Eric Morris visits The San Antonio QB Club - Part 2
Side.Show.Joe replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
If Morris wants to interject the 3-3-5 in situations, that's one thing, but to keep it as the featured defense when it is an obvious failure is just being stubborn. That 3-3-5 placed UNT dead last defensively among all of the FBS. Using a 4-man front in just one game has moved UNT within 5 yards of not being dead last. The 3-3-5 may look great this week against ACU, but don't be fooled. Success against an FCS team isn't the same as what UNT will face when they travel to Navy on Oct 7th. We will need a 4-man front to have any chance against Navy's run heavy offense. -
So we really can't criticize the head coach, eh?
Side.Show.Joe replied to TripleGrad's topic in Mean Green Football
I admit, I was discouraged after losing to Cal the way we did. And, I was furious after losing to FIU. That loss is still inexcusable. But, I will give Morris credit for fixing our offense. The problem is that Morris is the head coach, so the defensive failures fall at his feet too. Until the defense is adequately addressed, he will continue to feel the heat. Personally, I'm a big believer in free speech, and have issues with topics and/or posts being deleted just because they may be opposed to those of the mods. We are all Mean Green fans. There has to be enough room for all of our logical concerns and opinions. I don't know why threads have been deleted, but I'd love to read a statement explaining the reasoning.- 101 replies

Morris deserves a lot of credit for making the moves to get our offense on track. I'm still confused as to how he could lead us into the season without knowing who are QB1 should be, but at least he's fixed it. I actually think his offense is more potent than Littrell's version. But, my game ball goes to Rogers. While Morris called a good game, Rogers did a masterful job of audibling into the right plays. With Rogers running the show, I think we can put up points against any team in the AAC. Unfortunately, Caponi's defense will continue to hold back our team as long as he insists on leaning on the 3-3-5.

The 4-man front resulted in back-to-back 3 and outs and about 4 yards of LT offense in the 1st quarter, but Caponi thought it would be smart not only to move back to the 3-man front, but basically stick with it for most of the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th quarters. That dude is too stupid to remain as our DC.

You have been following this team for about 2 seconds. You don't know crap. Caponi is a trash DC and he has to go. You can go with him too.

This game should not have been close. We had this game under control. Giving up 22 points in the 4th is ridiculous.

North Texas should not be this bad.

Can we fire Caponi now?
-
That stinking 3-3-5 defense is letting LT back into this game. Someone please step in and stop Caponi from running it for the rest of the game!
-
Certainly the best UNT DC this century.
-
While our 4-man front isn't perfect, it is better than our 3-man front. Both LA Tech TD's came against Caponi's 3-man front. That's not a coincidence.

TD! Glad Morris has figured out our offense. We just need to replace Caponi.
-
Caponi's 3-3-5 strikes again. We have to fire that dude. I'm done with him.
-
That's a punt. Where has this guy been?
-
Why did Caponi go back to a 3-man defensive front? I have no idea what this joker is thinking.

And look at the results.

DEFENSE FORCED A 3 AND OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw a four man front in that drive too.

Talks with Army progressing
Side.Show.Joe replied to Tommy Gadberry's topic in Conference ReAlignment
How many AAC titles does SMU's football program have? I see no reason why Army couldn't come in and outpreform what SMU accomplished on the football field as an AAC member. -
Talks with Army progressing
Side.Show.Joe replied to Tommy Gadberry's topic in Conference ReAlignment
I believe Army is busy reworking their future schedules, and the AAC is busy running the numbers by ESPN. Losing SMU in favor of Army, might just make the AAC a stronger and more valuable conference. We will see. -
Maybe I just view the portal different from most. It seems many view the portal as a place to go find replacement players when you lose some to graduation or transfer. I just don't see it that way. If there is a guy in the portal that is an upgrade over what we currently have, then go get him. We have more to offer than Texas State. As for our defensive struggles... our defense wasn't that great under Littrell either. It just wasn't historically bad, like Caponi's defense. Littrell tried to run a 3-3-5, but trashed it because he couldn't get enough line talent. There was no portal back then for Littrell to poach from. Caponi doesn't have that excuse. He just didn't bring in the players he needed. Nor did Caponi or Morris do their research regarding past attempts at such a defense. That's on our coaches. I don't know if Caponi can install a 4-man front defense in a week, but even if it sputters, it would be better than watching the 3-3-5 kill any chance of a win in Ruston.

Rogers gets the start against LA Tech
Side.Show.Joe replied to GMG_Dallas's topic in Mean Green Football
If I were Morris, I would hold back on publicly naming a starter as long as possible, just to keep LA Tech from zeroing in on stopping Rogers. Desperate times call for desperate measures. We need any advantage we can get at this point.
