Vito: Defense Not Living Up To The Hype For U N T
MeanMag replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
That might be the understatement of the year. Vito attributed the difference to Dickey playing almost exclusively zone. IMO we haven't had much luck in man, and I really think our defense has the smarts to play zone. I mean, they did it last year and it wasn't broke, so why screw with it? -
While your real arguments are valid, giving him a chance is what we've done for the past year. It's time for him to start giving us a reason, and this past game showed us a little something. BTW 1 INT every 20 throws is way too many. If you want to judge interceptions to throws, you should judge touchdown throws to INT's. In my mind that is a better indicator of how effecient, or effective a QB is.

I totally agree, this was after the receiver had juked the defender out of his shoes, and outran another. But he couldn't outrun Roman. I think he was a great addition to this team, and a late one at that, in an area we are not so deep at.

I was waiting for this to come up. Really, you can't put all of this on him. We are getting no defensive pressure. He made a tackle where he up-ended the offensive player. Might have been one of the best hits of the night. He chased down a receiver to the 2 freaking yard line, when the rest of our defense was sucking wind because they got burned so bad and he was on the opposite sideline. I don't know if anyone remembers that play, you know, the one where their WR caught it and froze the db in their tracks and out ran the rest of the defense. If all of our players had his heart we could be scary.
-
That guy made some good hits tonight. I don't know if he wouldn't get burned in coverage so much at line backer, but he looks like he's not afraid to be out there and get dinged up a bit. That and the fact that Dodge keeps running him out there makes me believe he brings more to the table.

Just Got Back...game Observations From Smu's Side
MeanMag replied to Got5onIt's topic in Mean Green Football
Not really..... Want to know why we can no longer comment on the attractiveness of current scholarship athletes? -
I completely believe in our personnel. This defense played pretty well last year, I'm just wondering where all that went? It was supposed to be our strong point this year. We proved tonight, it doesn't take "Dodge's guys" to be productive. They just need to be given some chances, and they are doing great.

God, I wish we could pretend that we've all been off the board for just enough time to have seen a beautiful naked girl before. Then we could stop talking about how hot we all know our North Texas students are and not look like horny old D bags. Seriously. -
I Must Have Watched A Different Game Than Many

I know he did, he looked pissed off too, that they weren't even going to look at it. I saw more fire out of that O-line coach after those dumb ass penalties. It's nice to have people that give a shit. Our O-line played really well tonight for the most part (side from the crucial penalties). -

He had all day to pass in some cases, and still made some bad decisions. He could have figured out the meaning of life sometimes, and still have chosen the wrong thing to do in many cases. BTW, WTF was up with not reviewing or challenging the catch where i swear their WR's knee hit the ground in the backfield after the catch? -
Honestly, I think it's crazy that we beat this same SMU team last year. They looked like shit last year, and this team was way more prepared this time. That being said, our defense isn't even close to the one we had last year. I was real sad to see some of the assistant coaches from last year leave. I know you can't have your cake and eat it to, but to me it seems we may have traded for a high power offense (admitted it's fun to watch) and gotten rid of the head hunting, amazing defense of not too long ago.

Did anyone else notice after we had a dropped pass on a slant with a wide open field for a touchdown right before the half that our receivers came out and actually started throwing the ball around with the qb on the sideline after the half? Is this common practice? Because I don't think I remember seeing that back when Dickey was here.

The one play we decided to send an extra lb we forced an interception. that's what getting pressure on a qb does and it is something we need to do more often.

I will totally agree with this argument. You are dead on. The second we run into a good coverage team deep is the second that we can't recover from those god awful false start penalties. -
McNair is a hoss. If they could figure out a way to take him out of the game, then Louisville can probably bring the offensive production of MTSU to a halt.

Middy looks good, but that defense of louisville looks horrendous.

Defensive Schemed Lauged At By Ou Coaches?

I will have a hard on for you if you are right. God, I hope you are too. Not because I want a hard on, but because I want to see another few UNT wins before this season is over. -
I agree with everything except for attacking players. I have no problem saying anyone played bad, but the truth is I can't make a fair judgement when playing OU. I like Evyn Roman. He plays balls out on every single play. That is the type of attitude Craig Jones, Jonas Buckles, Brad Kassell, and co. played with back when we were bad ass on defense. We need more like him, it would help if they were a little bit taller, but damn. I still think this guy is lightning in a bottle, just because he refuses to stop playing. We HAVE got to make plays on defense. I know we were mismatched with speed. cheat outside a step or 2 to keep them from going outside. It looked like we did pretty decent defending in the middle of the field, and the line actually plugged holes very well. We didn't really play on their side of the line of scrimmage, something I have come to be accustomed to with Booger and Awasom. I could stand not pressuring so much, if we were better in coverage and hopefully we will be. The jury is out on the defense, the offense looked to get some things done, but really the jury is still out on them too. Saturday will paint a better picture.

The years we finished top15 in overall defense I wouldn't say we had superior team speed. We did have an ability to blow up the line and force mistakes all over the field. To totally disrupt what an offense was doing. Disrupting and surprising offenses is play call affected IMO.

Defensive Schemed Lauged At By Ou Coaches?
MeanMag replied to Green Crazy's topic in Mean Green Football
I listened into the sooner radio network after the game and they had the OU rb's coach on and he said- Their defense was very plain and vanilla. We expected them to do a lot of what they did in High school, and they did. Nothing surprised us. We could have kept putting up points if we wanted to. I don't know about you fellas. But, I'm not feeling too good about our defensive coaches, if they feel that doing the same thing will get us anywhere. I know Dodge rewards loyalty, and preaches family, but if the time comes, I hope he can cut ties with people dragging him and us down. I'm not ready to make that verdict yet, I am just saying that I will be noticing this more.
