After doing some reseach on Mr. Al Goldfield
MeanMag replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't beleive so. But they do have quite a few children that could have. These people are really nice. Forbes As for the Iraq comment... It is actually French. The name of the property is Champ D'Or and it means "fields of gold" in french. A lot of the furnishings have been imported. More Even More I was invited to a gathering a year or 2 ago at the house through some mutual aquaintances and the house and the owners are amazing. Really neat people actually. There is also a whole site devoted to the house, i'll see if I can dig it up again... -
So, about a year or two ago I mentioned these folks as potential donors... Boy, that is something. I had a very high opinion of them before this and thought that they were very nice people. This is icing on the cake. Great news! Thank you Goldfields!!

I didn't say a better team, I said a better NT. Had you bothered to realize I was talking about a much larger picture you might even agree with me.
-
Your perception of the current college football landscape and NT's current position in it is fairly inaccurate. The Dickey regime was good, and he has left a better NT behind. It is time to move on for him, but to keep slamming and bashing the man is totally classless on our part considering what he has done. I believe that most on this board feel that way, therefore, I will take GreenGuyBass's side on this issue and join in saying, realize where NT is and where it needs to get to. While Dickey's record compared to the past is not stellar, in todays environment it should be considered quite an accomplishment for a team that has spent some time at the 1-AA level not too long ago, and searching for a better conference, and donors.

Tell me you didn't see some stunt coming by letting him coach the last 3 games... I am really not surprised. I am more upset about the play than anything else.
-
I must say, I agree with you whole-heartedly on this one, as illustrated on another post. The uniforms looked horrible on TV, but the game was 10x worse. The cold-heartedness of some on this board is nothing short of astonishing.

Honestly, Run Blocking looked good. Might have been Robertson making them look good, but I saw a couple of really good lead blocks by fullbacks, linemen, and WR's. Offense looked good... aside from Meager. Pass blocking and pocket protection was the same story, we have got to get better at it next year. I know we can improve on it, the "green team" might do this a little better.

Well Nothing new tonight except all in black

I don't give 2 Sh*ts about the damn uniforms. They looked like crap on TV. Whatever... What I do care about, The Game... There are 2 people, maybe 3 we can blame for this loss. Meager: Turnovers commited by Meager led to 14 direct points and detracted at least 3. In a one point game that is huge. Dickey: It really pained me to his head down on the sideline, I know he really wanted this win, it was obvious. The telecast was quick to have that shot and hold it. I really, really felt for him. That aside, his coaching tonight was flawed to say the least. First of all, allowing Meager to stay in after a fumble and an ill-advised throw... or even starting him for that matter. I just think Phillips has the hotter hand and I am partial to the hot-hand. Second, When you are at the 40 with not much time left and any timeouts left and are down by one where a field goal will win it, run the ball. For Dickey this should have been a no brainer- play it conservatively. Run the ball stay in the center of the field and pick up the yardage to make it an easier FG. Especially the way Robertson was running the ball. Hind-sight is 20-20, but really I expected a run if Leach, or June Jones were coaching, I really did. Ramon Flanigan: I don't know if he had any say in the final series, but for all of the above reasons, if he did, it's his fault too. -
NCAA DivIA Football Coaches' Compensations

Welcome to the party and Post more, PLEASE!!! That is a very informative read, and I like your analysis. -
Well, you don't hunt elephants in downtown Chicago. If you want to be a serious, legendary football coach, wouldn't you want to go where football is king? Wouldn't you want to make your name where you would have the most opportunity to do so? Wouldn't you want the best players and the hotbed recruiting scene that is Texas? What if he likes Hawaii, but it just isn't Texas to him? Maybe he is unhappy that NO one cares if he plays D or not... It sounds like he wants a shot, and at 65... he has lots of experience to make a go of it. And deserves consideration IMO.

I have a feeling "We Are Marshall" might be a good one...\ And, Did anyone see "Invincible"?

