  1. DENTON, Texas – Assistant coach Sean Brophy has added the title of Passing Game Coordinator, UNT head football coach Eric Morris announced Tuesday. Brophy has served as the quarterbacks coach for each of the last two seasons with the Mean Green under Morris. Under Brophy’s guidance, the North Texas passing offense has ranked 12th and fourth in FBS, respectively, in 2023 and 2024. Brophy has coached a pair of UNT quarterbacks who have thrown for over 3,000 yards while finishing inside the top 10 in FBS in passing touchdowns in each of his first two seasons with the Mean Green. In his two seasons in Denton, the UNT offense has racked up 7,923 passing yards, the second-most of any two-year period in program history. In addition, the 2024 offense finished with 4,267 passing yards, the most in program history. Brophy developed former walk-on quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who arrived at North Texas in the summer of 2024. Mestemaker made his first career start in the 2025 SERVPRO First Responder Bowl against Texas State and set a UNT record for most passing yards in a bowl game with 393 while posting 448 yards of total offense, tied for the most of any FBS player in the 2024-25 bowl cycle. In 2024, Brophy helped lead the Mean Green to the fourth-best passing offense in the country. UNT averaged 328.2 passing yards per game, shattering the UNT record of 306.8 ypg set in 2018 while also throwing 33 touchdown passes on the year, tied for the second-most in a single season in school history. Brophy helped the 2023 Mean Green finish No. 12 in the country in passing offense averaging 304.7 ypg. Mean Green quarterbacks posted a 33:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 147.30 passing efficiency rating on the season. In total, the UNT passing offense ranked inside the top five in program history in passing yards, passing yards per game, completions and touchdowns. Prior to arriving in Denton, Brophy spent the 2022 as a graduate assistant at Washington State under Morris assisting with the quarterbacks. During the 2021 season, his first in the coaching ranks, he served as an assistant wide receivers and quarterbacks coach at his alma mater, the University of Incarnate Word, under Morris and UNT offensive coordinator Jordan Davis. In 2021, the Cardinals posted a 10-3 record, reached the FCS Playoffs for the second time in four seasons; while assisting in the development of current Cougar quarterback Cameron Ward, he threw for 4,648 yards and 47 touchdowns on the season. Brophy was a three-year quarterback at UIW after transferring from Glendale Community College prior to the 2017 season. At UIW, he played for Morris for his final two seasons, helping the Cardinals to a Southland Conference title in 2018. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Brophy graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English (2018) and a Master of Business Administration (2019).
