WR Darius Terrell?

Shouldn't Ruder already have a built in advantage against Rodgers since he has been here for 3-4 years? Just seems like we need to give Rodgers the benefit of the doubt as a brand new face in the program who is still absorbing everything at UNT.

While Dabney and a handful of other players were coming back from injuries, Baylor had a total of 24 newcomers going through their first spring workouts with the program, including 10 Division I transfers. "I think it's really unusual to hit on all your transfers," Grimes said of a group that includes offensive linemen Clark and Campbell Barrington from BYU, running back Dominic Richardson from Oklahoma State, wide receiver Ketron Jackson Jr. from Arkansas and tight end Jake Roberts from North Texas. Sophomore transfer Sawyer Robertson from Mississippi State was part of a quarterback battle this spring with Shapen, the returning starter. On Saturday, Shapen was 11-of-20 for 100 yards and one TD predominantly against the No. 1 defense, while Robertson was 9-of-16 for 170 yards and two TDs versus mostly the second-teamers. "I look at Sawyer, I look at his ability to run, he's got a moxie and kind of a spirit that's contagious," fourth-year head coach Dave Aranda said. "I think his growth and his learning is just going to take off because of his want-to with everything." Coming off a disappointing 6-7 finish in 2022, for Shapen "to walk around and carry that can be heavy," Aranda said. "And then, to put in the work and to make changes and to confront the things that were holding you back, and to do it in a way to not bring attention to yourself but really just to focus on the specifics of the thing is a way cool thing to see," he said. "You see a dude just kind of grow up, really mature. So, that's happening right now for Blake, and we're excited for him." Robertson had TD passes of 14 yards to Jonathan Davidson in the first half of Saturday's scrimmage and a 57-yarder to Monaray Baldwin in the second half. "I saw a lot of energy, a lot of leadership," Dabney said of the two quarterbacks, "and I think they both showed that they can make any throw on the field and move the ball with whatever group they were in. I think we saw a lot of good things from both of them today. I'm so proud of both of those guys." Roberts was the game's leading receiver with five catches for 60 yards, while Richardson picked up 46 yards rushing on eight carries. First-semester freshman running back Bryson Washington led the rushing attack with 67 yards on 11 totes. Read more: https://baylorbears.com/news/2023/4/23/football-a-chance-to-put-on-that-jersey

Gumms eventually showed why he garnered early attention from the likes of the Longhorns and Tigers. He was one of the best young tight ends in the country last season, breaking North Texas single-season records for receptions (34) and receiving yards (458) by a tight end. His five touchdown catches were one shy of tying the school record. Pro Football Focus gave him a 71.9 overall grade on 444 offensive snaps and he earned first-team All-CUSA honors from the league’s coaches. The Athletic and College Football News named him a second-team Freshman All-American. That kind of production made Gumms a prime candidate to hit the transfer portal and pursue better opportunities, especially after North Texas fired Littrell, but he originally chose to stick around and play for new head coach Eric Morris. He discussed that decision in an interview with the Mean Green Show on Dec. 20. “I can feel the energy…when he goes out to the public and even when he came in for the talk with us,” Gumms said. “I felt the energy that he was going to bring and I feel like he was a great fit for here, so I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m staying.’ I trust what he’s going to do and I trust that who he’s going to bring in is going to produce and change this thing around and get stuff started around here at North Texas.” As the Mean Green prepared to begin spring practice, Morris talked about Gumms being a key piece to what he hoped to do offensively. “Gumms is perfect for what we want to do and is someone we can keep on the field,” Morris said before spring drills began. “He is skilled enough to play wideout and is strong enough to play in the core as a tight end.” However, just a few minutes after tight ends coach Chris Gilbert talked about him being part of North Texas’ plans on March 23, Gumms announced his intent to enter the transfer portal when the spring window opened April 15. It was a situation reminiscent of a couple of former Arkansas football players. Defensive end Jordan Domineck announced he would return for his super senior season with the Razorbacks only to change his mind about a month later and enter the transfer portal. He ended up landing with Colorado. Read more: https://www.bestofarkansassports.com/arkansas-football-north-texas-tight-end-varkeyes-gumms-transfer-portal-2023/

Like can we make lemons out of lemonade? Can we sell the next great point guard or perhaps the replacement for Varkeys Gumms that if you come here you could propel yourself to a Blue Blood program like Drez to Georgia? Just wondering if any of your MBAs have some business ideas on how to use this circumstance to your advantage.

Coach Morris on the Transfer Portal
meangreenfaninno replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
Craven definitely hates UNT so everything he says we should all rake with a grain of salt. Remember, he chastised us for having the audacity to fire Seth. That tells you where his loyalties lie. -
Is it just me or do we need to do whatever is needed or possible to retain this guy? He seems to have made a huge impact in the caliber and quality of recruits we are landing. I just worry that a P5 school will money whip him into leaving us. In addition, this entire staff seems to be a huge upgrade in terms of recruiting effort and results.

Man I totally agree, and I sometimes wonder who is running Denton? Is there anyone at the helm? Seems like they let all the surrounding cities outflank them when it comes to planning and building infrastructure. I think a lot of it is the small businesses are so entrenched in keeping things as is that there is never enough momentum to overcome it. The city really needs some new leadership or it will become a gas stop on the way to Oklahoma.

We gave try to this and it never worked out. The small motels (and believe me there are many of them in Denton) cried when they were considering a convention center and luxury hotel on the old golf course. There are too many greedy small motel owners in Denton to overcome I’m afraid.
