  1. Some of the best times in NT football and basketball were directed by Barnum and Bailey proteges. Hayden Fry could work magic and so could coach Blakeley. Nothing wrong with being a promoter. In fact, it might be refreshing to have a coach who can work a room again. Canales is looking better and better to me, but what do I know, I only buy season tickets, give to the Mean Green Club and have donated in the past to the stadium fund.
  2. With all the expansions of teams to conferences that have no geographical or demographic relevance to the name of the various conferences, why not rename the conferences? I am thinking of calling them Greedy Conference I, Greedy Conference II, etc.? Just think of it, the television does a big promotional piece promoting the Rose Bowl and the announcer exclaims, "Stay tuned for the Rose Bowl, featuring the best of Greedy Conference I vs. Greedy Conference III for the national title." Just gives you goose bumps, n'est pas?
  3. This idea has been kicked around for years. I was told by one athletic director that the women's teams of UNT,TCU, SMU and UTA were going to do a tournament, but I have yet to see evidence of it. As usual, SMU will be the fly in the ointment for any men's tournament...need I say more?
  4. Canales proves he's the miracle man...NT by 10.
  5. Stranger things have happened...just ask Darrell Dickey, or ask Middle Tennessee.
  6. Don't worry, in order to assure that this thing does not happen again, Stephens has scheduled Denton High School next year for the opener. 94 feet of smoke and mirrors.
  7. Another campus appearance by Firefightin Rick, who was the Armadillo mascot in the movie.
  8. Jim, we all know and appreciate what Fry did here. This is 2010....let's look at our gray hair and transition into 2010 and a coaching search for the times. Fry had the advantage of being an independent in an NCAA that had not yet come up with 'working progress toward a degree, etc.' While we need many of Fry's qualities in the new coach, the new man will have struggles that Fry did not have. Of course, the new man will have a much better university than Fry did in the 70's and a new stadium to sell. It is so sad that the Camelot of North Texas football was 40 years ago...or was it Camelot?
  9. It's an easy formula, actually. You start with a huge pot of money and look the other way when the outlaws on the team get in trouble, and voila you have a football factory.
  10. It's the attempt to cover things up that bother me.
  11. Fascinating concept, but it takes two to tango. Will upper echelor programs cooperate by scheduling Sun Belt teams? Time will tell. One thing is for sure, the promotions people at the conference schools better start taking basketball more seriously.
  12. Believe me, coaches looking for a job are not bashful. If Leach is interested, I can assure you he has been on the phone with Villareal.
  13. Put an e on the end of his name and I'll consider it.
  14. My wife and I happened into Champs Sporting Goods in Garland at Firewheel Center and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Right in there with the UT, SMU, A&M, etc. sweatshirts were sweet NT sweatshirts. They are hooded and cost $59, which I thought was a bit high. However, if you buy two you get the second one for a total of $62. Not bad for two, plus the shirts are really nice...tackle twilled white North Texas plus the swooping Eagle. Check out a Champs in your area if you are interested.
  15. My condolences, Jalen. Welcome to the bermuda triangle of college basketball.
  16. All it takes is money...send yours in now.
  17. I wonder if the alumni assn. even knows about this. They should be apprised and send out an email to all their members referencing this even. I would let them know, but I am personna non grata with the alumni assn. right now.
  18. I think it's time for Todd Dodge, the dad, to tell Todd Dodge, the coach, to tell Riley Dodge that he is concerned for his health and not put him in harm's way the rest of the season. Good God, how many injuries do you want to put Riley through?
  19. I noticed that the Talons did not wave the green Texas battle flag at the Rice game. Will they do so at the LaLa game? Just curious. It would be a good tradition to keep going.
  20. Two things to discuss. One, the university's athletic department has been very vocal about branding the name North Texas, not UNT. So, UNT on helmets would be counterproductive. They want us to be referred to as North Texas, not UNT. Get fifteen miles outside of Denton and who the hell knows what UNT stands for? Secondly, I got a glimpse of the SMU helmet stickers...they looked like spider webs...what were they?
  21. Looks like they have a legitimate D1 crowd, too. In fact, it looks like even the SMU people showed up for this game.
  22. When Hutton talks, who listens?
  23. I, too, am proud that North Texas is not a football factory. That being said, I do expect our teams to be competitive. Maybe we should not hope for a conference championship each year, but we should never be in a position that we do not expect to win more than we lose. This is Texas ...this is football...your team's performance hangs around your neck whether you like it or not.
  24. I think that you can order online from Voertman's or the University Store, too. In my opinion there is a lot more selection of stuff from the University Store or Voertman's than the lame meangreengear.com.
  25. They had a master list of donors at the hospitality tent, so you could have just given them your name. Should you forget your card for the next game, I think you can still get in OK. The only problem I see is that they may have your giving level wrong on the master sheet that could impact how many guests you can get into the tent.
