  1. Tackling is about will and desire. An old coach told me several years ago, "He either will or he won't, and if he won't we have to find the ones who will."
  2. This just isn't true. A play there and a play there, it is. Generally, we were not in alignment position to make plays. It's as if the DC was playing roulette with his own box. And the linebacker tech, whew, real bad.
  3. Shouldn't have had to wait until Spring. I'm sure the moment he was hired he was watching game film with a roster in hand. He knew the personnel before he even knew the personnel.
  4. That is 100% about the student we attract then allow in. That has to be fixed. Too many commuters, too many liberal arts. Too many anime type people. We are not vetting our students based on their full profile. This is why colleges used to want to see HS involvement on college applications: Sports, languages, student council, FFA, Band, etc etc. Be a part of everything that interests you. Just observing our students, its certainly not like that at UNT. And it hasn't been for some time, if ever.
  5. I don't think it matters what people think or want, and UNT has made that clear with their actions and inaction over the decades. So, if we can steer the athletic department in the best economic direction it will pay huge dividends. I'm telling you, this is going to start to happen more and more with other programs that will be eaten alive by pay for play college athletics. I truly think that is inevitable considering the landscape. We can get ahead of it with our current success on the court and be a destination place before everyone else catches on and takes action. But like any executives in any industry, they will not do it until they think it's their idea. That's the tricky part.
  6. Yes. But I have 3 words for you: Basketball. Basketball. Basketball.
  7. Oh, wow. I did not realize that about LB. Watching our LBs, it's evident.
  8. I think they boasted the donation on a TV timeout on the field as a donation.
  9. Probably datcu donating 500k.
  10. I broke down the 3-3-5 vs Cal by possession. I then deleted it. No one wants to read all that crap. I will say, they lived in 11 personnel a lot early. We showed them advantageous box after advantageous box. They started to get into 12 personnel as the game went on. Example: My TV screen right now is paused on 1st and 10. They are in 12 personnel (1 running back, 2 TE's). We are showing them a 5 man box. And it's hardly a 5 man box. Both linebackers and kipped so far out it could be argued it's a 4-man box. We have 5 players standing at 9 to 11 yards from the LOS. 12 personnel implies 2 lined up WR's. Over and over again we are showing heavier boxes in passing D&D (down and distance) than we are on 1st and 10 and 2nd and long. I just don't get that. Yes, there were many missed tackles. But so many of them were after the running back had the ball in his hands for 8 or 9 yards and 5 yards passed the LOS. And these are DB's missing tackles in open space vs a player that is physically bigger and stronger than all of them and often at terrible angles because they're having to track down 9 to 15 yards to makes these plays. Another thing that is blowing my mind a little bit.... I have seen way too many LB's (and they've all done it, starters and depth) take drop step reads on block down action. By the time they recover they have OL giving them the business. It's head scratching. Mazin Richards is playing horribly out of position. He has zero shot. He is being asked to play a position at least 40 pounds underweight. He's getting the living dog piss blocked down on by people 60 to 80 pounds heavier than him and sometimes with TE help. They pop him outside on the rare occasion, which is where he needs to live. But then we'd be living in that pesky 4 man front. Defensive bright spots: Though our DB's didn't play especially well, I think they are talented. I really like #8 John Davis. And I think #0 Phil HIll can be good for us. #32 Wesloski when he reads and triggers properly he is very good. Negatives: Stack or not, we looked terribly coached. Not only did we looked poorly coached, our defensive coaches rarely put players physically in position pre-snap by simple personnel groupings presented by the offense. Also, Cal ran the same 2 run variations over and over and over and over. There are so many specific instances that I want to just blast. Groupings, box count, gap assignment pre-snap, etc. Just over and over again. Ugh.
  11. It's not a mess in the sense that 3-9 should be acceptable. We need to hit the portal in the sense we clearly have voids in the roster, especially on defense, that was not shored up. Frankly, not even addressed while having a free agent system in place. It can be both things.
  12. There is no way they believed that. Seth was fired begrudgingly. Donors, the ones that mattered, wanted him. I think the administrators were looking for an eject strategy. I think the two parties set parameters with each other in that final year. IOW, we are a horribly ran and led athletic department.
  13. What mess? 6 bowls in 7 years is hardly a mess. There was attrition due to the coaching change. The current staff didn't replace that attrition. And I am not sure the 14 WRs and 6 athletes currently committed to us in the 24 class are going to shore up the very gigantic holes in our roster, specifically defense.
  14. Yeah. He hired people and fixed some of the terrible gameday issues the previous guy left. That's bare minimum stuff. That's literally doing his job, at surface value. How his 2 main hires perform will be how he is ultimately valued/evaluated. That other stuff matters. Those other hires matter. But that other stuff could crumble to the ground and if we start winning 9/10 football games a year and keep stacking 20+ win basketball seasons, none of that other stuff ultimately matters.
  15. I can say yes to JUCO. There are studs out there that were just too immature in HS. But they're out there. Not sure if going D2 or FCS with consistency is a sword I would want to fall on. Sure, some are out there, but in many to most cases they are there because they are meant to be there. But in this age of all things go, I would have my recruiting staff on every Sunbelt program, CUSA program and G5 and under collegiate program in Texas and states that border Texas. Then... start poachin.
  16. I'm referecing his awful football hire only having 1 data point. Mosley's other hire of relevance was basketball. The cashier at your local 7/11 would've made the same decision. Though it still is his, and he should receive full credit for it when it pans out.
  17. Lol Dereliction* I finger drag to type on my phone. But dang, that's missing the boat right there.
  18. His short-sighted tweet, and as it sits, his awful football hire. Yeah, yeah, it's 1 game. But that 1 game was absolutely terrible, and it's the only data point we have.
  19. I thought we were beyond this as a program. We are clearly a basketball school. Not sure how much more evidence needs to be laid at our feet to get it. We better start embracing that very factual notion before we're a nothing school... again.
  20. Thank you.
  21. Utsa would certainly go toe to toe in the trenches with them and I'm not sure they'd have an answer. Memphis has better OL/DL than we do and better athletes than Cal. I think they'd both highly compete with Cal, whether they beat them or not, I have no idea. Very possibly. I can't speak on ECU.
  22. As he rightfully should.
  23. Oh, perhaps. I'm sure his numbers there would be misleading to a degree... Tech was still fully engulfed in the air raid then. So, I'm sure you will see 6 or 700 pass attempts and gaudy passing numbers. Gotta have a dude at QB to do all of that and then replace your dude with anther dude.
  24. Not really. Ppg - 71st Ypg - 83rd 3rd down % - 93rd Yards per rush - 86th Yards per pass - 92nd Pass yards per game - 43rd Rush yards per game - 114th
