If our coaches are savvy, they could use this portal cycle to show potential recruits UNT is where you can come to raise your profile and then get paid elsewhere. There is still hope for year to year success.

Very interesting outlook. Accepting what comes…lemons into lemonade. Hats off to you!

To read your write up, you would have thought we lost.  Just kidding but cheer up man, this team we have here is reallt quite good.  Enjoy the moment.

I know it’s still early and the team is still gelling with one another. Just wanting to see more production and consistency from our new transfers. I’m just a bit impatient is all

Hypothetically, if he starts next season as bad as this season, do we "give him another year because insert excuse here"?

There’s no way he gets to run this defense to the ground two years in a row. He may not get fired, but they at least need to demote him. He may not get out of non-conference schedule if the defense is a replay of last year

I've found the guy we need.

Nate Reiling- New Mexico State DC. Current Salary: $195,000

In Dreiling’s first season in Las Cruces, the NM State defense turned heads across the nation. Dreiling inherited a defense that ranked 127th in total defense among FBS schools. The ‘22 Aggies were the most improved defensive unit in college football, climbing 98 spots to 29th in the nation.

His NMSU defense looks solid tonight against Liberty's high-powered offense (5th in the FBS). That game is tied at the half.

I bet they practice tackling also

So, you fire our current DC in less than 1 season.  What coach of any caliber would hire on to that situation.  I want you to come on and “fix” our defense….and if you don’t do it immediately, we will fire your ass and go find somebody else.

    great incentive to come here

dont throw that USC fired their DC.  How long has he been there??  SC was supposed to be competing for a Natty….not rebuilding under a new staff.

He was the worst defense. THE WORST! I bet if you approach other DC candidates, they’ll say they can do much better…everyone of them

Kernal coming with Burton from Commerce has been a special get for the squad--top-5 nationally in FTM (tied with Caitlin Clark). Obviously it's very early in the season, but so far this is the best-rated WBB team we've had on CBB Reference.

She’s been really good for us. I just love her game.
PG play needs to be better IMO. We don’t really have anyone to set up or playmake for us (except Kernal).

  7. I thought CJ Noland would be much better for us. Up to now, he hasn’t stood out. I thought he would come in to provide an offensive punch, but I have been mistaken. He hasn’t really made any mistakes, so that’s always a plus.
it was nice to see John Buggs get it going early. Too bad he was quiet the rest of the game, though. I liked how he was able to get shots up. We need him to get into a rhythm to get him going before conference games start.
Ruben looked more aggressive offensively. I liked how he shot the 3 ball when he was open instead of swinging it or driving it in.
Glad we won, but I’m ready to see more competitive teams to go against.

  8. I get it…the shock value of our guys leaving will be high at the moment, since all we’re going to hear are the kids that want to enter the portal. Hopefully, things will calm down once we start hearing/knowing who have transferred in. Being a highly ranked offense, not only in our conference, but NATIONALLY, should attract kids to mitigate the offensive loses…hopefully. Defensively, I just can’t believe whomever we replace/add can be any worse than what we had…right?

  9. Stings to have Ayo and Maclin declare, but this will, unfortunately, be the norm. Only way we can limit the perennial exits is if we break through like UTSA. Even though they have kids transferring, they also get some good players in return. That’s why we can’t afford to throw seasons away. So, I’m hoping Caponi and this defense improves greatly , or else UNT will continue on the treadmill of mediocrity.

Bigger Brand of Football? We don't have a bigger brand of football compared to the places the players you want to attract would come from. I don't think the fans will be happy with the FCS and DII guys coming up a few levels. Please explain your bigger brand theory.

Just because they’re DII or FCS guys doesn’t mean they’re all bad. You will always have talented kids that end up there and would like the opportunity to level up. So, why not in the AAC which is a respectable conference compared to CUSA and the like.

I’m not saying UNT itself is a “big brand” of football. However, playing in the AAC should be intriguing to them, and UNT should try to capitalize on that.

All of this is very interesting. Many on this board have preached all year that most of the players except Rogers, a few receivers, and the RBs were no good and needed replaced. You are getting your wish. UNT is taking the Texas State approach and you will see at least 50 new players next year. All the talk of culture and family is out the window and since we have no real NIL, they likely won’t be the dominant power 5 transfers you want.  It will be interesting to see what it looks like come fall camp. I hope it’s successful.

If this is the way, so be it. We can’t compete financially, so we need alternative methods. I mean, we’re in the AAC now. We have to be appealing to kids from other programs wanting to break into a bigger brand of football if you want to call it that

And for all the talk about how small we are and how we got pushed around- why isn’t the strength staff taking any heat?

To be fair, they also just started this year. Let’s see how they do this upcoming season where we can better gauge how effective they are.
But I’m with you. I saw a lack of strength at the point of attack too many times.

I honestly believe this is a jimmy and joes problem. I can see morris giving him a full off season to over haul the defense. How many times over the year was there a guy in the postion to make a play and either whiffed on a tackled or didnt execute. More times than not. Even if you fired caponi and made another hire I think you are just setting back progress. 3rd DC in 5 years is not the answer.

I’m not excusing the players at all. And, you’re definitely right - players are part of the problem. But, this is UNT. These will be the kind of players we often get until we breakthrough like UTSA has. Until the , the coaches need to possibly scheme for the players instead of vice versa
