dodge About The Redshirt ...
eulessismore replied to rcade's topic in Mean Green Football
I can see your point, since he could be held out of play in any of the next 3 years and that would be his "redshirt" season. There's really no designation as "redshirt", until someone goes through a year without playing. I'm not necessarily criticizing the decision, since I think one part of a player's development is simply to get "noticed", playing well in an actual game, and Derek Thompson did get "noticed". However it's worded, I think the criticisms do make a good point, that a season of eligibility was used for such a short time, in the last game of what is basically a lost season. -
I LOVED the Halloween game! When I have some time I'll post some pics of the North Texas Dancers in their Halloween costumes.
-
Well, I'd love for someone to straighten out our kicking game.
-
That is all still mysterious to me, unless someone wants to serve as a volunteer coach while collecting their contract settlements. But hey, I'm from a poor family; we could never afford a father.
-
Well, that might explain some of the things he's been saying in the last week or so.
-
That he will be.....?
-
Well, we do have Texas on the schedule, for 2014(?). I guess that could give him a target.

Dear Mean Green Qb/wildcat Offense Debaters.....
eulessismore replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
For what it's worth, and it may not matter all that much, how how many here are aware that Derek Thompson was district MVP in baseball for Glen Rose one year. He has also played basketball and tennis for Glen Rose. -
For those in high school (dare I say that here?) boosters clubs, they hear from the coach after a game, although some of the talk is about the upcoming opponent. I guess it gives them more to talk about.

I read one article that described his hiring at Louisville as a "whirlwind courtship"; maybe this was the following quickie divorce. I think there are couple of complicating factors involving our situation right now; 1.)we'd like to sink all the money we can into the new stadium construction construction, and 2.) if the basketball team has the great season many of us are hoping, RV would probably have to be prepared to offer a contract extension with a lot more money to keep JJ.

Just responding to the part where you talked about "athletics", before you mentioned "specifically football", what about the hiring of Bill Blakeley? I used to love watching him coach North Texas basketball. Of course, the quote he had about being let go by Al Hurley, in so many words, "Hurley was ex-military, and I didn't salute", says a lot about Hurley's regime.

There's ways I can be ok with this. I think there has to be some delegation; it has seemed to me as if Dodge was micromanaging games. To me, I like the idea of the head coach deciding whether to go for it on 4th and short, but I'd prefer an offensive coordinator to decide what play to run. Plus, a situation like this might attract better candidates for assistant positions. Anyone remember Jerry Glanville leaving Portland State recently? Mouse Davis, who had resigned as his OC before the season started, said after Glanville's "resignation" that he had been promised a free hand running the offense when they left Hawaii and went to Portland State together, and that Glanville went back on that, started tinkering with the offense, and "completely changed it". Mind you, I'm not suggesting either of those guys ever be brought here, just using it as an example (and keep in mind that Davis brought the "run and shoot" to Hawaii, and had mentored quarterbacks like Neil Lomax at PSU).
