  1. Here's something about him from one of his fans in Cincinnati, where he was also an assistant; seems he's coaching d-backs with Omaha of the UFL: Coach Tresey to UFL
  2. If you've ever attended college on a GI bill, you'll know that those checks don't always arrive on time. Reading through "the history of North Texas", or whatever they call it, after WWII, some players kept themselves going with the GI Bill and received scholarships after they earned them. I think it was Odus Mitchell who told one if he didn't earn a scholarship, he wouldn't stay on the team.
  3. I'm not really in favor of naming next year's starters at this point, although it's hard to see who could beat out Dunbar and Olen.
  4. Unless he was coaching defense, I don't see it as a big deal for Canales, except for one thing: wins and losses are the record that matters for head coaches, interim or not. Still, if George O'Leary could go 0-3 as interim at Georgia Tech, then go on to turn things around there, and take UCF to a very good record, I think he should still be in the running. I can only think of good things to say about O'leary for what he did on the field, by the way.
  5. So, we can we put you down as "maybe" for Mickey Matthews?
  6. Whoever the new coach is, he won't be troubled by pressure from the fans to retain any assistants, except Gandy.
  7. It seems like the offense was pressing. Outside of Jeremy Phillips, the defense didn't seem to do much of anything. I saw someone over in the chat badmouthing Riley. I think he did as well as anyone could have today. It was like the offense needed to score a touchdown every drive.
  8. I agree with you on this. At this point, I do feel that Canales is a better candidate than Matthews.
  9. Here's what I'm starting to think based on having done a few Internet searches about Leavitt, is that he may have a desirable attribute for a college football head coach, to delegate to his assistants. However, he doesn't seem known as someone who has the "salesmanship" (for lack of a better word) qualities that RV mentioned as one of the qualifications he was looking for when he came on the Barbershop Podcast at the start of this whole thing. Of course, I've also heard that as one of Coach Fran's downfalls at Alabama, was his lack of wanting to go out and schmooze with the kinds of folk that put the big money into Alabama Football. Canales does seem to have that; it would be interesting to hear more about Mickey Matthews; just the places he has coached and the success he has had makes him sound like someone I'd want to listen to. So, regardless of what happened with Leavitt at South Florida, or the status of his lawsuit against them, can he get past that to be successful as a head football coach and chief salesperson of the UNT Football Program? We must win, but winning in and of itself won't be enough if we want to step up to where we're consistently filling that stadium and causing realistic talk about adding on to it, not to mention getting into a conference where we have rivals within the state of Texas that we play every year.
  10. From what I've read (Wikipedia for Fran's record, JMU Athletics for Matthews'), Matthews was at TxSt in 88-89, Fran was there 90-91.
  11. I think one thing this story indicates is the desirability of our HFC position this time around. Mickey Matthews is a very good coach who has done a remarkable job of turning around the fortunes of JMU, a real turnaround for that school from where they were when he arrived. It seems like he's probably getting, with incentives, around $250k a year in what must be a pretty sweet situation at James Madison, if they just recently extended his contract in an attempt to keep him there. Also, their conference, the Colonial Athletic Association, is no slouch among those in the FCS, just ask some schools in the ACC who have lost to CAA schools in very recent years, as well as some traditional FCS powerhouses. And, regardless of what else has been said here, those previously reported as expressing interest in the North Texas job, Jim Leavitt and Mike Canales, have some very good credentials.
  12. This just goes to show that I should remember to put quotes around search terms, such as "Mickey Matthews" rather than just Mickey Matthews. Of course I was looking for information on the newly rumored North Texas hfc candidate. What I got on my hit list though, included a story from the Fox News Network about how Debbie Matthews, owner of a suburban Denver, Colorado strip club, "Shotgun Willie's", has sent 5 of her managers to the Disney Institute, a Disney Corporation "boot camp" for managers held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida to teach business principles of the Disney Corporation ("Think about it – they've been trained by Mickey Mouse," Matthews said."). Among the concepts taught: "maintain the fantasy". I love one of Ms Matthews quotes about teaching her dancers the art of seduction; "you don't have to be naked, just think naked". Here's the link: http://www.foxsmallb...s-mickey-mouse/
  13. Why harsh? In South Euless that's just what we call ourselves. He's also supposed to be a pretty smart guy. One quote I've seen attributed to him is "Don't be an idiot son, I can't coach idiots". So, maybe he recognizes his shortcomings.
  14. +1, and I just gave my fourth +1 for a volunteer in a row to you, Emmitt, so I hope not too many people post anything cool today (j/k).
  15. I've thought for a while that he would be a good choice for us, all kinds of Texas ties, married to a woman from Irving, but wonder if his signing a one year contract extension last year to keep him under contract to JMU through January, 2014 could be a problem. I'm sure there is some buyout clause in all these contracts, and I'm sure if we wanted him bad enough we'd figure out a way. Here's a link about the contract extension: Mickey Matthews contract extenson. He's solid, but I'm not sure he's the one to take us to the next level. I'm fairly certain he could at least get us back to where we were 8 or 10 years ago, but I don't think that's what most of the people here want.
  16. He always seemed unhappy here, especially the second year.
  17. UNT: 30 ULM: 10 Kind of dickeyesque; we win with strong defense, run game and special teams.
  18. Carol Canales will be at the next home basketball game handing out t-shirts, printed at the Canales' own expense that say "Lock the pit".
  19. One of the problems in trying to get a drunk to sober up is that you may stop him before he hits bottom.
  20. He's a faithful supporter of our athletic programs, and will be here a long time after you're gone. Have you ever even been a student, employee, or otherwise associated with the University of North Texas? Can't us North Texas guys just fight among ourselves without a bunch of outsiders? I'm serious.
  21. +1, although I'm putting myself down as a jackhole now! Can't make it to weeknight sports games since I work this damn job, but I'll regret missing this one for a long time.
  22. I'm guessing you realize the irony of what you posted, but I'm not sure. And I still support hiring Mike Canales as the next head coach, in spite of everything you're doing to discourage that.
  23. Answers to the above 3 questions: 1. North Texas fired coach Todd Dodge. 2. They disagree over who should be Dodge's permanent replacement. 3. One wants to hire the interim head coach as permanent; the other doesn't. You guess which. Also, and not entirely unrelated, the men's basketball team appears headed for a historically successful year, and if so, we may need to come up with a lot of money to keep him here next year.
  24. Brent Venables? I hope it's not true; not necessarily because of him (although I'm not thrilled by him). I don't see why we need to have it done by the K-State game. I think it was KingDL1 who said give it till the first week of December, if necessary, to give ourselves the chance of making the best choice. I don't know if there's anything magical about that, but I believe the regular season ends on Dec. 4, making it easier for currently employed coaches to travel for an interview, and also the high school teams are into playoffs by then, allowing for evaluation of prospects under more stressful conditions.
  25. Ah, to be 60 again.
