Beating the spread would be a W..... Beating UTSA would be, right up there with a miracle by definition: Miracle (mir·a·cle) /ˈmirək(ə)l/ - a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is therefore considered to be the work of a divine agency. * * This is from a 100% fictionalized movie produced by Disney, take it as you will. Angels in Apogee..... It could happen! (CALLING TRADEMARK ON "ANGELS IN APOGEE") -

Agree 100% - With names this uniform combination is one of the best, feel the opposite way without the names! Huge Difference! -
Actually, I've reconsidered, I'd put it at a 1% chance or less. Considering that article is from 2011 and the last one that comes to mind is Chris Beard leaving UNLV to Texas Tech before coaching a game (and then the same Tech AD got his feelings hurt when Texas did took his coach AND UNLV did not give them permission when they asked to talk to him). Also, there's nothing to suggest that you can't do both: work behind the scenes and lock someone up early. If this is an argument against then politely, you're really grasping at straws if you're scared someone will leave early. Not a realistic chance of it happening, an outlier at best and if that is a reason an AD doesn't sign someone (Georgia Southern AD wi/Helton is getting rave reviews) - then it's seriously pathetic and inept that they would be so hamstrung by fear that they couldn't execute their job. It's like deciding not to go outside during the day ever again because you're afraid to get skin cancer - ok, that may very well work, but making that decision and acting on it is a clear and undeniable warning sign of mental illness along with not being able to accurately judge risk or process cognitive reasoning and rendered debilitated by fear. TL:DR In layman's terms: that's a copout combined with a bunch of bull!

I completely forgot that McCasland did that, I knew there was something keeping me from fully embracing the dude and I could never put my finger on it!! Yeah that's definitely a possibility but I wouldn't put the chances of that happening above 10%...... I think AD's at G5 schools should ask that question at some point, probably later in the process, and you could word it and approach it a couple of different ways like, "Whats your dream job in coaching?" or more direct: "North Texas probably wasn't your dream job coming up, but if you rattle of some 10-win seasons and a couple bowl games and had the pick of the land, what schools catch your eye?" Feel it out a little bit, and for some candidates they'd be relieved to have that conversation, especially if it's a place like Alabama, probably not going to be opening up for at least 5 years or so (just an example, I don't know the ins and outs of 'Bama, they may be crazy enough to fire Saban after a 3-Loss season!). I mean even as fans/alumni, we'd all love to say that if we were coaching at UNT we'd stay and never leave, but when a Texas, USC, Ohio State, or Florida backs that Brinks truck up, and the smell of competing for a National Championship begins to overwhelm you when they open the doors...... you've only got one life, pretty hard to turn down. So if the risk is low (that risk is always going to be there) and you can save $100k+ a year by avoiding a bidding war, that's got to be a strategy to seriously consider.
-
Just wanted to add to this..... If we get into a bidding war after the season with someone we could have locked up by making the move earlier, this is a huge red flag for me from a management standpoint. I could be mistaken but I think the money situation/scenarios would look like this: Controlled Variable (1) Keep SL/Fire SL: You're paying him either way, the money is the same. Uncontrolled Variables (A) Fire Before End of Season: Sign a new coach early and you're not in a bidding war with anyone else, save $ (B) Fire After Season: New Hire has more options with more vacancies and you may end up paying more $$$ 1A < 1B *I had to look that arrow/alligator mouth thing up again to make sure I pointed it the right and put green as good and red as bad just in case, I think I got it though. -------------------- If anyone's got eyes on the airport, could be a little bit of this action going on, Miss Terry Saban goes to work: https://www.yahoo.com/news/time-miss-terry-went-job-014617450.html Pretty neat story I think, and if you're married, sending your wife down to visit somewhere, during the season, on an all expenses paid trip, where she'll be wined and dined for a few days to 'scout' things out is quite a boss move.

Does Wren New Contract Make Financial Sense?
Pseudo Nym replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
The biggest take away for me is that the powers that be, President Smatresk, the Chancellor and Board of Regents, believe he's doing a good job by: A) Agreeing to and Announcing the Deal Further believe he's doing a really good job comparatively: B) Based on the salaries of AD's at comparative schools that have been posted here And that they believe he has a clear vision to take us to even greater heights: C) A combination both the length of time and dollar amount of the extension ------ Value of Other Sports and Program Success ------- As far as the success of sports other than football/basketball (revenue generating sports) are concerned, I also get really excited about this and personally believe it is an important part of the program, but I don't believe it's as big a piece of the puzzle that it's made out to be. As one golf coach in the SEC told me when they were offered the position at a very young age: "The last thing the AD said to me was: I don't care if you win or lose, but one hint of scandal out of your program, one word of athletes out of control, one negative headline, one semester of a low GPA and you're out." It was made clear earlier in this conversation that the AD had faith that they would build a competitive program and win and all that, but the message was absolutely clear: your program is not a priority and you are not a priority, play the game, keep it clean, don't ask for more money and you could be here for a long time. If you look at the "Olympic Sports" or "Non-Revenue Sports" you'll see a lot less turnover coaching wise, higher team GPA's across the board and coaches that are very happy to be where they're at for a long time - not saying it's right, just saying that's how it is. They're still getting paid very well. As someone who's made a living coaching basketball in college and professionally, the whole notion that you can coach a sport (game) as a job and make good money doing it is to me, completely absurd in itself; I have no illusions as to where my job ranks on the totem pole in our society, towards the bottom, so as a coach, as long as I have the bare necessities and my student-athletes are treated well, the rest is just window-dressing*. I know a lot of non-revenue/olympic sports coaches feel the same way, those are usually the people I gravitate towards the most, they keep it real and keep it in perspective! *What I'm saying is: Shaq didn't miss free-throws because he didn't have access to the best first-class facilities, staff, trainers, dieticians, coaches, technology, support, or was worried about paying rent - he had all of that and then some. I love Shaq FWIW! (Damn, I feel like the little eye roll dude is going to make an appearance 🤣) -
Thanks... I was thinking the Montreal Alouettes and checked there but that may be the only CFL team I can name lol.

