  2. From the DMN: However, Wasson needs to be approved by school board Monday 02:04 AM CST on Saturday, January 27, 2007 By TODD WILLS and BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News Hal Wasson will be recommended as Southlake Carroll's next football coach at Monday's school board meeting, two sources close to the program said Friday. Wasson's hiring is pending approval by the Carroll ISD school board, which is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. Monday in the auditorium at Johnson Elementary School in Southlake. Wasson, the coach at Keller Fossil Ridge, was among four coaches interviewed Wednesday to replace Todd Dodge, who left in mid-December to become the head coach at North Texas. The three other coaches interviewed by a six-person advisory committee – Plano East's Johnny Ringo, Frisco's Vance Gibson and Andrews' Blaine Springston – said they were notified Friday by Carroll officials that they would not be offered the job. Wasson, 50, has long been considered a frontrunner for the job because of his connections to the football program. He was the running backs coach at Carroll in 2001 and 2002. Wasson's son, Chase (now at Texas State), was a record-setting quarterback at Carroll and led it to the 2002 5A Division II state title. Wasson's wife, Sallie, is a teacher in the Carroll ISD. Wasson is 122-83-2 in 19 seasons as a head coach, 28-15 in four seasons at Fossil Ridge. His teams have reached the playoffs 11 times. Wasson led Fossil Ridge to a 10-2 record and the District 6-4A title in 2006 and was named district coach of the year. Wasson replaces Dodge, who was 98-11 in seven seasons at Carroll. Dodge led Carroll to a 79-1 record and four 5A state titles in his last five seasons. Wasson takes over a Carroll team that returns seven offensive and two defensive starters from last year's Class 5A Division I state champion. Wasson runs a spread offense similar to Carroll's. Carroll's offense should again be potent with the return of quarterback Riley Dodge (4,184 passing yards, 54 TDs; 1,119 rushing yards, 13 TDs), Todd Dodge's son and The Associated Press' 2006 5A state offensive player of the year, running back Tre' Newton (2,010 rushing yards, 20 TDs) and wide receiver Blake Cantu (80 catches, 1,283 yards, 14 TDs). Wasson becomes the ninth football head coach in Carroll's 44-season UIL varsity history that has produced an all-time record of 398-126-8. Carroll has been particularly impressive in the last 20 seasons, winning seven state titles in eight championship game appearances. Carroll's record the last 20 seasons is 244-39-1, including a state-record 72-game regular-season winning streak from 1986 to 1993. Wasson will attempt to keep Carroll's current eye-popping streaks in tact. Carroll has played in five consecutive 5A state-title games, won 48 consecutive games and has a 50-game regular-season winning streak. Terms of Wasson's one-year probationary contract are expected to be released Monday. A news conference will follow the Monday board meeting to introduce Wasson to the public. twills@dallasnews.com and bgeorge@dallanews.com HAL WASSON Age: 50 Family: Wife, Sallie; son, Chase (22) and daughter, Chelsie (19). From 1986 to 2000, Wasson was the head coach at Class 3A/2A schools Italy, San Saba, Pittsburg, Kerens, Mexia and Liberty Hill. ... Wasson's younger brother, Tim, is the defensive coordinator at Lewisville. ... Wasson is a Kerens High School (located 15 miles east of Corsicana) graduate and attended three colleges: Navarro, Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin. ... Wasson graduated from Abilene Christian in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree and attended graduate school at SFA from 1983 to 1984. ... Wasson's résumé states that he was a member of Abilene Christian's 1977 NAIA Division I national championship team. Wasson was an all-conference punter on the 1978 team and averaged 38 yards per punt during the 1978 and '79 seasons... This is the second consecutive time Carroll has hired a Fossil Ridge coach. Todd Dodge coached at Fossil Ridge in 1998 and 1999 before Carroll hired him in 2000.
