  1. I was surprised....and disappointed.....to see Texas run the fake punt on fourth down. I thought it showed a lack of class to do that when your team was clearly better than your opponent and there was no chance of your losing the game. This was balanced our, though, in the fourth quarter when Texas just ran the ball inside when they could easily have scored again. I guess those things balance out. Mack Brown was very complimentary of North Texas in his quotes after the game. He indicated that this was a much better North Texas team than Texas had played two years ago. I sure hope he is right.
  2. I think it is funny that our buddies at TCU were placed in the same category as Oregon - really ugly........
  3. I am sure that others would join Rick in kicking in to help any funding that needs to take place to help things out, Harry. Your efforts are remarkable and lots of folks appreciate it. Just put the word out. I think there will be no problem with any financial help that you might need.
  4. I'm sure that I am not the only one who has figured this out, but IF Bomar comes to North Texas (a very big IF) and IF the NCAA allows him to play in 2007 (another very big IF) his first game back would be in Norman, Oklahoma against OU. Now THAT would be interesting.
  5. The thing that concerns me about these predictions are that they are often very close to being right. For the ten year period prior to last year they hit our won/lost record right on the nose six times and were pretty darned close some other years. Boy, I hope they missed on this one, but it bothers me to see it from this group.
  6. My best recollection is that he was offered the North Texas job when he was offensive coordinator at Texas A&M but turned it down. The phrase "offered the job" may be a little too strong but he made it clear that he felt like he had a better job as offensive coordinator for the Aggies than he would have as head coach for the Mean Green. He might have been right.....
  7. You might also consider who the players are being asked to block. Offensive guards are often matched up against defensive tackles while offensive tackles are often matched up against defensive ends. Defensive tackles tend to be bigger, and perhaps a little slowerr. The defensive ends tend to be faster and put on a speed rush when rushing the passer. Offensive tackles need to be a little quicker to block those guys. That certainly might not be the only reason that things have changed, but it might be one of them.
  8. Our local school district just negotiated fuel prices for the 2006-07 school year. They could not get a firm price from any supplier. The best they could get was eight cents per gallon above the cost of the supplier's cost. It could go up a lot if fuel prices continue to rise. Those nice folks at La Tech could curb their fuel costs very easily. The Sun Belt Conference would be a lot closer than the WAC. I hate to wish bad things on anyone, but if the cost of fuel causes them to come into the Sun Belt, it would not be all bad for them or for the Sun Belt Conference.
  9. This is great news for FIU and for the schools that play them. We went to the North Texas Vs FIU game last year. There is not a single school in Divion One that needs a new stadium more than these guys. I am happy for them.
  10. When I visited with Bobby Ray in November he was very firm that there would be no retreat from the attempts that have been made to bring our athletic program up a few notches. Before we sell this lady down the river, lets remember that the Board of Regents signs the paycheck of the University President and gives direction to him/her. Having said that, I think it is going to be tough to find anyone who has done as much for our athletic program as Dr. Pohl. I would not want to be the person following him.
  11. I spoke to Hank one day last week. He said that he was the first person to be interviewed for the Corpus Christi job. He said that before anything happened he would have to get his wife to go there with him to look over the situation. He did not mention anything about radio for this year.
  12. There were a pair of those buildings at one time. They sat side by side on Avenue A. The other one was known as the "Old Science Building" in the Fall of 1960. It was where I attended my first college class. The Physical Education department and coaches offices were housed there. That was the last semester that it was used as a classroom building. It was later torn down. It sat on the corner of Avenue A and Hickory Street. My first college class was PE 190. It was a required Health class that all us dumb old PE majors had to take. It was taught by Ken Bahnsen. He was also the Freshman football coach in those days. For some reason known only to God, the school started on Friday in those years. Our first class met at 8:00 AM that first Friday morning. Coach Bahnsen came in and checked roll then said "Guys, we have a football game tomorrow night and we are busy as Hell. I will see you on Monday." He then turned around and left. I said to myself "Boy, you are going to like it here." One hour later I went to English 131. I don't think that gentleman knew there was a football game the next night. My life changed really quickly that morning.
  13. I hope they are successful in their lawsuit. The NCAA stepped over the line with this issue.
  14. Oh, my goodness....... The loss of Hank Dickenson would be a huge one. It would not be like losing Norval Pohl, but boy it woud hurt. He is a good guy and a tramendous asset to our program. I hope Rick V has enough sense to scrape together a compensation package that makes it really hard for Hank to leave us.
  15. He is the only North Texas president that I have ever seen attend a football scrimmage prior to the start of the season. We are going to miss this man more than some of us can imagine.
  16. We probably could not get the Longhorns to come to Denton since they have an annual game in Dallas, but it would sure give us a chance to get some other teams that would be very attractive. Since there is not a new stadium in our near future I guess it is a moot point.
  17. Dr. Pohl is the best thing that has happened to North Texas in a very long time. We will miss him a LOT.
  18. I'm an old Childress Bobcat......Class of 1960 I am trying to think of anything noteworthy to mention. I guess the closest any other Bobcat came to fame was David Seals. David did a little time in the big house for rustling cattle. The third night in a row that he backed his cattle truck up the the same spot in the same rancher's pasture to "borrow" a few head of cattle he was captured. Now that takes guts - or no brain.
  19. Arkstfan, I remember that 1AA finalist team you guys had. They came to Denton and kicked the snot our of us. If I remember right they were a no huddle wishbone offense. I think the turning point in that game was when your team made it to the bus for the trip to Denton. Let's see if my old memory is still intact. Wasn't Larry Lacewell the coach then? Did you guys lose to George Southern at their place in the finals? That has been a day or two ago so my memory may have clouded over, but I still remember that as a darned good football team.
  20. Since NASCAR is in town this weekend I will compare the move from 1AA to 1A as moving from the Busch series to the Cup series. It is a whole different game. Having said that, I wish them well. I would welcome them to the Sun Belt. It would give us nine football playing schools and make for 4 home and 4 road games each year in conference play. I enjoyed playing them in our Southland Conference days. It is a nice road trip that lots of our fans could make.
  21. My first North Texas game at Fouts came in about 1955 when my dad officiated a game there. Fouts was pretty new then. My first game as a student came in September of 1960. I have no idea who we played. It was the year after the Sun Bowl team. I remember everyone saying that the team was sure better the previous year. They were right.
  22. That is a nice looking stadium BUT look at how many of those seats are in the end zones. It reminds me of the old Arlington Stadium where the Rangers used to play. A lot of their seats were in the outfield with a smaller number of good seats between the foul poles. It looks like this stadium will be similar.
  23. There's a funny story about Hayden Fry wanting to change our name to Texas State. Some smart ass suggested that instead of changing the name of the school that Hayden change his name to Knute Rockne since every coach in America would like to have a chance to beat Knute Rockne. Hayden did not think it was very funny.
  24. Harry, I can take care of $100 of the cost if you will PROMISE to not tell my wife about it. I will send the money to Eric in Frisco.
  25. Anyone who does not believe that success in athletics leads to an overall improvement in the university only need to talk to the folks at the Admissions office at TCU. When LaDamian Tomlinson and the Horned Frogs had their 10-1 season about five years ago their admissions staff said that not only did the number of admission applications go up but the quality of those applicants went up, too. GreyEagleOne is right, though. Publishing it in the faculty newsletter would do little to help. Once folks have made up their minds about an issue. facts only tend to make them more convinced than ever that they are being mistreated.