@MeanGreenTexan Appreciate it, and yeah for sure I wasn't thinking like head coach or actually coaching in anyway, I just feel like with what he's done, he's had an awesome attitude, seems to be very positive all the time, I guess the corny version of it is he's someone you'd want your kids to be around and emulate, just the way he carries himself. He'll have been gone for a few seasons, new guys in that he doesn't know but they know he had success here, just someone they can directly relate to closer than a coach and talk to, and ask questions they might have but not even ask a teammate worrying about how it might sound (like, I don't want to sound selfish but how can I get more whatever whatever). And yeah when folks react with the little eye roll dude, I assume that whatever I've written is over their head since they've taken the time to process it and become so offended that they have to let the world know they're rolling their eyes, versus simply moving on. This is the image that come to mind when I see the eye roll of whoever reacted, and can't help but think that they must have evolved from the RBF (resting bitch face) to this, without even recognizing it: ......... I mean, I'll put the over/under at 6.5 little eye rolls dudes on this post and take the over.

Can anyone shed some light on this: I haven't kept up with Mason Fine since he left UNT, last I recall he signed with a CFL team and had interests in working in some form as an ambassador for the Cherokee Nation, and working his way up to the top (Sorry if I worded that incorrectly, I'm not too familiar with Native American culture). I'm not one to play in the gray area when it comes to NCAA rules, but if he has his sights set on coaching at some point, he could pursue his masters degree and intern with the UNT Strength and Condition Staff over the summer, work with current UNT Athletes at the facility and add the CSCS qualification to his resume, all well within the rules. Assuming there is a changing of the guard coming at the HC position, I think our program, regardless of who the head coach is moving forward, would benefit by having him around if he were so inclined? I think there's enough guys in the area, college to pro that it would be easy to put together offseason workouts on their own before they return to their pro/college teams in the fall, Sean Payton's still got his place in Westlake I think, Jason Witten's coaching down the road, the fields at UNT could be a great refuge for pro and college guys during the summer to get some work in (I'm thinking big now, like Rucker Park for basketball in NYC or the Drew League for Summer Pro Ball in LA haha!). Anyone remember when Dez Bryant came by the Rec to play pickup basketball and parked his tricked out Jag in the front, in the fire lane and just said "I'll take the ticket" when UNT 5-0 wanted him to move his car? (Shoutout to Shep and Bohannan 🚔 🚨 much love!)

I don't know if this helps, but I don't think there's a single person who considers themself a Mean Green Fan that doesn't have the upmost respect and appreciation for SL when evaluating the totality of his tenure. Nor, does any MG Fan question how much he's cared about our program and community, or that he ever gave anything less than a full and complete effort. Absolutely no one was hoping for this to happen, I think most wanted him and the team to have a winning season capped off with a bowl win, but I suppose it was not meant to be. If those were the only factors in evaluating coaches, there would be a lot less turnover across the board. To me, I think it's completely fair to say he has done more good than bad, but the business of coaching, almost always comes down to one thing, the old adage: "What have you down for me lately?" Hate to use a different sport but it's what I'm more familiar with when it comes to memory recall, but Dwayne Casey was the head coach for the Toronto Raptors in 2018 and during that season he: First Raptors Coach in history to be selected to the NBA All-Star Game Won his 300th game as the head coach for the Raptors Set franchise records for wins and total offense in a season Finished first in the Eastern Conference Named NBA Coach of the Year They lost in the second round of the playoffs that year, he was fired, the very next season under Nick Nurse, the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Championship, which was their first. In the interest of brevity, and I'm not sure how much of this was publicized at the time, but when he was an Assistant at Kentucky for Eddie Sutton, he was wrongly accused of sending money to a player (his innocence was proven conclusively) and he was told flat-out by a retiring AD that liked him and cared a lot about him, that no matter what he did, the alumni/powerful boosters at particular institutions (think blue-blood programs) would never allow a black man to become a head coach. This was in the 1980's but fast-forward 30+ years and there's been no hint of a scandal associated with him since, and he must be pretty good since he was hired almost immediately by the Detroit Pistons where he is currently the Head Coach. One argument in Toronto was, he was great but couldn't get to Finals and they felt someone else could, then 20/20 hindsight added credibility to the move. If they they didn't make it past the second round the season after he left, it would have been a different story perhaps. Personally, I think Casey got one of the most regal backdoor colonoscopies in sports history. They based it solely on: "What have you done for me lately?" After 7 straight winning seasons, with the furthest advancement in the playoffs being one trip to the Eastern Conference Finals, the answer was "Not Enough." ------- Even thought I mentioned racism in the 1980's, I don't believe and do not want to insinuate that race played a factor in his firing in Toronto, Masai Ujiri was the President/GM of the Raptors who made the decision to fire him, he is also black. Also, no one involved or with knowledge of the move has ever alleged that race played a factor in this decision. PS - Sorry for following "In the interest of brevity" with the antithesis of and compete devoid of, brevity (I'm working on it lol)

