  1. +1, and if someone doesn't have the top job and isn't looking for the main chance, something is wrong.
  2. Only a North Texas alum would notice.
  3. Maybe they could replace Bower with him and put the Bower votes in one of the "miscellaneous" categories.
  4. I think he has enough history to be evaluated as his own man. I mean, should we eliminate everyone from serious contention because they come from a "coaching family"?
  5. Could you find out what Tommy Bowden's doing lately?
  6. Dang, they even covered this on NPR today on their "All Things Considered", usually geeky stuff for folks like me there, but when things are bad for the Cowboys, America notices. On the bright side, we're not the worst college/pro football team in the area right now.
  7. Hey, if we hired Stoops, maybe the Oklahoma coaching staff wouldn't make fun of our defensive schemes.

  10. I like the idea, now that it's been brought up, although I still have Chico as a "sentimental" favorite. However, could we get over the idea of hiring someone from the outside and assuming that one or any of the current staff could/would be retained. If we want Stoops here, we'll have to hire him as HC and let him name his assistants. If we want Canales, we'll have to hire him as HC and let him name his assistants. Wishing/hoping to have one of our current staff favorites retained by any outside hire is just Jerry's World stuff.
  11. +1 for reminding me; I shook his hand after the game. Did I tell anyone here that today? Hey, if he wants to coach, I say let him. Finally, someone who actually has a "splash" name.
  12. I'm fairly certain there's less to this story than meets the eye. You do realize that Franks was 7-45 at Duke, and that USF never planned for him to coach any practices or games, and that he was mostly known for academic compliance, right? In case you didn't look up his bio (I put a link in my previous post), he was pretty much there for keeping the kids going to class. But hey, Duke has been known as a place for academics, so maybe it just wasn't a place where anyone, even the legendary Carl Franks, could win much.
  13. Not really, because they had no more football to play before the next season, and probably just wanted to keep Coach Carl Franks around to make sure the players were still going to classes; based on what I've read about him, that's something he was good at while at Duke, and continued at South Florida. I'm fairly certain it wasn't due to his won-loss (if people wonder why we kept Dodge as long as we did...) record at Duke, the only place he was HC. Here's something with his record: Carl Franks bio from Wikipedia
  14. You make good points Tony. I'll have to say that Canales is my sentimental favorite at this point, but I have wondered this: Since I saw him coach what I considered a very good game last night, I'm wondering if my judgment isn't affected by how bad some of the previous coaching looks by comparison. In the big picture, I hope the decision makers give serious consideration to a larger number of coaches than I'm seeing talked about here. There's always the possibility that we'll make an offer to some who will refuse it (not saying either that it would be due to our "small time thinking", but some candidates have a job in mind before they interview in places where they're not serious about taking a position; maybe bidding up their services).
  15. Not to take away from Greg Gregory's accomplishments, but Canales was named OC at USF before the 2009 season (in January, 2009, I believe). Anyway, here's an article in their student newspaper about it: Canales and USF Spring Game 2009 article

  17. I would like for us to have a "victory song" as some schools do. I'm thinking it could be a student, or an alumni, "letsgiveacheer" from our board for an example.
  18. Quote ...Brandon McCoy played and ended up with seven tackles and a sack. Yep, I noticed him out there, and felt better when he was. Seems like when he plays, he gets a sack or someone around him does.
  19. Anybody out there, don't do it, just a trap question.
  20. Please, in the name of all that is holy, no. I don't know what is more shameful, Notre Dame not hiring any better after they fired him, or his compiling a similar record (in a similar time frame) as Todd Dodge, while possessing many of the same FBS credentials that would satisfy most of those here who have listed any such specific qualifications. As far as what he did at UW, honestly, after having lived in Washington (the State) for a couple of years around 1980, it is hard to believe how far that program has fallen. But, from the below, it sounds like he did his best to get his players' hair above their collars. The ups and downs of one Ty Willingham, per Wikipedia
  21. +1. And that's all I would suggest to anyone at this point, is to keep an open mind (and yes, I have my favorite, and yes will support whoever gets the nod). Another thing: although not a large crowd, one that stayed to the end and was excited throughout, and players who thought they could win until the opponent started into the "victory formation".
  22. Look, I can tell where you're going with this, and yes, there is a record of a high school director of bands coming to North Texas, and creating a world class program, but those were special circumstances; he had directed at the college, then professional level, then returned to Texas to a high school position because of illness in the family, and when the time was right, he was given his opportunity here, and boy did he ever make the most of it: Leon Breeden bio I doubt that will ever happen again, but who really knows?
  23. I'm coming to agree with someone who commented on the participation report last week in saying these may need to be corrected in order for medical hardships to be evaluated properly. Whoever is filing these needs to have someone examine these box score stats before they are posted. I hate to be critical, but, poor work on someone's part.
  24. The recruiting class that was put together for South Florida this last year was not due to anything Leavitt or Skip Holtz did, it was due to what the assistants who remained after Leavitt was fired and while many of them (including Canales) were aware (according to Holtz) that they would not remain on staff after doing what they did to save that class for USF. Utter professionalism on the part of those assistants, some damn good ones among them still without coaching jobs.
  25. +1, and yes, I felt like I had not been watching D1 college ball in our stadium for as long as, well you know. Tonight, for the first time since following UNT following this time around, I felt like our head coach was on a par with the best our conference has to offer. I even noticed Mean Joe was having a good time. I got to shake hands with that great man after the game, so tonight was worth it for me.
