  1. Can anybody remember a game that we won because of an opposing player's injury or illness? I can't. Just win.
  2. We've been needing good timing from a secondary player for a while.
  3. +1. But that only gets you up to even in this strange world we live in.
  4. That judge won't let his work be affected by anything Bud Selig says.
  5. i view Western as being the only one of the SBC teams to REALLY disrespect us, which I think helped us win against them, starting with their first big penalty in the first game (no I wasn't there at the game, just read about it) moving them back for the PAT, which they missed. I feel they have brought forth rare displays of emotion from our guys.
  6. +1. But it was easy to believe...in Meager after that SMU game. Still, I can remember sitting behind the Mean Brigade then, listening to the band...debating over Meager vs. Vizza.
  7. Hey, once he mentions it in his opening paragraph, he seems to spend the rest of the article dismissing the chances for it. Honestly, it seemed odd that it would even be mentioned by a sportswriter, but it makes me think that if Middle can make so much recent progress, there's no great excuse why we can't. MTSU chances as BCS buster discussed. If nothing else, he makes what I think is a fair analysis of the Sun Belt reality (improving) vs. perception (not so much).
  8. I voted bowl. It would require at least 6 regular season wins, and probably 7, which would indicate strong play over an extended time period. Last year we played well for 1.5 games, then fell apart after Riley got hurt in the second half of the Ohio game. If we won against Clemson, it would be great, but only if we won at least another 5 games. Our big problem last year was playing a complete game. This year, we need to play a complete season, not start out impressive, then fade fast.
  9. Also, for those advocating Texas State as an opponent, they haven't exactly laid down for their D1 opponents, such as Baylor, whom they have played recently. Not that we should dismiss playing them or any other FCS school because they might win. Many FBS teams have found out the hard way that it's hard to guarantee a win by scheduling a perceived weaker opponent, of their level or FCS. Honestly, nobody should dismiss the possibility of us beating Clemson in their season (and home) opener. It's only the American spirit to root for the underdog, it's up to those scheduling to find worthy, but beatable opponents.
  10. That's what I was thinking to reply, before you did. It kinda reminds me of when I was at a barber shop in Bedford, where I lived at the time. Of course, American being the big employer in the area, even a threat of a strike against them by any of their unions is a big talking point, and the pilots were considering it then. The barber just launched into an anti pilots union speech that lasted throughout the haircut, with my responses being basically nonverbal and noncommittal. Not that I endorsed the Pilots, their union, or any proposed strike, but I didn't appreciate the barber's (apparent) assumption that I took his side on those issues, and did not tip him. Some occupations, (and, if they are done properly, they are professions), such as bartender, barber, etc., require conversational skills beyond delivering one sided debates on hot button issues. So, it's not a firable offense, but a supervisor who cared might give a "word to the wise".
  11. One of the things I recall as being cool watching North Texas in the 1980's was that the Green Brigade had an electric bass player, who was followed by someone pulling an amplifier on a cart (battery powered I'm sure). Wouldn't it be great to see both an electric bass and a lead guitar player in the marching band! Uh, but I think that's guitar "riffs". Hate to nitpick, but some things are important. Yes, you're ideas are great!
  12. In 9 cases out of 10, using logic is a waste of time.
  13. Well, I will be waiting until tomorrow to see what further information comes out of this, requested by one of the extremely few who care (it seems they can be counted on fewer fingers than required for a Microsoft three-fingered salute) about this. At this point, one has to dig down further in any Internet public announcement than most people are willing to scroll in order to find out that the orchestra has anything to do with UNT. To add insult to injury, the event schedule put out by the local Super Bowl committee has the game between SMU and TCU in Gerald Ford Stadium that same day at the top of its September calendar. It's hard to believe that as much time as is spent on this board on how others are defining us, so little is spent on the way we let ourselves be defined by those who purport to recognize, and employ the services of our "internationally acclaimed College of Music".
  14. Another +1. Advertising outlets do what their paying customers (advertisers) pay them to do, unless it's illegal or would cause a subscriber revolt. If you want to register displeasure with this, direct it to those who paid for the ad. To be marginalized in such a way, and not to speak out, would be the worst kind of negligence by UNT alums towards their alma mater.
  15. +1. Really, this is beyond outrage. Maybe Jerry Jones connection to the SMU "Circle of Champions" won't even let him at least acknowledge our fabulous College of Music. Honestly, unless we're getting the same kind of money as Tim McGraw, or publicity in kind, what's the point of our student ensembles even playing at such an event? It's not like the performers would be wearing a uniform to identify them with UNT. And almost certainly, the vast majority of the concert goers won't hear anywhere near the quality of sound that they would in almost any other venue. The one review I read of acoustics at Jerry World (yes, in the DMN) was nothing but a lengthy excuse based on either "what can you expect in this big a place", or "if you pay a lot of money for one of the better seats, you can hear the performance". Maybe we're not all that far from the days when, according to what an SMU alum told me, if the SMU orchestra was performing a piece that required more players than what were enrolled at SMU, they'd just hire some from North Texas, "because of the vast pool of talent there".
  16. That was more than a victory over a BCS team, it was a victory over a BCS team in a BCS bowl, to complete an unbeaten season, same as Utah over Alabama.
  17. Wasn't it looking at buildings for this proposed campus that caused Lee Jackson to get mad(der) at Gretchen Bataille? To me, it just sounded like, "Hey, could y'all send someone from UNT over to look at these buildings and see what you thing about them for classrooms"? Gretchen and staff, "Sure, why not"? Pegasus News re City of McKinney and Bataille "resignation"
  18. Exactly. Last year, after 7 games, SMU was at 3-4 beating powerhouses SFA and UAB (barely) for two of those. The only thing going for them at that point was that their their starting quarterback was hurt too badly to continue (I know that's brutal to say), and Jones was finally left with no choice but start a Southlake Carroll product, who probably should have been there already. I think we can reasonably expect to see substantial improvement in the win column with the guy, or guys, who will be quarterbacking for us next season. It's amazing how a good quarterback can make a coach look smart, and all the alums who were talking before about how far down their program was start sounding like smack talking homers.
  19. I find your points to be...salient. A few other things: 1. At one point, conferences were adding several teams at a time, and the creation of an "Eastern WAC" seemed more likely, because it actually happened once, and held together for a few years. The most recent "realignments" have been changes that have totaled no more than 2 added per conference. I wonder if Colorado would have jumped if they had realized they were the furthest from the Pacific of the "PAC 10 or 12". How would it be known that we would have other "Eastern WACers" coming along if we jumped first? 2. Maybe the loss of the eastern WAC schools follows a certain logic: A "Western" Athletic Conference probably has its best prospects further west. 3. If the guys in Utah know everything (don't tell the LDS family I married into that I said this), how come everybody thought the "PAC however many" knew everything and they turned out not to? Sure, they will be some cozying up of the elites, but some will drop out, some changes will take longer than we know, and the influence of the media outlets may make things sufficiently muddled that we will still have a chance to improve our conference affiliation by having a winning season or 3, opening a beautiful new stadium, and filling it (with people, not just credits for tickets sold like SMU has done) for every home game. What about some quality ooc wins?
  20. Key thing next year: winning season.
  21. Finally, some good news!
  22. 1. Derek Thompson. If not, I think Tune will be fine. 2. Tevinn Cantly. I'm kind of wondering if he was playing hurt last year. I'd consider him to break out if he's solid in the line rotation, because we already know what the projected starting tackles (both seniors) can do. They can't do it without having quality depth behind them though, and we need experienced defensive tackles for 2011.
