Who says we want anyone on the coaching staff besides our current Running Backs Coach? If we could wash our hands of their contracts budget wise and these nice guys would still be made whole, financially give me a Barney Fife vote if you would get rid of them right now. I think chances are very small that Eric Morris and company hit on a 3rd good quarterback in a roll. And I am skeptical they know how to recruit and develop a top 75 in FBS Defense (or just upper half of AAC). I say you could find something productive for Lance to do for our program.

Interesting but I believe one of the driving factors ruining College Football. The NFL is one TV product broken up in pieces for multimedia distribution. College Football operates like the individual teams are the TV product and not the actual games. Texas vs Citadel is a horrible TV product but distributers pay full freight for the game like it is any other game. Sure there are stinker games in the NFL. Guaranteed Kentucky isn't the driving force behind their viewership numbers.

Legally you can do that without collective bargaining. My hope is that we go to a collective bargained system were incoming freshman are only eligible to receive full scholarships with a cost of attendance stipend that is the average for all the universities in the state the college resides in. After their freshman year they are eligible to transfer but two year contracts are available to them at that time. So you can transfer get another one year athletic scholarship with stipend or get a two year binding contract. Only medical redshirts are available for under contract players. And their contracts can be extended for a third year on the year but the university is only obligated to at least give them full scholarship on the back end of a contract impacted by a medical redshirt year. Once you transfer at the end of a contract you have to have 2 years of eligibility left to match the contract. So a senior with 2 years of eligibility left cannot be released to be a "free agent" graduate student athlete under contract. Either they payback the value of the remaining contract or they can be released at the discretion of the university. I would go on with a few more minor details for graduate situations but already find this tedious. Thank you GREEDY FBS MAFIA. 😂

Loved everything about your post but I wanted to highlight this section. I believe a lot of the fans on this board want to stick their heads in the sand and minimize the absurd mismanagement of the football program the last 20 years. We have a ton of alumni locally that could be won over. But the decisions made are insulting to the intelligence of people who casually pay attention when the program makes a big move. I harp on Odus Mitchell because his tenure shows dramatically what can be done with hard work and competence. And it is totally incompetent for program with upwardly mobile aspirations to hire first time FBS level coaches. And what is worse when we do hire a FCS head coach they don't hire the best one available. Dodge, Littrell, and Morris were bad hires. They may have been fine when it comes to the X & O of their sides of the ball. We need marketer, Adminstrator and culture builder. They selected the coaches I mentioned like a good functional Air Raid Offense would fix everything. I attended at least 3 home game a year since the last couple of season at Fouts Field and the game atmosphere more dead now than ever in my opinion. You can just feel the disappointment in fans. There is no structural disadvantage here that prevents North Texas from being on par with programs like Louisville, Memphis, Tulane, UNLV, San Diego State, UCF, SMU or USF.

For sure, we dropped down to FCS when the SWC made it clear they had NO interest in adding us. There is even a clip of a North Texas game during the period I am thinking about where the commentators are mentioning Big 8 consideration. By the early 90s when Arkansas left it was assumed the SWC was going to die and/or jettison TCU, Baylor, Rice, Houston, SMU and add higher profile programs. Big 8 decided to add the teams UT Austin and Texas A&M approved of. And stories say Governor Ann Richards made sure that Baylor didn’t get left out. Otherwise I think it is common belief that Houston would not have gotten left out. I don’t believe even Texas Tech felt like they were completely safe from being an orphan program. Although I welcome people familiar with Texas Tech history to correct me if I am wrong about that. -
Yeah but it might be too late for that. The media revenue generated by the bowls outside of the CFP have never been lower. Now if they are getting a piece of the CFP money that might be a different story. I just don’t see how the lesser bowl games make financial sense looking at the attendance. Some of them will still remain somewhat important for their region but I pretty sure the “Plug in Large City’s Name Here” Chamber of Commerce will bend over backward get an event with less than 25k in attendance. (sarcasm if it wasn't clear) Makes me wonder if a multi-use indoor venue capable of seating 35k for a football game near Winstar or Choctaw casino would be worth the investment to steal a “Servpro Level” Bowl.

