Pretty strong statement from McCarney on attendance
drex replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Here is my take on 'free ticket.' When we played SMU in '89 (I think it was), there was a sellout. Know why it was a sellout? Because I got with Albertson's and Pizza Hut and had them commit to ads in the Record-Chronicle and NT Daily for 10 days consistently up to game time publicizing the game. They already had ad buys in the paper anyway, and just added the game information to the ad. For their free advertising for the game, we gave them about 3,000 tickets to distribute free to the public. Every time someone walked into Pizza Hut or Albertson's they got a free ticket if they asked. The pizza delivery guys also gave free tickets with their deliveries. Now, were those 'free tickets?'....no, they were purchased by Albertson's and Pizza Hut for their advertising commitment. Anyway, it worked and everyone marveled how we sold out the game. If we had not done that promotion, we would have had a good crowd, but not a sellout crowd. Have you ever seen an empty seat buy a coke or a t-shirt? -
So Johnny snatches another one from right under our nose.

Three drops of rain with a forecast for rain guarantees a poor attendance...welcome to Mean Green football.

Not listed as a TV game on the North Texas football schedule.

Yep, instead of crying, do something about it. Hats off to Potts. If the public thinks the university thinks that a home game is a big deal the chances are better for ticket sales. I have sent the athletic department various suggestions, but never even heard back.

We don't play up Texas because we are secretly not really that proud of Texas...hell, we didn't even fly the Texas flag at games at Fouts Field for many years. Bear in mind, most of the worker bees at the athletic department are not even from Texas--neither is the president of the university. I've never understood while we did not play up Texas more when we were in the Sun Belt, since we were the only Texas university in the conference.

Roy Metzler has the liquor license for campus...talk to him about beer and the TABC rules if you want the particulars.

Tulane's Homecoming Curse is Broken! Tulane board thoughts

You can always count on North Texas to play Santa Claus to college football...just ask Tulane and Kansas State. -
Why do we always spot the opponents about 11 minutes of the first quarter? Also, I am sure the home crowd noise at the Superdome unnerved our players....4,000 people can sure make a lot of noise.

Since our fan base is fragile, how in the hell did we agree to a tv game on Halloween? National telecast with 7,000 will be counterproductive. I'd say 95 percent of college football would have trouble filling a stadium for Halloween....and North Texas, with its lack of promotional ideas will crash and burn for this one. Everybody pray that we put some consecutive wins together before October 31.

So, as I suspected, we (the tax payers) are subsidizing our own competition when we play Army, etc. in the future.

UNT women’s basketball team to be without three early in season
drex replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Basketball
So, the way I read it, the NCAA spots women's basketball scholarships for pregnancy. -
The rest of the schedule we basically play against the same talent level as us...no more semi-pro teams on the schedule. That being said, it comes down to momentum and tenacity--I like both elements that the Mean Green has.

Pride in your alma mater? What a concept.

What I did at College Inn was a sport.

Ricky, Ricky, why would the university care enough to do their job?

I suggested the following to the athletic department two years ago, but it fell upon deaf ears. Since we have the advantage of computer technology, why not have all the scanned tickets go into a randomly selected computer program to select winners for game prizes. Also, attendance would be rewarded by selecting winners who came to all the games--such as going with the team to a bowl game, student scholarship monies and even discounts on concession items. Those who bought season tickets, came to all the games and donated to the Mean Green Club would acrue points at the end of the season and based on their points they would be the winners of various prizes. Also, students who came to all the games would qualify for certain prizes. These would be awarded at the end of the season and prizes given to the winners. Concession discounts could be used for basketball or roll over to concessions at the next year's football season (option of the individual winners).

Vic Trilli could recruit, but had not a clue about game coaching.

So are there any remaining games that are considered unwinnable?

Interest that we now have a target on our back from the other conference schools...who would have thought so pre-season. -

This team is also entertaining to watch, which makes for lots of potential at the turnstiles. Chancellor was electric yesterday.- 38 replies

If old man Sammons was still alive I would feel a bit better. He built some good properties across the country. Having his underlings now handling the project bothers me a bit. I am also a bit concerned that we will see the day when there is a convention at the new center and NT is asked to move game dates or kickoff times to accomodate some convention booked on the same day. Traffic might be horrid, as well.

Most pro franchises are rolling in money.

I will defer to Christopher Walker and amend my statement to read 'are either ignorant of school traditions or are apathetic about school traditions.' The more I think about it 93% seems a little exaggarated...I'd go with 94%.

If you were the promotions director, you would have the cushiest job in America.

Seems we've had such bad luck in the past that a little good luck this year would sure be good.
