  5. Final chapter For Southlake Carroll quarterback Riley Dodge, today marked the end to his time with the Dragons. "It's sad. At the same time, it's time,'' said Elizabeth Dodge, Riley's mother. Dragon fans can probably remember when Riley was a ballboy and coming up through junior high. Riley and running back Tre' Newton had plenty of hype entering their sophomore seasons, and helped the Dragons to two more state titles. In his high school career, Dodge was a part of three state title teams, and helped Carroll win 49 straight games (which tied a big-school state record), a mythical national championship in 2006, and compile a 80-1 record through last year's season-opener against Lake Highlands. He was also named the 2006 Associated Press 5A Offensive Player of the Year, and was a 2007 first-team all-state selection. "It's sad. It's bittersweet," Riley said this morning. "I think we put our stamp on Texas high school football the past few years. It's going to be hard to do that again. I don't think they'll forget us." Riley said his shoulder has improved dramatically, and that he has full range of motion. He also said he can begin throwing a football again in March. -Trae Thompson
  6. Texas gets "Perrillouxed" 11:55 AM Wed, Feb 06, 2008 | Permalink Todd Wills E-mail News tips Texas fans have been here before. As was the case in 2005 when Ryan Perrilloux announced on signing day he was spurning the Longhorns for LSU, Ventura Calif. running back Darrell Scott stunned UT faithful when he told the ESPN world he was signing with Colorado. Maybe Tre' will see some time at RB afterall.
  7. More from the Recruiting Blog Weird experience Derek Tomlin could've been up on the stage with his teammates this morning, but his playing days are over. The Southlake Carroll linebacker originally committed to UNT, but decommitted and instead is just going to attend Texas A&M as a student. "It was a little different," Tomlin said of watching his teammates sign. "This was weird." Tomlin, who plans to study math, said he didn't change his mind instantly, and that there was a bunch of factors he weighed in his decision. When asked if he thought he'd get the itch to play again, Tomlin didn't hesitate. "I know I will,'' he said. "I've been playing since the first grade. You can't just stop." Tomlin said he's looking forward to College Station, but that excitement was tempered today. "Not so much today," he said. "It's bittersweet." -Trae Thompson

  9. This is the fourth or fifth time they've won the recruiting crown. How many out-right titles do they have? I'll save you some time, Zero.
  10. Dragons get some space Southlake Carroll has always held its Signing Day ceremonies in the library, but it was moved this year to the auditorium. Several were happy about this switch, which provided less congestion for parents and other family members in attendance. Some news from this morning's signings: *Seven football players signed. Those included wide receiver Ethan Cunningham (William Jewell), offensive lineman Sam Schwartzstein (Stanford), offensive lineman Jake Jackson (Baylor), offensive lineman Nick Leppo (UNT), quarterback Riley Dodge (UNT), wide receiver Blake Cantu (Oregon) and running back Tre' Newton (Texas). *Talked to head coach Hal Wasson, who confirmed they found their final non-district game. It's a stunner: Galena Park North Shore. It was added on Monday, he said. The Dragons will play at home this fall, then travel down there next year. *Tre' Newton wasn't in attendance. He's enrolled early down at the University of Texas. "I talked to him Tuesday," Riley Dodge said. "He likes it, but says it's really hard." *Talked to Nick Leppo's mom, who said he's progressing on his recovery from a knee injury suffered before last season. Leppo had surgery in November, and is already building up his upper body. He's benching 280 pounds. -Trae Thompson
  11. Mean Green get steal Just got word that North Texas got a major addition this morning from Lake Highlands defensive back John Shorter. Shorter switched his commitment in the last 20 minutes from Tulsa to UNT. A good recruiting battle had gone on for Shorter, who just sent in his letter and gives North Texas depth at the DB position and help on special teams. -Trae Thompson From: FW *-telegram

  18. Now that comment is an embarrassment to the University.
  19. Gainesville Open David McNabb TheOldCoach.com Staff Matt Young has left Gainesville to become defensive coordinator at Sulphur Springs. Gainesville had consecutive 1-9 seasons under Young. Young came from Joey Florence's staff at Denton Ryan to take the place of former coach Jeff Cordell, who had departed for Greenville a month and a half earlier. Cordell's Leopards finished 13-1 and lost to Wimberley in the 2005 Class 3A Division I state championship game, two years after his Gainesville team won the title. At Sulphur Springs, Young will join head coach Greg Owens' staff to replace Steve Hale, who is leaving to take over as head coach at Fort Worth Arlington Heights. Hale in turn is taking the place of Duke Christian, the former Southeastern Oklahoma State and Bonham head coach, who is retiring from coaching.
  20. I can't believe I'm typing this, but I agree with PLUMMER. But the problem is that NT's AD is trying to sell to EVERYONE, that he has the money to build it now. I'll call BS on this until they prove to me they have the money raised. I don't know about anyone else, but NT needs to be careful when working with the fuure athletic director of Louisiana Tech. Ask RV how his trip to Rustin was?
  21. Direct link to story Brian is an outstanding representive of the University of North Texas. I am proud to call him an alum.
