You might be proving my point. It’s not your job to teach them civics. It’s your job to enforce their correct knowledge of civics. If they do not have that knowledge, you punish them, in some regard. If our coaching staff punished everyone that couldn’t tackle, we’d be out of players. They have no choice but to deal with what they have and spend time on schemes, positioning and reads. If they can’t tackle, “we’ll do the best we can.” The coaches and this team are getting by with what they have and finding a way to make it work best they can, which is why we relish a 7-win season and a bowl loss, year after year.

But, do we? Yes, they continue to make adjustments. Credit. But what about the first half? Game after game after game. Is it scouting? Is it preparation? Is it scheming? We’ve got a bad defense, masked by playing some bad teams. If there isn’t defensive success in the first half, the next 3 games are going to be rough. you can celebrate 2nd half adjustments if you want. But I’m holding out for 4Q of defensive effort because we were prepared going into the game. Haven’t seen that yet.

By the time they get here, it’s too late. You can’t blame the DC for their inability to tackle. You probably can’t even blame their HS coach. I’d go back to middle school. It’s not taught and when they fail at tackling, there are no repercussions. People want and need instant gratification now. If the defender can knock someone down by just running into them, the Coach is OK with that because mission accomplished. Teaching technique, on a broad scale, is a rarity these days.