I am in utter shock by Bill going to UNC. We aren’t in the same financial stratosphere with UNC but it still just makes me look at our program’s move as lack luster even for the level we are at. I think you need to research that. I highly doubt that was more than a made up rumor. If this is true and I get confirmation that we didn’t try to move heaven and earth to get Barry I am really done actively supporting this program. Maybe this connected to the time the Big 8 (Big 12 now) was considering us. And his interest was exclusively dependent on us getting added to that conference. But hey let’s get UNC on the schedule ASAP. Two-for-one or a home and home, I don’t care. I think it would be comical for a top 10 ranked undefeated UNC team led by a coach Jerry couldn’t work with making local headlines for a game in Denton. Maybe our first sellout if we are any good. 😂 -
I think that is a short sighted solution to minor temporary problem. My educated speculation is that financially the current bowl system isn’t sustainable long term. The lessor bowls without bigger brands in them aren’t a good TV product. And even watered down version of the bigger brand teams in are Not much better TV products. I don’t know when or where these other bowls games will be played so it is likely I will miss them on TV. I don’t think my perspective as a College Football fan varies that much from the average fan when it comes to bowl games in 2024. G5 is going to establish some kind of “NIT” alternative for teams left out of the CFP. Or bowl games featuring G5 teams 7-5 and below (who aren’t 3rd place or conference championship losers) are going to go away. So until that happens it is foolish to craft your team to make sure you retain players for your mediocre bowl games that will likely draw far less than the best home game on when people are still dreaming of bigger accomplishments. Being in a bowl game is no longer a good measuring stick of your program’s success. It literally means you are average. Recruits aren’t changing their opinion of a program based on a bowl appearance.
-
I agree with this. I much prefer establishing a tradition of the opening game of the season be against them(first verses FBS level team if we open against FCS). Why be concerned with what a deluded version of an underwhelming 6-6 Mean Green team does against a watered down version of any 7-5 or 6-6 G5 team? No, we need to pick one. Establish a scheduling tradition with them and ignore the others.
-
Is that amount confirmed by any reputable source?
-
Just more evidence that Eric Morris and company DON’T understand how to build a roster in G5 in the transfer portal era. Looking at his bio it appears he put on at least 25 lbs since high school. And now with that added weight, the speed/quickness that was good enough for high school has slightly decreased to where he can’t break into the starting rotation.
-
They only opened very deep pocket books. 🙄. And after June Jones fizzled out they had to recalibrate build their funds up again. Then they spent even more money smartly. I agree we could be doing much better. But you can’t look at our coaching hires besides Mac and say they seriously were trying anything dramatic. And they should have let Seth Littrell walk when he flirted with KSU. We are the only program in the country that has let a coach with no bowl wins, wins over top 25, or conference championship negotiate like he has accomplished something significant.
-
That is ridiculous negative speculation that he wouldn’t be successful here. Because with Travis Hunter and Sanders there is no way they win less than 8 games with our weak schedules. He would have arrived here without having to overturn the roster just to be competitive. Seeing what he did at Colorado his FIRST year taking over a team one win the previous season. Colorado easily could have been 6-6 if they won just 2 of the one possession games they lost. Now if you are talking about going to the CFP in his first or second year, I might agree. As far as him not even taking a meeting with UNT brass if they had put 3.8 million on the table as the starting point for negotiating a salary, I doubt he disrespects the opportunity outright. If anything he would use it to make negotiations for the incentives he received from Colorado easier. But since you an expert at what the Mean Green can’t do, why are you here @DentonStang? 🙄
-
I stand corrected but I don’t count “co-championships”. But, I lived in Denton and I don’t remember any significant press coverage. Great we won exactly one conference championship out right our last year at that level with 7 wins. Inspiring 🙄😂
-
Yes that is why I have decided that I watch sparingly as the program flounders and goes to some level below FBS.
-
Maybe they should start giving player generous bowl bonuses like they give coaches. 🤣 I still find the outage and pearl clutching of player being mercenaries like EVERYONE ELSE making far more money from college football than the players comically hypocritical. The greed of everyone else broke college football a LONG TIME ago. The player are just now getting somewhat of a fair share and freedom of movement like EVERYONE ELSE. I have a proposal that will go NO WHERE. How about all the coaches salaries get rolled back to like they are coaching one of 130 amateur teams? Everyone Coach, AD, conference commissioner makes below 500k. Then we go back to players only getting scholarships and living cost of attendance stipends. You know that will NEVER happen and we all know why. So stop blaming the players for the system they did not create.
-
NTSU did this in 1982 and subsequently never won a single playoff game or conference title their entire time at that level. This program squandered what Odus Mitchell built.

