My oldest son collects these pocket helmets, the mini-version that you used to get from gumball machines. Apparently, you can get nine of the ten D1 schools in Texas, except for, yep, UNT. Have you guys ever seen these available in Denton / elsewhere? Here is a custom version I found on ebay, but I don't think we wanted to spend $25. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...p;rd=1&rd=1

Certainly the best finish of ANY GAME ANY SPORT I have seen. The first three quarters were not amazing though. The best bowl games that come to mind: ??? Bowl: East Carolina vs Marshall (greatest individual performance by Leftwich) Fiesta: BSU vs OU (certainly greatest finish) Fiesta: OSU vs Miami (game that had it all) Rose: Texas vs USC Cotton: Houston vs Notre Dame Insight: Tech / Minnesota, though you could see what was gonna happen somewhere around 38-14 and it was a matter of time

Bomar = not that good I don't think he is horrible, I just don't think he is a gamer and that he could run Dodge's offense. Chase Wasson may be alright, but did he even start at TSU this year? I know last year Barrick Nealy was the man in San Marcos. Snead would be the best pickup of all. Also that Arkansas WR that is leaving would be a real pick-up, but you would have to deal with mom and dad too.

Ticket price hike? For those who have already
Objective Aggie replied to kj86's topic in Mean Green Football
Hey now! To be fair, the A&M / Tech game was a great game (saw it on TV) even though A&M lost. Now the MTSU / UNT game was a miserable affair. While we had fun playing on the field AFTER the game, the actual 60 minutes of real game time offered little value. Ah well, I expect Dodge to fix that so maybe I should pay a little more. By the way, complete non sequitor, but the absolute two worst bathrooms in America are at Kyle Field and Fouts Fields. I have been to third world countries that had nicer facilities, and I am not joking. -
Ticket price hike? For those who have already
Objective Aggie replied to kj86's topic in Mean Green Football
Hmmmpf. The only reason I go is because it is so cheap. I sold my A&M / Tech tickets for $80 each (face value) and saw UNT play instead for $24 instead (me + two kids). -
Never believe what one coach says about another coach, unless Mike Leach is talking. The unwritten code is to be complimentary and upbeat. "You know, Coach Smith just needed a little more time. People focus on the 58 game-losing streak, but he did some great things with that program. It is a travesty they let him go so quickly, but I know he will land on his feet quickly. Blah blah."

Sneed never played for Briles and ran a different offense at Stephenville.

I give all the credit those years to Kragthorpe, not Dodge. (Of course I have no idea if Kragthorpe was here during those years and if did anything better than Dodge).

Nice hire. As someone who goes to one North Texas game a year, I may actually get to see some offense! Some risks obviously with a high school direct to D1 move, but there is tremendous upside. Of course, he goes from the most sheltered / catered environment (NFL heritage talent, facilities, funding, asisstant coached, winning tradition, fan support) to a place that needs a little bit of work, but I really think he has the energy to make it happen. Nice hire RV!

Just to way in with completely useless information: Sometimes hiring coaches works in funny ways. At A&M, when Fran went shopping for a defensive coordinator, he searched high and low and oila, ended up with his old coaching buddy Gary Darnell who kinda fizzled at Texas and as a head coach. The fans were enraged. How dare he! Well, Darnell did as good as ANY coach could have done given teh shambles we were in 12 months ago (ranked 107 for goodness sakes). Meanwhile, many doubted that Billy Gillespie was the right man. Lacked substantial experience the pundits said. Too young and unproven. But when we hhired our baseball coach, we passed or were passed on by several big names (head coaches from South Carolina, GT, and Fullerton) to get the pitching coach from Neb. He had a horrendous year last year, but I suppose time will tell. Botton line: whether nepotism, cronyism, or just taking a big name, you never know when someone will work and when someone will flame out. Just give the guy a chance.

Glad to see so many Aggie fans around here! This Aggie always pulls for UNT. Well almost always, I had a bit of a struggle since my dad went to La Tech for one game this year. Good luck with getting the RIGHT coach. I personally think Gary Barnett is the most interesting.

