DENTON, Texas — The UNT women’s basketball team earned its first victory in a national postseason tournament since 2019 with a 78-67 win over UT Arlington Monday night inside The Super Pit.
The Mean Green improved to 25-8 on the season, adding onto the program record for wins in a season. It was also the 16th win in The Super Pit this season and 11th straight home win, which ties the third-longest home winning streak in program history.
UNT was able to overcome a slow start behind a balanced offensive attack and aggressive defense that forced 25 turnovers.
“It’s a blessing that we get to play this time of the year,” head coach Jason Burton said. “It’s another opportunity to play with that special group of women. We came out a little rusty, which is expected when you don’t play for two weeks. The response we had in the second quarter and the contributions from across the board was incredible.”
Kyla Deck led North Texas with 15 points, with 10 of those coming in the second quarter alone. The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game as UNT outscored UTA, 31-11, and had a 20-0 run during the period.
The stretch began with an and-one play from Shadasia Brackens combined with a technical foul on UTA’s Zoe Nelson. The Mean Green quickly poured it on in the quarter to take a 46-27 lead into halftime. UNT’s 46 points tied the highest-scoring first half for the team this season.
Brackens finished with 12 points and nine rebounds on the night as she nearly captured her first career double double. Desiree Wooten and Ereauna Hardaway added 13 points apiece, while Tommisha Lampkin scored 12 in the win.
The Lady Mavs went on a run of their own in the third quarter, cutting UNT’s lead to 62-57 heading into the fourth. However, an Achilles heel from the conference tournament was a strength for the Mean Green Monday night as they knocked down 27-of-32 attempts from the free throw line, including 10-of-11 in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
Monday’s win marked the first WNIT victory in four attempts for the North Texas program. The Mean Green will head to Troy for their Super 16 matchup on Thursday, March 27 at 6 p.m. CT.
