  2. DISCLAIMER: This is not meant to be offensive to anyone in anyway. It is just for fun in an attempt to retaliate against a similar thread on the FIU board. Alright, but they started it... Tavares Kendrick and John Salley David Tabor and Jeff Foxworthy Lloyd Moss and Rudy Huxtable
  3. How we're favored in any game at this point is beyond me...nevertheless, FIU: 20 North Texas: 24
  4. My lame attempt at an updated version (remember, all in good fun): University of North Texas Denton is about the closest you can live to Oklahoma and still consider yourself a Texan. The student body is 54 percent female, and along with neighboring Texas Woman's University makes Denton a hot bed for future teachers, nurses, physical therapists, and softball coaches. Chances are I chose North Texas to stay close to the metroplex suburb in which I attended high school. I want to be far enough away from the parents that I can party my ass off, but I also want to be able to drive home and borrow money. Fry Street provides an eclectic mix of artsy hippie types, beer guzzling greeks, and hip hop club dwellers. We have had so many different names that half of our buildings are still marked incorrectly. ESPN doesn't know if we're the North Texas State Eagles or the University of North Texas Mean Green. Our football stadium is outclassed by many of the high school stadiums in Texas, and our team thinks we are big time because we win the Sun Belt every year...but at least we can tailgate! We are quick to throw out our famous alumni like Norah Jones, Don Henley, and Mean Joe Greene to others in order to prove that we are a big time university. We desperately seek the approval of Longhorn, Aggie, and Red Raider fans. We also hold about 25 different grudges against SMU. We have over 32,000 students and 100,000 area alums...sadly, about 20,000 people come to our football games. We are...North Texas.
  5. I wouldn't call the linebackers veterans just yet. Now next year, with a (hopefully) healthy Early back to go along with Monroe, Holman, Mendoza, Graves, and Nwigwe...then they SHOULD be the best LB group in the conference.
  6. Nope. But thinking back on that game, I remember how awesome our defense really was. For a couple of years there, the defense was more exciting than any offensive production I've seen since...including some of the Jamario/Patrick runs. We played respectable games against top 10 non-conference teams then too, I hope we're on our way back.
  7. Didn't do this myself, but witnessed it done to another poor sap: Condom filled with some toothpaste on the door knob.
  8. It seems kinda like a long shot at this point...but I'd take it for sure. I don't know if I'd trade another Sun Belt loss for a La. Tech win. That would pretty much kill our New Orleans Bowl hopes...and a 6-5 team with blowout losses to Tulsa and Kansas State probably won't get a whole lot of at large looks.
  9. Tailgaters bring time-honored tradition to NT parking lots Students, alumni converge near Fouts Field Tony Gutierrez Staff Writer October 05, 2005 Lawn chairs, beer cans, country music and smoke from various grills melded together between pickup trucks and other vehicles in Fouts Field’s parking lot Tuesday night before the nationally televised football game between Troy State University and the Mean Green. Students from multiple backgrounds came together to cheer on their team and partake in the tailgating. “It’s an American tradition,” said Mark Snow, Columbia, Mo., graduate student. “I’m from Missouri, but this is as close to home as it gets sometimes.” Several groups of friends work hard to make a tradition of tailgating. Fort Worth graduate student Ashley Cross and her friends sat in a white pick-up truck drinking cold beer, an event they’ve carried on for years. “I had class, and I just walked over here,” Cross said. “My friends were here, and we’ve been tailgating since we were freshmen. We’ve come to every home game for five years.” Many students jumped at the opportunity to tailgate as a reprieve after class. “I just got out of class, so it’s my hiatus,” Ben Taylor, Sachse senior, said. “We come to school, you go to class, but it also comes down to hanging out, coming to the games and supporting the school through the games. We show some unity, which is something the school really needs.” Taylor sat in the bed of a trailer while grilling hot dogs with his Sigma Chi brothers. “We just want to get a lot of people out to the games,” Andrew Johnson, Garland sophomore, said. “It’s kind of an awkward day to have a game, but we just want to support the school.” Alumni don’t miss the chance to root for their alma mater and returned to the parking lot to join in the festivities as well. “We’re here for the importance of the game on national television,” Jeff Oster, NT alumnus, said. “It’s important for the student population to get into the NT spirit and be a part of this thing.” Not all groups went inside the stadium to see the game. Members of Kappa Sigma voiced their contentment in listening to the game in the parking lot. “No, we don’t go into the game,” Jeremy Parrish, Keller junior, said. “It’s more fun out here. We can look at the highlights on SportsCenter. This is what it’s all about; hanging out with your friends.”
  10. Good picture. I've noticed in a few shots from this season that the jerseys don't match the pants. Oh well, that's the least of our problems right now.
  11. I'd like to see all the talk about the new facilities, NT commercials, announcer commentaries, crowd shots, etc. PM me if anyone got it. VCR got fried in the lightning storm, otherwise I'd tape the replay tonight at 2:00 a.m.
