  1. Any more of a pipe dream than our stadium?
  2. Good for him, if it is true...I honestly cannot remember ever seeing him in anything green. His wardrobe is not a big deal, but it would be nice to see a green tie every once in awhile.
  3. Props to Coach Stephens for wearing green...now if Johnny would follow suit.
  4. Apparently they did not get the memo on the OSU campus that there was a game Monday night...lots of empty seats. Finally, OSU shows it is human....coming off a sub par 2007 campaign they will need time to get the interest back. In fact, if it had not been North Texas last night, I just wonder if the attendance would have been even worse...I imagine a lot of the crowd came to watch 'payback' from our win last season. I'm not making excuses for NT, but OSU showed it loses interest in mediocre basketball just like our fans do when we are mediocre. We always envy the 'mighty' Big XII, but they showed that they are human last night. By the way, if that little 'squat and shoot' guard of theirs had not caught fire with threes early it might have been a lot different game.
  5. Be nice to the old pit...it had its claws removed when they took out the side court bleachers.. Put those bleachers back, add 3200 people and you have a hell of a venue for 'homer basketball.' The old pit has hosted a lot more nationally ranked teams than the super pit...and we beat some of them, which is more than you can say for the super pit. The old girl just wasn't the same tonight. Sorry you newbies did not get the full 'treatment' from the old pit.
  6. Never compare us to the pro teams in the big xii.
  7. I think it holds about 3,200. Will it be packed? This is North Texas. Maybe by halftime.
  8. I tried to make this happen back in the late 80's. Tina said she had too much to lose by playing them and TWU said they did not want to play a game they had no chance of winning. I was trying to get a game each year in the old pit....oh well, maybe now.
  9. Donors are like heat seeking missles, they gravitate toward perceived excellence. UNT offers non of that ...we are merely a school treading water. No sizzle, no donations. We have no master plan for excellence and a pitiful handful of fund raisers. Other than that, there is no reason we should not succeed.
  10. My apologizies to Coach Dodge...now I feel about 2 inches tall.
  11. Since part of Dodge's salary is predicated on having a coaches show, and he was a no show for two shows, should part of his salary be withheld 'for personal reasons' by Villareal?
  12. Here are some recollections from the old pit days that might be of some help to you first timers. 1. The place will be hot ( assuming that not much has been done to the heating/cooling system). 2. Those of you on the first row will be able to 'talk to the opponents' quite easily. 3. One toilet each for men and women. 4. Concessions ( if they have them ) probably will be in one corner of the pit. 5. It will be noisy. Sound really carries. 6. You will hate your hard seats about 10 minutes into the game. 7. Lighting should be poor compared to the SuperPit. 8. Speaker system will be hard to hear. 9. Come to the old pit in a surly mood....it is not uncommon to stand and boo the opponents during their warmups. 10. When you leave, you will say 'man, that was fun, though primitive.'
  13. Also suggest you try the archives of the 'North Texan'...they have run stories in the past with pics.
  14. We need more of those 'escort services' in the future.
  15. Second Hand Rose is still going strong at a new location. It is located in the same shopping center as Good Eats north of Denton on I-35 ( just south of the truck stops and on the east side of the freeway).
  16. Thanks for hanging with us, Mathman. Perhaps both programs' best days are ahead. Just curious, what is your take on SMU upcoming basketball season? We think we will be pretty good, which should ease some of the sting from football.
  17. I think that Dickey sorta got the big head after some success and began to get a little lazy in recruiting. I think he put too much emphasis on his 'stealth' recruiting of marginal kids. Eventually it caught up with him, coupled with the rise of other SunBelt programs. The eventual outcome is where we are now.
  18. As I wrote on my last banner for the last game at the old pit...."Ain't a team come to Denton who can ever forget 'bout them three month nights in the nasty ole pit.'
  19. Nice post. Three corrections. One, we lost the Homecoming game to Florida State, secondly, we were not Division II, we were Division I, subset I-AA when we made the playoffs in Nevada and thirdly it was Walt Parker (Fred McCain's boss), not Fred McCain, who would not put up the money for a home playoff game.
  20. I had a 25 year old Swedish lass 'babysit' me in 1979...yes, it is fun.
  21. OK, I was there and here is my write up for Ty Sports (who wanted good news). Denton, Texas AP- Three thousand jam Alumni Center to greet Johnny Jones and Shanice Stephens North Texas basketball coaches Johnny Jones and Shanice Stephens spoke to alumni and friends of the university Thursday night at the UNT alumni center. Both coaches predicted over 20 wins and both seemed confident that their teams would make it to the Big Dance. Over three thousand fans cheered at the news, as they sipped mint juleps provided to them by the event sponsor, The Baptist Student Union. Athletic Director Rick Villareal introduced the two coaches and added that he had just gotten clearance from the board of regents to explore adding another 10,000 seats to the new football stadium. The Mayor of Denton and all members of the City Council were at the event and both coaches were presented a bonus check for $10,000 by the president of the Denton Chamber of Commerce. The event lasted about an hour and a half, but BSU officials indicated that some did not leave until all mint juleps were consumed. -30-
  22. I'm not very enthusiastic about juco players....the odds are long that the majority of them will contribute. However, you gotta do what you gotta do to keep your job.
  23. Husker fans will go anywhere, anytime, to any bowl game, to get out of Nebraska.
  24. No clue...in fact, I have not even got my season tickets yet and it is my belief that they still have not worked out seating for the game at the old pit.
  25. Tailgating goes back as far as the 1988 basketball season, when we went to the big dance. There was a lot of interest then, as we had a good team. Back then we called it 'freeze your tailgating'. Our recent mild winters should make it more and more popular ( especially on Saturday game day ) if we can have a winning season.