Apparently Channel 8 dropped his name? Anyone else heard or confirm this? Isn't he kind of old at this point?

I really don't understand the MM bashing on this board. The man just gave us 1 million dollars, hopefully he will give more. Name the practice fields after Dickey. It is my opinion there should be something done to commemorate his accomplishments anyhow. His friend just got fired from his alma mater. I am sure there are a lot of emotions running through him. When he calms down and another coach is in here and winning, and maybe even another of Mac's friends, we need to be there willing to accept whatever donation he is willing to give us without badmouthing him for holding the program hostage. I just have a sick feeling that some on these boards are willing to bite the hand that feeds us to make a point. We don't have that many hands feeding us yet. To be honest with you, I wish I had the kind of money to donate and tell the athletic department what to do with it and someday maybe I will. We look like ungrateful people who feel like we are entitled to his money no matter what. He is only doing what many of you were thinking about doing... Not buying season tickets anymore because they were upset with the way things were being run. Or threatening to end MGC donations until we start winning again. You can do it and make a point, but if Mac does it he's holding the program hostage? Maybe you think that because of the amount of money involved...

DRC article on DD/ Mattress Mac add, Presidents/

The NCAA also makes exceptions for extenuating circumstances. Such as some players from school who have to take care of loved ones, in certain situations. I read a story in Sports Illustrated about a player (I forget which school it was) who was the legal guardian of his little brother because his mom was a crack addict and his dad was in jail or something and the NCAA ok'd money from donors to help with his situation. They (the NCAA) aren't as nasty as some would like to think. -
Looks right, WKU is 54...

Good post... I think this has A LOT to do with it. Cobbs knew what it took and was a student of the game and i think some of it rubbed off on Thomas his freshmen year.

To clarify Flyers' point, Stebo, I think what he is trying to say is that it's the losses to those same sub .500 teams that has him even more upset. It does me too. It doesn't bother me at all that all of those wins were coming against sub .500 teams during those winning seasons, because that is just about all we had a chance to play, and it meant that we weren't losing to them (which would be 10x worse). I am not upset that we lost to OU, UT, Kstate. I am upset with the way we lost to them most of the time. It would have been nice to get wins against AirForce, South Florida, Southern Miss, Memphis, Colorado St., Tulsa, Akron. Those losses have me upset, but what has me even more upset is the losses against Ulala, Troy, La Tech, LaMo., MTSU. If we can't beat the sub .500 teams, how can we possibly expect to take care of business against the above .500 teams?

DRC Let the search begin..lays out ground rules
MeanMag replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
These two names really caught my eye. I still like Sonny Dykes, and the OC from TCU, and even Dodge... McCarney just for the name recognition. Bruce Chambers because he sculpted a National Championship team at Texas, always brings in good talent and has the rolodex that comes with that. Also, he is an alum and I would love to see what he could accomplish with this team especially with his ability to evaluate talent. How exciting -
I think the timing couldn't have been better. The university has given Dickey the opportunity to test the waters and given itself the opportunity to fine a replacement and be in the running with all of the other openings at the end of the year. It gives both sides to explore all options. As for mattress mac: I sure wish his intent was to improve North Texas and become the alum that became famous for the improvement of the Mean Green Football Team and not the alum that saved Dickey's job. I am not going to agree with the good riddance comment, because to be honest we need all the support we can get, but by no means should it be a hinderance to tough decisions that must be made.

I personally like the move to let RV have complete control over who he gets in here. I truly think that RV likes it here at North Texas, and that is the most important part. It means if he likes it here enough to stay here, he is going to need to do his job to the best of his ability and I think that RV is very able. I really feel like RV is starting to put the puzzle pieces together for UNT to make serious runs at local and regional talent. It is also nice to have the accountablility that comes with RV making the choice. It isn't up to persons with absolutely no idea of what NT athletics is all about. Search committees are fine and everything, but if it is full of folks who do not know anything prior to being invited to the search committee about NT athletics, I don't want them having a say in it.
