Our football team has a tough time throwing the ball down field, so teams pack the box in order to stop the run.
We are going to see the same thing with our basketball squad this year. Until we can prove that we can hit an outside shot, teams are going to double down inside and collapse on the interior forcing us to take bad shots from the interior.
I really believed that Walton was the key to this team, because he represented our only proven outside threat. This problem is the reason Benford pushed so hard to get TJ Taylor in here, but we now see that we are going to have neither Taylor or Walton.
Just as we saw with Creighton, our opponents could care less if T-Mitch is shooting from 3. He is more dangerous around the basket. They only way we are going to be able to counteract this strategy is to score lots of points in transition, get to the free throw line, or find a way to make our opponents spread the defense to guard the three point line.
What is worrisome, as pointed out a few times by Cooley, is we don't have any pure shooters in our next class, either.