  12. DENTON, Texas (AP) -- Kenny Cattouse outrushed two NCAA rushing champions and helped Troy end North Texas' 26-game Sun Belt Conference winning streak. Cattouse rushed for 109 yards and Troy won 13-10 on Tuesday night to end the Mean Green's Sun Belt run that started in 2001. The sophomore running back had 30 yards more than rushing champions Jamario Thomas and Patrick Cobbs combined. The Trojans outgained North Texas 283 yards to 100 on the ground. "Coach came out with a good game plan. He decided to run the ball and just keep the ball on the ground," Cattouse said. "The offensive line did a great job. I had a good feeling coming into this game. I knew we were going to run it well." North Texas (1-3, 1-1) hadn't lost a conference game since a 19-17 defeat to Louisiana-Monroe in their first-ever Sun Belt game, on Oct. 6, 1991. They were trying to match the nation's longest active conference winning streak held by Boise State, which has won 27 straight Western Athletic Conference games. "I don't think anybody thought it would last forever," Mean Green coach Darrell Dickey said. "I know a lot of people are going to harp on the end of the streak. We're going to focus on the end of the season. ... We have a lot of improving to do to win games against anybody." North Texas had five turnovers, two of which led to points for Troy (2-3, 1-0). Johnny Quinn muffed a punt at the North Texas 17 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. Two plays later, Carl Meadows threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Toris Rutledge to put Troy ahead 7-0. "That was a huge win. We knew it wouldn't be easy," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. "We felt like we had to move the ball, and we knew we'd have to play defense and tackle those runners." The Trojans led 10-3 in the fourth quarter when Thomas, last year's NCAA Division I rushing champion, fumbled on third-and-1 just past midfield. Bernard Davis recovered to set up Greg Whibbs' second field goal, a 20-yarder with 8:27 left that made it 13-3. Freshman quarterback Daniel Meager ran for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:38 left to get the Mean Green within 13-10, but they couldn't recover an onside kick and Troy ran out the clock. Thomas was held to 23 yards on nine carries. Cobbs, who won the rushing title in 2003 before being hurt early last season and replaced by Thomas, had 56 yards on 15 carries. He had averaged 179 yards rushing in the seven previous Sun Belt games he started. "The defense gave us a chance to win the game, and our offense didn't come through," Cobbs said. "Our timing hasn't come together yet. We're not clicking at the same time." Whibbs also had a 24-yard field goal, but missed a 31-yarder and had a 43-yard try blocked by Aaron Wheaters on the final play of the first half. Nick Bazaldua missed a 51-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, but North Texas got the ball right back when Willie Ranson recovered a fumbled and returned it 24 yards to the Troy 17. But the Mean Green couldn't get a first down and had to settle for Bazaldua's 21-yard field goal.
  13. Replay is in effect for all 1-A conferences except the Sun Belt and the WAC.
  14. Looking at that box score makes me sick. Troy's first, second, AND third string RB's rushed for more yards each than Patrick or Jamario. We had 100 yards rushing...are you kidding me? What the hell happened. We passed for 129. Troy ran for 283 yards while only throwing for 40. Did they copy our old game plans and keys to success? I'm still not a fan of the boot leg, option, or WR screen on first down. An incomplete pass or loss on first down makes it REALLY hard to get the running game going.
  15. I agree about the personal fouls...it's almost like our reputation for getting them has caught up with us. The one they called on Covington in the second half was crap. He and the receiver ran into each other after the whistle. Branch, on the other hand, always seems to be around when those personal foul flags start flying.
  16. That's the highest "must see rating" I can remember seeing for one of our games...including the bowl games.
  17. Where on EARTH did that come from?
  18. This is on a full page in the middle of the NT Daily today. Great job, RV! "Students, On behalf of North Texas Athletics, I would personally like to thank the student body for your tremendous support of the Mean Green football team on September 17th. The amount of pride and spirit shown throughout the day was overwhelming. I was so proud of the University of North Texas family. But, we need your support now more than ever. Today, we will take on the Troy Trojans before a "national" audience on ESPN2 televised to over 82 million homes. This is the first time in North Texas football history that ESPN2 has broadcasted a nationally televised game from Denton, and we don't want it to be our last. Come to the game and show the country what MEAN GREEN spirit is all about! Paint your faces, make your signs and most of all wear green. With your help and support, we can make tonight a milestone in North Texas history. GO MEAN GREEN Rick Villarreal Director of Athletics University of North Texas P.S.- The first 3,000 students will receive a FREE North Texas t-shirt. Wear your green loud and proud so that people watching all over the country will know about the Mean Green!"
  19. I hope you're right too...isn't this about the time each year when we start feeling a little bit better about Mean Green football?!
  20. I'm there at 3:30 with about 12-15 others. About 8 of them are first timers...come on Mean Green, it is VITAL that we make a good showing tonight.
  21. No midfield logo as of right now...10:30 a.m. game day. I don't know why we couldn't make this happen. There are Peterbilt signs in the endzone seats. They're not big enough to cover all of the seats, but they take up a good chunk of them.
  22. Recent history has shown that week night games are usually have the lowest attendance of the entire season...is the ESPN2 national TV angle going to be enough to get a decent draw?
  23. Seriously, what happened to the Baylor gold? Did they get rid of it all together? I don't even see a gold outline on the BU logo.
  24. Also, Houston up 23-13 at the half over Tulsa. ULL losing to UCF 21-0. Come on Cajuns!
  25. Good for them. They made a decent showing against what is turning out to be a damn good Alabama team. Go Sun Belt.
