Most NCAA Power 5 colleges plan to reopen
C Rod replied to meangreen11's topic in Mean Green Football
“The University of Michigan won’t have a football season this fall unless all students are able to be back on campus for classes. And, according to President Mark Schlissel, that isn’t a sure thing.” “Dr. Schlissel’s measured approach strikes a different tone than the rosy predictions made by many of his peers, both within the Big Ten athletic conference and across the country at major research institutions.“ https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/university-of-michigan-president-takes-measured-approach-on-reopening-11590321600 -

We should know more about the state of CUSA after this week. I can’t see the insurance companies agreeing to pay claims for unplayed “buy” games across the entire NCAA. I have a feeling CUSA and Sunbelt are going to be in a world of hurt. https://www.herald-dispatch.com/sports/conference-usa-spring-meetings-taking-place-virtually-this-week/article_c786f078-a71d-5d7f-91cc-74cf929e8525.html

This is a false equivalency. We're dealing with a once in a century pandemic, with a novel virus, which we have no vaccine for.

Cramming tens of thousands of people together, in an enclosed arena, during a pandemic is a bad idea. To do it repeatedly is an even worse idea. Every game potentially becomes a virus hotspot with thousands of a super spreaders taking COVID home to their families on a nightly basis. I can't see the NBA willing to that risk with their players, fans, & brand.

Did you catch this part towards the end of the article? My good friend is a diehard Texas Tech fan and his wife is a successful corporate litigation lawyer. Before the conference tourneys and March Madness were canceled, she actually predicted it in February and brought him to tears by breaking down the numerous liability issues of student athletes playing sports during this pandemic. Think about it. A personal injury lawyer could easily argue that the NCAA, P5/G5 conferences, and universities are legally liable should student athletes become sick and die from COVID-19. A devastating legal argument could be made that these organizations knowingly risked the lives of their student athletes in pursuit of financial gain and even the coaches with their million dollar salaries could be swamped with lawsuits. Lawyers for the NCAA and universities fully understand the magnitude of this risk and their blessing will ultimately be needed before student athletes are allowed to take the field again. The lack of compensation for student athletes becomes an even messier issue during the pandemic. Student athletes (especially ones who are immunocompromised) would now be risking their lives to play sports without compensation or hazard pay. Not a good look when the universities, coaches, sponsors, and NCAA rake in the millions of dollars per business as usual. One last point, if student athletes get sick and die, this instantly becomes an absolute PR nightmare and sponsors will jump ship en masse. ADs and university presidents would be held responsible and heads would roll. So let me ask the board, how do you predict the risk-adverse attorneys will advise their clients?

BREAKING: Boise State furloughs coaching staff
C Rod replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Exactly. I will take it a step further and say COVID will alter the G5 conference landscape also. I have a feeling some of the CUSA and Sunbelt schools will opt to drop down to FCS to save costs. CUSA and Sunbelt will either need to trim-the-fat and merge or swap schools to create regional conferences. The travel costs for all sports is unsustainable. I did a quick Google search to see if anyone had written on this recently and found this article: https://championinsiders.com/college-football/the-g5-is-facing-major-economic-woes/ -
Look at it this way, we signed a talented WR who now, thanks to Ole Miss, has a massive chip on his shoulder. I see this as a win-win for both parties. Welcome to the Mean Green, Detraveon. We're thrilled to have you.

Anyone else notice how tired our video boards are looking these days? Surely Wren & Co. have taken notice and can't be happy with this busted look either. (Photo was taken at the UAB game on 11/30/19) I rewatched the Master Plan video and it shows 4 videos boards in the corners of Apogee. Looking forward to the much needed upgrade. Let's make it happen ASAP.

Vito gets it.

Lane offering Renfro could be a sign Briles will be the new OC for Ole Miss.

Judy's reality distortion field is 2nd only to the late Steve Jobs. With the sad fan turnout and paltry TV ratings, I bet G. Brint Ryan would love to have his Ryan sponsorship check back. Hate to say it but he got duped by Judy.

Brett Vito made the same claims as Matthew Brune in his Dec 2nd article in the Denton Record Chronicle. https://dentonrc.com/sports/where-unt-goes-from-here-after-the-departure-of-reeder/article_a2c1049c-3acf-545d-a507-02d7c1cd29ff.html Vito on Seth & Harrell mutually parting ways: Vito on Seth's play calling:

I'm a big fan of Mangino. Who can ever forget the '07 Jayhawks going 12-1 and winning the Orange Bowl. What I would give for UNT to have that kind of season. Bret Vito reported today that Mark was at the UAB game on Saturday night. I guess you could always say he was there to support Seth and his son, but I suspect there's more to the story.

Dez Forrest is a dynamite running back built in small package (listed at 5 '7). He just wrapped up his Junior year at Weatherford HS and put up big numbers. He's a natural leader who plays with a chip on his shoulder and is vocal in and out of the huddle. I watched as he transferred in from Arlington and immediately the team rallied behind him. I had a close look at Dez all season because I've been filming Weatherford QB Ken Seals for the past two years. The Weatherford offense exploded this year with the addition of Forrest and the running game allowed Ken to thrive and put up record numbers. Dez is fast and elusive. There were so many times I would watch Dez break defender's ankles and take it 60+ yds to the house. He had a 9TD game to kickoff the season against Granbury and never looked back. If you scrub to the 1:14 mark in the video below, you'll see Dez catch a screen pass from Ken and take it 82 yds for the game-winning, go-ahead score. https://twitter.com/TheCRodriguez/status/1194068246854557696?s=20

Matthew Brune is a current student at UNT and covers UNT games, HS football games for the DRC, and writes for https://247sports.com/college/north-texas/. He's around the team often and provides an inside look. I'm a regular listener of his Brune's Breakdown Podcast and it's definitely worth a listen for all UNT fans. Let's not trash UNT content creators because in reality we need more of them if we want to grow our student fan base and sell out Apogee.