Just excuses are all I see. This program half ass tries then some of us make excuses for the half ass attempts. The ONLY coach hire I didn't immediately question since Dickey was fired was Coach Mac. This mediocre second season was predictable as washing your car when there is a 20% chance of rain the next day and getting it rained on. They hired a Seth clone who made a short stop at FCS. 🙄 Hell they could've tired money whipping Traylor into coming to North Texas. The publicity and extra spice to the rivalry even if he turned us down would have been a positive. It isn't about Denton. Nobody is invested into a program that refuses to swing big. You talk about San Antonio like it is some College Football Nirvana. Well tell me about Tampa? USF is in Tampa. They have a football team and they since starting football in 1997 and FBS level in 2001 have complied 11 bowl appearances, 7 wins. They have also beat several top 25 ranked teams during that period. But UNT brings back mediocre coaches with NOTHING in the trophy case for a 7th and lame duck year everybody saw a mile away then follow that up with allowing a first time FBS level coach to retain the worse DC in all of college football and it is "Denton's Culture" at fault for not supporting it. That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I grew up in Denton before returning from the Army to go to school at UNT. I was surprised that we had ever played Division I (Now FBS) football because since my birth they have been a mediocre FCS team that nobody had a reason to talk about. Mean Green Football has beaten down any support it may have had before its time in FCS (I-AA) with all the losing. Not just losing but embarrassing blowouts whenever we get the chance against traditional power from the state of Texas even lowly SMU when they are decent. There are local media personalities at all the radio and TV networks in DFW that would love an opportunity to brag on UNT Football and they RARELY give them one. So this Denton native who know what a shitty program this has been for most of past +40 years is disappointed on behave of all Denton natives.
-
Yep, I get nothing not even a ticket to the game or a tax credit. But if you tell me we are trying to hire Coach Sanders and he is bringing his son, Travis Hunter, and other 4 stars with him get me on $150 per month payment plan. The Adminstration had the opportunity to at least SAY we want to play the game by not using a weather aided victory over UTSA make us retain mediocre coach (now unemployed AGAIN "offensive genius" who could only figure out how to get ONE QB in 7 years to play well) and pursue big fish coaches like Sanders. We said NO and hired Seth 2.0.
-
And it seems like most of the leadership and fans have learned nothing from that period. I still can't explain with any solid logic to my DFW area friends why our program didn't at least publicly pursuit Coach Sanders and fire Seth Littrell a season earlier than we did. The last decade in college football was just as a dramatic inflection point as the end of the College Football Alliance. And we needed to do something dramatic and attention grabbing more than a fake out punt return. It seems we have no desire to do anything dramatic. You don't followup Mac with Littrell with any respect to maintaining or growing any credibility beyond what the improving the facilities did. And those facility improvements came late.
-
I think most with significant winning history will likely drop down to FCS or even Division II rather than shutdown completely. Hell if we could get 90% of the following teams: UTSA, Texas State, La Tech, Tulane, Rice, Texas State, Sam Houston, Tulsa, UTEP, Arkansa State, Louisiana (ULL), ULM in our FCS conference I might even prefer that.
-
Nope, you can't do that if the programs don't have any "business guardrails". And college football elite have shown, they have no interest in fair business practices unless a lawsuit forces them to. When everybody but the players started making more than all the Academic Department heads nobody cried it was unfair. Now the only "guardrail" that will be available for revenue sports will be making the scholarship players employees like graduate student teachers assistants. They will probably have 2 year contract and their tuition will be part of their compensation package. I think the average coach's salary will likely decrease. College Football Mafia is NOT interested in LEVELING the playing field. So whatever happens it is going to be an utter mess and still not very good for college sports. They want still reserve the advantage of being able to money whip players into transferring away from a "poorer school" to a "richer one". If players got big bonuses (just like the coaches) for playing in and wining bowl games maybe not nearly as many would sit out.
-