HELL YEAH!!!!! Love it!!! 🤣🤣.LOL - Got me fired up, let's go!!! For real though, it's about competition across the board..... people making moves..... stakes have been raised..... WB has got to be in Jerry Jones mode now: what ever the cost, no matter the price, we will never be out done, we're coming for everybody!!! We're going to step up to the plate here real soon, and we'll have our moment to get fired up about the future!!! #GMG

Yeah, I gotta think he has a specific place in mind that he wants to go to and the job isn't open yet, but could be after next year or the year after. This keeps his options open, gets the payday all coaches aspire to, and he doesn't have to make a one or two-year pit stop at Tech (if that was going to be a thing)..... Johnny Jones always said the only school he'd leave for was LSU, mad respect for that, and I think MG Nation was in full support when he did get that job. (BTW - Our own MG HOFer Josh White is an Asst. on his staff now at Texas Southern! 👀 for the future)

Reaction: A Story in Three Pictures or Less First I was like...... Then.... Now....
-
This is generalized flow chart, which is in some ways a mind map of how I view penalties in general. It can be customized and altered to either a specific penalty (Unsportsmanlike), type (live/dead ball), really how ever you wanted to use it. I needed picture books as a child to get the story, I'm one of those visual learner types 🤣🤣 Free to make at Lucid.app - gave me an excuse to try it out, pretty easy to use. ------------ With the amount off staff on DI teams, and staff that can't recruit during the off-season, you could assign GA's to go back and look at every single penalty, complete the flow chart and then compare how each penalty was handled, and identify where miscues are coming from: Who's taking accountability? Are we coaching them up consistently? Who's tracking what? Who's tracking who? What's working, what's not? Who's working out, who's not? If you do this each week and lay it out for the guys, they'll: See a consistent approach Clarify what they don't know of have misinterpreted Understand the expectations and consequences Know what they have to do to get back on the field Just by simply reviewing a chart and holding themselves accountable. I'm basing this of my belief in what Brett Brown said once when he was an assistant with the Spurs whenI asked him about team culture: "F*** Culture, it's about accountability. Not me as a coach holding a player accountable. Not a player holding another player accountable. It's every player holding themselves accountable. You can't do anything special in this league until you have each person in the organization holding themselves accountable." So this, for me, would serve to get a team to that point where everyone, players to ballboys, coaches to bus drivers, are holding themselves accountable. A tall task for sure, all the worthwhile ones are, but I definitely believe it's a necessity to building a championship team (regardless of sport or business). It should also be clear at this point in the season how the staff handles penalties, I don't think it is clear because I don't think they've been consistent, clearly it hasn't gone well - this would be where the staff should be held to account IMO. Edit: For me, I would use it for specific penalties, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, for example, so it's put together for use with specific penalties in mind (offsides, false start, etc....).

I think we saw the same interview..... I feel for the dude, he spent a huge part of his life resurrecting TCU Football and now he's got to compete with booster $$ and endorsement deals, the goal posts got moved on everyone with the NIL stuff. I saw group supporting UT, calling themselves "Burnt Ends" and they're planning on allotting $15k every year for each tight end on the roster with an eye to funding 4-6 of them, paying for appearances, interviews, who the hell knows what else. The NIL war in college football will simply come down to $$$, either you have it or you don't. There will be a list of top endorsement deals by player and by team, that'll become one of the top, if not, the top metric players will base their decisions on in the future and it's a simple numbers game. College athletics has been reduced to where can players make the most money, playing opportunity and development next, academics more than likely won't factor in (of-course they'll repeat the talking point in some form: ".......they've got great academics as well, so it's a no brainer."). Make no mistake, folks like TIm Fertitta in Houston will be in a position to say, "My companies are paying a million dollars a year in endorsement deals across UH athletics, fire this coach, hire this guy" and what's an AD to do? Balk and the money stops and the recruits go elsewhere, the coaches get pissed, AD gets fired, and that big booster becomes the Jerry Jones of their program. Great if you got it, kind of over for you in many ways if you don't.
