Tech played SFA (23-9 last season) (24-8 the year before) and did away with them fairly convincingly in the second half. Tech had a pretty terrible 1st half against Liberty (15-16 last season) (23-12 the one prior CIT Invite) in the game after SFA. The indication is that Tech will likely bring up the rear of the Big 12 south, but this doesn't mean that Tech is a bad team. The big 12 South had 4 of the 6 teams make the tourney last year.

Article On Canales And The Coaching Search
MeanMag replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
It might seem that there is some opportunity for Neinas to be "unethical", but when you've built your reputation on being a matchmaker, I'm sure Neinas takes his job very seriously. College football isn't the only sport that has a Neinas type. -
In this case, we should hire Canales for sure, because they come as a package, right? Leavitt wouldn't go back to being an assistant, especially for what we'd pay him. If this were as sure of a thing as your expectation leads you to believe, we'd already have a coach announced. 1. They worked well in the past with Leavitt as HC. 2. Leavitt has made enough in the past to stay out of work if he wants 3. Canales could pluck Leavitt's brain on building a program and take all the credit? 4. Is there an echo in here? It'd be nice, but I'd never expect that happen.

What makes you think this? You're really going out on a limb with this expectation.

Game At Wrigley Will Have Only One Endzone
MeanMag replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
I read that the field used to run from home plate to left field as well. Wonder why they decided to change it? Yahoo Article The following rule changes were determined to be the best of all options and will be in effect for this game only based on the unique layout of the field. 1) All offensive plays will head toward the West end zone, including all extra points and all overtime possessions. 2) All kickoffs will be kicked toward the East end zone. 3) After every change of possession, the ball will be repositioned for the offense to head toward the West end zone. 4) As a result of a coin toss held by the conference office Friday morning, Illinois will occupy the West team bench in the first half and Northwestern will occupy the West team bench in the second half and for all overtime periods. -
Game At Wrigley Will Have Only One Endzone

This whole idea is terrible. Does the quarterback have to yell out a number before he throws the ball? -
Just to further temper anyone's expectations: KU is 117-5 at home under Self.

Or it could be there were only 5 posts because it's an SMU board and not a UNT board. Anytime there is a thread longer than 0 posts about SMU on this board it boggles my mind. Even this thread. Who Cares what SMU thinks of us beating Tech? I just want to hear about how miserable the Tech fans are.

What's going on tomorrow? You act like it's a big day or something...

This is also the 3rd year of DeLoach being here. In Deloach's tenure here before, the 3rd year is when the defense had the biggest improvement. Within the next 2 years Deloach had this defense in the top 10 in scoring. I'm not saying if he stays, we'd have that same kind of improvement over the next couple of years, but I do think it's plenty of time to get his players in place and playing the Deloach system.

This year's improvement is apparent in the Numbers: Turn Over Ratios 2007 to present: 2007: -11 2008: -17 2009: -14 2010: -1 This Year under the Coaches: Dodge: -6 Canales: +5 Yes, it's a little unfair to judge Dodge this season like that. Dodge's competition has been a little stiffer, but the good thing about this season is K State is still in front of us, so we get to see the Canales game plan against them.
-
I've seen the same as you through 2 games. So far, both teams have not let us get out and run very much, which is where we have really hurt opponents in the past. They are forcing us into a half court game with slower tempos. It wasn't until the second half that I saw our team not shy away from contact in the paint. Tristan getting +1s may have inspired the rest of the team. We also looked pretty good when we moved the offense through Edwards at the charity stripe to collapse the zone and he was able to find the open guy. I haven't looked at the stats, but Josh White seems to be in a slump from beyond 3. It doesn't matter too much right now with Dom taking up the slack.

I read something the other day that said in the "old system" North Texas would have been a 13 or 14 seed, but are a 15 seed in the new system. So, that leads to the question, how does a 13 or 14 seed in the old system equal a 15 in the new system?
-
I get your point. It would seem though, that it would have to have come up in conversation between the two. Even if it wasn't a top priority, I'd be willing to bet it crossed both of their minds.
-
So, No to Canales too LoveMG? Why do you feel that a coordinator isn't the way to go? There aren't a whole lot of former head coaches out there clamoring to get back in to coaching.
-
Any of those compelling options not been thrown out on the board yet?
-
Mark Stoops is a name that I haven't heard, but has me HIGHLY intrigued. I think it would be a very big buzz hire, and have quite a bit of legitimate upside.
-
Ron Mendoza is long, long gone....
-
Of course it crossed Canales' and RVs mind. I think it's highly unlikely and borderline slander to suggest that Canales would sabotage this thing, but if Canales being a head coach wasn't on their mind at the time, then UNT made the wrong decision by hiring Canales for assistant coach.
-
There is some excellent discussion on this topic. After 2 weeks, I can't make a judgment on Canales yet. I do think he is a more than suitable candidate for the job, and that if we don't keep him, someone will be extremely happy to get him. Lucky for UNT, we get to try him out and continue the diligent search for a better candidate. My question is, if we didn't intend for Canales to be an option, why did we hire him for OC when we knew the likely scenario would be Dodge leaving before the end of the year? Canales and UNT knew this season would be a possibility when they signed on the dotted line. Neither side should have signed in good faith if they didn't think that he was a man that could lead this team. The fact is, fans will likely be skeptical of an unknown hire until proven otherwise and be let down by a big name hire when he wins less games than we all anticipated. Canales becomes less of an unknown this season, and our expectations get tempered if he is the man for the job. One thing is certain, however. We can't get any worse than the past few years, and he wants to be here. If Bower is brought in, and Canales doesn't get serious consideration, I am one angry alum.

What Is The Difference On Defense Today?
MeanMag replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Comment from a former Dodge/Mendoza player: "Mendoza doesn't know anything about football. He's just an ex-marine that yells and knows how to over PT his players." "I knew that Dodge wasn't going to win when I heard he was taking Mendoza with him to college." -
I've obviously struck a nerve with a thread started in jest. Don't worry North Texas Super fans, the time to have your picture displayed prominently at the top of the board will be here in time.