Yep, there are many solutions to this "made up" problem. But the real problem is you can NEVER satisfy the GREED of the rich. Nobody 30 years ago was complaining that we needed 14, 16, or 18 member conferences to insure we had quality games on TV. But I do remember that we did complain that the richest programs in the sport scheduled FCS and barely functioning G5 level FBS to get two extra home games every year. It boils down to they want to SAY they are better than all the other conferences WITHOUT PLAYING them. It is garbage and has always been garbage. Now with these super conferences they have reduced the data points we have IN CONFERENCE to reduce argument that a team that didn't even participate in their conference championship game might actually be the best team in the conference. Miami did not even play Clemson nor SMU this year. Is it crazy that to believe that 2 loss team in the same conference with a 3 loss team is actually better? The college presidents could get together with the media distributers tomorrow and fix college athletics for the long term benefit of the sport but they won't and it is just as easy as this. 1. No Conferences greater than 12 FBS teams 2. Games against FCS can be played but not counted in your record 3. Only true home and home contracts can be signed for FBS vs FBS competition 4. Strength of best out of conference victory is included as the 3rd tiebreaker in conference standings 5. The media money will be distributed in a negotiated settlement pro-rated by the average annual payout the teams would have received with their old super conference payout till 2030. At the end of 2030 season all media contracts are void and the new 12 FBS team max conferences can negotiate new contracts. TV Distribution payout for non-conference games belong to the home team exclusively and not shared with their conference. The can sign side deal splitting the TV money for the out of conference FBS games 50/50 or some variation as long as the home team gets 50% of the gross. 6. Go to 6 bowl winner playoff after all traditional bowls are restored to the period between December 30 - Jan 3. Team 1 & 2 automatically in the semi final. Sixth Seed at Third Seed (or suitable alternate venue third seed chooses. In my delusional dream that would be 4th seeded bowl winner Mean Green AT&T or renovated Cotton Bowl weather permitting for example and a 3rd seeded Boise State might choose Seattle Seahawk's stadium) To judge these conferences we versus one another we need more data points plain and simple. A system that calls Army an 11-1 team FBS but not eligible for the playoffs is subjective garbage. Army could have just as easily scheduled Vandy out of conference went undefeated and been in the CFP. CFP committee did nothing wrong but tried to make sense out of a subjective mess. These super conferences are a big greedy mess and DO NOTHING to add value to the overall product that is college football. All the blue blood programs could have kept their smaller conferences from 30-40 years ago intact added a conference championship game. They also could tweaked the conferences and kicked out dead weight like Rice, Temple, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Northwestern and SMU. College Football is like boxing in all the worse ways except boxers PAYING to duck other fighter who actually wanted to fight them because they thought they could beat them. SMU kiss the ring and paid the College Football Mafia to get a legit shot at the title. Meanwhile that same Mafia wants us to look the other way while they murdered the SWC, Pac 12, and made several attempts to murder the Big 12. 🙄 I wonder if Alabama would give SMU all their FBS 2024 SEC money and CFP money share to take SMU's place in the playoff? Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Bama go bury your heads in money pillows as cry all you want. I for one hope SMU boat races perpetually over rated Pedo-Protectors Penn State by 47. I don't like SMU but I appreciate Karma!

It is just plain stupid to radically change your uniforms every week when you have as close to ZERO as possible athletic brand recognition with as much history as we have. We do a horrible job marketing that history and our historical uniforms. What is worse at lot of the uniforms are just plain ugly and the ones everyone seems to love (like the icy whites) are rarely repeated. So whenever we do have a signature win it likely that the next time we are on TV to reinforce that positive perception we are in uniforms so different that people may not recognize us. And can we stop with the inserting black as much as possible in all the uniforms and helmets? I think it is cool to wear black for home night games or home games played within 48 hours before Halloween.

Beat them and win a dang conference at least once a decade then we can whine. 🙄