Hey Fake Lonnie Finch, where does your name come from? I knew a Lonnie Finch that played at OU.
-
Hey, I loved Major. He originally committed to A&M and only switched when we fired our OC. I loved the way he played. But he is just not ready to run a D1 program. Maybe a D2 or something. But hey, I am just an Aggie. Perhaps you should go hire Vince Young? Perhaps Ricky Williams should be your OC. I get mad when people (Aggies) thought Dat Nguyen should be our DC, despit ethe fact he had NEVER coached.

There is a lot to being a head coach. Hiring someone with minimal COACHING experience and ZERO HC exp is very risky. There are a slew of assistants who flame out as a HC because there are so many things to take care of - - prep, practice, discipline, recruiting, fundraising, alumni, media, etc. As mcuh as I dislike Rick Neuheisal/Gary Barnett, they would be light years ahead of The Major.

How come no one mentioned Chizik?

GreyEagle: Dan McCartney was the ISU coach, just released yesterday (Black Wednesday). -
Who does UNT aspire to be?
Objective Aggie replied to Objective Aggie's topic in Mean Green Football
I would believe Miami before any of those. LSU Texas OU etc are all the recipients of massive funding and fan support. Unfortunately, UNT is not even 1/10th of that. Miami on the other hand, was a non-existent player, and then emerged almost out of nowhere in 1981 (or was that 82 when they beat Nebraska?). Somehow / someway, they forced themsleves on teh scene without a large alumni / fan support and created a dynasty. I guess 1980 SMU would be the closest thing, minus South Beach. -
Tulsa? Marshall from a few years back? SMU? TCU? La Tech? So Miss? Toledo? Georgia Tech? Boise State? Just curious

How come no one mentioned Chizik?

Don't scoff at Slocum. I met him many times and he is a great individual. He was a players coach and resonated well with the high school ranks. He was a very good recruiter. +'s + knows defense + knows Texas + knows HSs in Texas + ethical + proven record + good spokeman for the university + some name reognition, but not a WOW. Still, he woudl get coverage from all the state papers on UNT inthe first season -s - been out too long - had difficulty sustaining an offense or an OC, which may not be a good formula in Denton - declined as a coach his last years at A&M The first negative will be his biggest obstacle, and I think that will be his undoing. -
Here would be my picks for the next coach (in no real order): 1. Chizik, Texas (and Auburn) DC 2. Dan McCartney, a retread, but he had his moments. 3. Todd Dodge 4. Rick Neuheusil 5. R.C. Slocum

Leach Tells His Critcs to Get Over It
Objective Aggie replied to LongJim's topic in Mean Green Football
Leach has no coaching tact, but is hilarious. He cracks me up everytime. He is the aloof professor who always has an entertaining class. His biggest issue is he forgets to have his team ready EVERY week. Morriss has too much of that us against the world moxie. He encourages it way too much among his players and fans. Look at CJ Wilson their "star" cornerback who thought they would contend for the national title and guaranteed a victory over Texas. Morriss has more trouble closing games than anyone I know. He is light years beyond Steele, but vastly over-rated. -
If McCarney isout at Iowa State....
Objective Aggie replied to Varsity's topic in Mean Green Football
McCartney is a good coach, just outmatched in the Big 12. While beating Texas Nebraska and OU regularly may have been beyond his reach, he could do well at UNT. I would think he would be a great choice. -

LongJim, please stop linking article to The Onion. Oh wait, that is not The Onion. . . . unbelievable. So he wears his hair like Jordan, lives in Nike's hometown, and wears Air Jordan shoes. Uhhh, yeah. -

Boko - So, TSU is about to pass A&M then in terms of admission standards, is that what you are implying? By the way, my sister-in-law is a huge TSU fan (one of the few that has been loyal the last few years) so I may hit a game this year. My boys actually have TSU jerseys.
