Thoughts on UNT vs. Navy in Ft. Worth? (Armed Forces Bowl)
MeanMag replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Because it would be a chance to swap team for team with the Hawaii bowl in the interests of proximity. If both bowls get attendance boosts by switching the cusa and mw teams, it could be a win win. -
UNT in extension talks with McCarney, bowl info
MeanMag replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yep, He signed a 5 year contract 3 years ago, it's time for extension talks. -
This is why I'm not a fan of it . And compressor station noise pollution.

Not just a cause, THE sole cause.

Yahoo! Bowl Projections- UNT left home
MeanMag replied to Green Nightmare's topic in Mean Green Football
If we don't get into hod it will be because we didn't win when it mattered, not because our athletic dept is supposed to find time to lobby bowl officials outside of hosting them for a couple games, begging a prestigious non BCS location to take a team that is 8-4 over a team that is 9-4 and lost in a championship game to play a BCS conference team. -
No doubt. Since they beat us, it would look better for them to beat ULL,

its a good situation for anything really. 2nd and 4 is what coaches refer to as staying on schedule. The worst thing for a series is to have a negative first down. A low completion percent on first down is very difficult to overcome.

Great thread. Calimeangreen, Eastwood and meangreen09 all have plus 1s in their future when I get to a comp for basing positions on statistics. I can't remember a season where our avg margin of victory has ever been this high, I'd have to go to the tape. The game plans have for the most part been trying to establish something in the first half and adjusting to the situation in the 2nd half. The only exception seemed to be utsa. I think we may have been a little apprehensive/slow in the 3rd qtr to adjust offensively. A lot of times play calls in the 1st half may be to give a look or setup another call out of the same formation later in the game.

They have E. Carolina in the HOD? REALLY?
MeanMag replied to pogWo4life's topic in Mean Green Football
Not at all. Want to know about a particular team? go to a forum. BR is nothing but word counts and click traffic mongering. linking to them and their stupid stories is exactly what they want. It's like the National Inquirer for sports, only worse. -
Every successful opponent play goes to the opposite side of the field from Buyers.

The downside to social media : Some Bama fan's react to PK Foster
MeanMag replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
This may be more of an indictment of the sadness that social media is becoming than just bama fans. People swell up hard when it's just words on a computer screen. -
It'll be interesting to see what SEC does with Liberty and how the BCS shakes out after the conference championship week. There are currently 10 SEC teams eligible, and depending on what happens in the BCS rankings, an SEC team may be left out of the National Championship game for the first time in a long, long time.

That's not my argument. I'm a left brain kind of guy that likes examples and statistics. Instead of making unsubstantiated claims that we are running at the wrong times, I'd kind of like to know what those times are. It's not odds if you can't define a right and wrong time. There are many times that a play works and we do not give credit for being unpredictable, because what was executed was to plan, but as soon as things don't get executed to plan, it obviously becomes the wrong time for that type of play call. Many people say our offense is predictable and vanilla (even when it works), and when something goes wrong on a play call that is unpredictable, it's labeled a bad play call. The predominant theory on this board is that we run a lot on first down, but in fact, we don't. Often the run/pass mix is determined by the score of the game, and it will be for all teams in all situations except Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State and all of the play station fun and gun offensive thoeries.

I've seen a lot of pass plays on 1st downs this game. You really only have 2 options on either first or second down, and a negative run or an incomplete pass put you behind schedule. The run is working, so who cares how many times we pass one 1st or second. It doesn't matter what we do, it's working. And the lines you are drawing are strawman.

It doesn't really matte franchise it's a fair statement. The people who think we run at the wron times only focus on when it doesn't work. Whic has been often, but there have been times when it has worked as well. I'm kind of curious as to how much.

I didn't hear it from a poster. And you are right, I don't know what it would take, just that if we need to make a change, we can.

The Curious Case of Connor Means: Why UNT offered
MeanMag replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
Maybe I should go back and re read the original post, but I didn't see a whole lot of talking crap. Just an interesting discussion on player development, staying coachable, and that past results may not be indicative of future success. I believe there's a lot of truth to that statement. The last thing anyone wants on this board is for a family member to feel like we aren't pulling for their 17-18 year old kid. I think it was a pretty good defense of why we should be very interested in player progression. I think we have a great coaching staff and environment to allow that to happen. -
From everything I hear, this is simply not the case. We can't go through coaches like diapers, but we have some room to correct a situation such as this. With the off season improvements, there is evidence to support it. Even Western Kentucky had to wait until 1 1/2 years to see if their coach could sustain what the previous one did.

I sure hope so on your last point. When we started the UTSA game I counted at least 3 attempts early that would have gone for big yards. Receivers had their men beat. It wasn't the we were not trying early. It's that it wasn't working. Is passing and missing over and over better than banging a head against wall by running? If a qb is off, for whatever reason, running is less dangerous.
-
We pass as much as we run... People mistake missed throws and dropped passing plays for either run plays or plays that never happened.
-
Best news is Freddie Warner getting back to playing and hopefully getting some practice time between now and the bowl game. Good news.

I understand, I was referring more to Rice. I don't see why the HoD wouldn't want the best team available from texas (or LaTech) in a given year if they aren't already in the liberty bowl. What's the worst record a team has had in the HoD?
-
I could see HoD taking the best record of UTSA, Rice, UNT if that team is not in the liberty. HoD is not a given for us. Don't set yourselves up for disappointment. We still have games to play and win.

The last time unt beat Tulsa was 1968. Since then we have lost 10 straight to them. The only one of those losses we were favored in was in 2005 at home when we were favored by 1 and got a safety on the first series. From that point forward, we did not score again and Tulsa went on to roll up 54 points. That was the beginning of the end for dickey and our run of conference titles if I remember correctly.