  3. From DallasBlog.com Southlake Carroll set to name Wasson/Prediction: SLC will continue roll at least for 3 years Southlake Carroll are set to announce former assistant Hal Wasson to replace Todd Dodge at a school board/news conference at 5 p.m. Monday. Wasson has been considered a front runner since Dodge left for North Texas following SCL winning its fourth Class 5A state title in five years. Wasson and Denton Ryan coach Joey Florence were the leading candidates and Florence opted not to apply. Multiple newspapers and websites were making reports Friday. Wasson, 50, was an SLC assistant in '01 and '02 when his sone Chase was the Dragons' quarterback. He left to become head coach at Keller Fossil Ridge in '03. Southlake Carroll is set do deep down into middle schools, that all feed into one high school, that the program will be a success for three or four years if they would have hired any of the finalists and a couple of dozen other coaches _ or as Jerry Jones would say "500 coaches can coach this team." The program's infrastructure of athlete and coach work-ethic, ingrained knowledge of system, parents moving their athletic kids into district and community support will likely get at least one more state title in the next three years if not more. The test of this hire will be in four years to see if Southlake still is a similar power. The finalists: Wasson (50): 122-83-2 in 19 years as a head coach and has led 11 teams to the playoffs. Fossil Ridge went 10-2 in 2006 and won the District 6-4A title. Johnny Ringo (46): Led Plano East to the Class 5A Region II semifinals in 2006 and 10-3 record. Overall in 10 seasons he has posted a record of 68-41-2. Vance Gibson (53). Led Frisco to the playoffs in 2006 for first playoff in six years. In 13 seasons at Howard Payne University, Gibson post a record of 89-41-1 with three conference titles. Blaine Springston (52): Taken Andrews to the playoffs four of the past five years. Coached at Boswell from '87-93.

  7. Was Baker with the Rams when they won the Super Bowl?
  8. Emmitt & Chris, Nothing makes me happier than when NT wins (No matter the sport). I hope I'm wrong and the Men And Women win out the season and qualify for the Tournament. Go Mean Green. Go Johnny Jones, Go Tina Slinker.
  9. Here is a list of the best Texas high school (one-man's opinion). Got me wondering are there enough NFL alums from NT that have played on a Super Bowl team? _________________________________________________________________________________________ Here is one opinion which Texas high school players have made a mark in past Super Bowls. 10. A 13-point win is not a blow out, 66 - 53, neither is a 17-point, 76 - 59. A blowout is an easy victory, according to WordNet. I know for sure that the MUTS game wasn't an easy victory. Leading by 4 against FAU at the half isn't easy.
  11. He was here less than a month and had minimal contact with the current players. I'm not sure if he brought in any of these recruits or not. If it ends up costing us a recruit, then it will be a gad loss, but I believe the recruits want to play for Coach Dodge.
  12. And if he had a better attitude then he'd be a Big 10 caliber recruit.
  13. Speaking of Podcast. Matt, Harry, Evan when is the next one. Before or after signing day?
  14. People are saying move Meager to WR because of his injury problem. Move Woody to another position, DB, RB or WR because of his speed. Tune was recruited as a Defensive Back and that might be the best position for him. Phillips is a drop back passer, that's it.
  15. We, as alums, have got to make people as Passionate about the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS as we are. We can't wait around for somebody else, like the economic campaign people, to do it. We need to talk to our UNT and non-UNT friends and talk about the positive things going on at North Texas. Take them to games, even if you have to buy the ticket. Bring them to tailgating, Emmitt would love to have you at his basketball tailgating. Even better start your own tailgating and invite everyone you know. Tell them you'll be supplying the tailgating, they're responsible for their own ticket. Win lor lose, talk about how well the team played. Invite them to as many events as you can. Turn them into a fan.
  16. Riley can play Wide Receiver, which is probably what he will be recruited as at the "BCS" schools.
  17. You are not a slave. You are a person who can make a difference. Donate at some level, not because you know what it's going to. Do it because you know it will help the NT athletic department get where it wants to be. Who knows your donation could be the one to make the stadium or the baseball program a reality.
  18. It happens one person at a time. Step up, Man Up, Put Up or SHUT UP!
  19. Daddy Dumpsalot, you are the reason North Texas will always be trying to be a major player in athletics. You donate money because you love your alma mater. Not because the money is earmarked for a certain project. So join the MEAN GREEN Club, at any level. Buy season tickets to every sport. Attend as many games as you can of every sport. Not because you have to or want to. Do it because you LOVE and are proud of the school.
  20. Mascot fiasco caps Toros' win Da Bull gets technical for hanging on rim. By William Wilkerson AMERICAN-STATESMAN CORRESPONDENT Thursday, January 25, 2007 James White tried to hide his smile behind his jersey, but it didn't do much good. P.J. Tucker's Colorado 14ers were down four points with 0.4 seconds left in the game, but Tucker and several of his teammates were cracking up. In an elevator afterward, players from both the 14ers and the Austin Toros were still trying to fathom what had just happened. Did Austin's mascot, Da Bull, just receive a technical foul for hanging on the rim at the end of regulation play? Does a bull see red? Loren Woods had just dunked a ball with less than five seconds to go to give Austin a 101-97 lead. When Colorado reached the other end of the court, Da Bull was waiting for them, on the rim. Time expired, but the referees gathered and decided to assess the mascot a technical. Colorado made the resulting free throw, and the refs put 0.4 seconds back on the clock. Luckily for Da Bull, the 14ers missed their desperation three-point attempt, and Austin survived to win 101-98 Wednesday afternoon at the Convention Center. "Who's going to pay that bull's fine?" Toros coach Dennis Johnson joked before the technical free throw. Things grew more embarrassing for Da Bull when he lost his mascot head as he dropped to the court in a scramble to avoid the oncoming Colorado players. "Now everyone knows who the mascot is," Johnson said with a laugh. Less amused, Toros officials announced a few hours after the game that Da Bull — whom team officials declined to identify — was suspended for two games and assigned to perform 50 hours of community service. "I've never seen that in all my years of basketball, and I hope I never do again," said Johnson, who played in the NBA for 14 seasons from 1976-90. On the court, the D-League game was back and forth in the final quarter. With the score tied at 96 and 1 minute to play, Eric Osmundson had an opportunity to give Colorado (15-8) the lead, but he missed a point-blank layup. From there, Woods made three free throws and blocked a shot to semi-secure Austin's victory. The 7-foot-2-inch Woods had 12 points and 14 rebounds. B.J. Elder led the Toros with 20 points while White added 17. Cheyne Gadson scored eight points and had six assists in his debut with the Toros (8-16), who won their third straight. Tucker, a 6-7 forward, finished with four points and three rebounds. The former Texas Longhorn was a second-round NBA draft pick of Toronto in the spring. The Raptors assigned him to Colorado, one of their NBA Development League affiliates, about three weeks ago. On Wednesday, he witnessed a strange, head-shaking sight as a young pro. As did Johnson, the old pro. "The guys played well and worked hard for that win," Johnson said of his team. "I'm glad that (incident with Da Bull) wasn't the deciding factor in the outcome of the game."
  21. Haltom finds coach/North Texas gets QB commit Haltom will recommend Kingsville coach Scot Hafley, a former North Crowley assistant, to become its head football coach at Thursday night's Birdville ISD board meeting. Hafley led Kingsville to its first playoff spot in the last six years by winning its last three games. Kingsville was 3-7 on the season. North Garland WR Hubert Anyiam has committed to Oklahoma State. Anyiam, a 6-1 hoops star who blossomed at receiver for the Raiders this year, was hotly recruited by Louisville and Arkansas. North Garland athlete Adam Linwood has commited to Louisiana Tech ... FW Star-Telegram reports North Texas picked up the commitment of San Antonio Heights QB Giovanni Vizza (6-1, 195). A previous Nevada commit who was highly accurate passer at NIKE camp in at A&M last April and led Heights to improbable Class 4A state title. Euless Trnity OL/DT Jordan Scroggins and, as expected, Austin Westlake DB Bron Hager, son of former UT and NFL linebacker Britt. Hager was waiting on an offer from Baylor but opted for North Texas when the Bears went elsewhere.
  22. 77 Thomas Tatum 6-4 255 Senior DL
  23. Lets hope the record is better than the Armadillos.
  24. This is a commercial for the season highlight DVD, but it's got some footage of Vizza (15) at the end. We is the Key Decent producton value for a HS video.
