In hindsight, SMU and Arky wins gave us false optimism

And even on short term his first class was on par with classes 2 and 3....Actually, one was slightly better than his first class and one was worse. Recruiting up until this class has sucked. Let's put the sugar down.

Mason Plus Seth Equaled Accelerated Winning
NorthTexasWeLove replied to BillySee58's topic in Mean Green Football
It doesn't. Collapses are on coaches. All 3 conference losses we were the better team. Vs USU we were not. We are not 39 points worse than USU though. MF has a bad play caller he has to play through. But for the staff not to get creative with the run game when we had to pull Fine was a mistake. They just kept with the game plan with inexperience at QB and it resulted in an embarrassing blowout. That's on coaches. When are we going to throw in jet sweeps, outside zones, sweeps, etc. We run 2 variations of the same exact run play over and over and over. Good defenses will stonewall Jackson that bs to the tune of 2.9 ypc like yesterday. -
Final Thought On The New Mexico Bowl
NorthTexasWeLove replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree with Rick. Good event, great hospitality. I've always enjoyed Albuquerque and this was no different. Also, UNM has damn nice facilities. The Pit, their baseball complex and football stadium would all be top 1-2 in CUSA, easy. -
He has 1 good recruiting class yet to sign. We are getting pushed around by more physically imposing teams over the last 3 years because of the inability to recruit at a high level the first three classes. So we just tip our hat at this class coming in while trying to make amends for what took place yesterday, last December, this year vs Tech and UAB. When the simple and clear answer points to the first three classes. Also to note, philosophically, we're always going to be a soft, finesse team. It's no fault of SL, It's the coaching tree he is sprung from. Yesterday vs USU, or any team like a 2017 Troy or 2018 UAB, will be a bad match up for a SL coached team. That is all.

Positive things from the New Mexico bowl game
NorthTexasWeLove replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
To piggyback, met some NMSU alum that live in Albuquerque and come to this bowl every year. They took my wife and I to dinner after the game. Silver lining I suppose...free meal...to compensate the waste of money the bowl game was. -
I guess the downvoters don't think recruiting is the staffs job and they enjoy the curb stompings. Very well.

While all true...but when is enough ass whippings enough ass whippings. Year 4, 5, 6? While we can blame poor talent and recruiting classes....We just can't shrug with manila statements in we don't have the talent, because that is a burden of this staff as well. The nationally televised embarrassments have to stop.

I wasn't referring to you, at all. You are level headed into reality. But the same suspects will jump on the 'remember 2015' next year when things get weary...almost like the Alamo or something. -

I wonder if people will still talk about 2015 when we're flirting with 30 ppg on D again? 4 years removed and an entire roster transformation. Just trying to get the excuse train moving in the right direction early for some of you guys...- 27 replies

5-7 in 2012...bowl "champs" with a 9-4 season in 2013 and then the wheels fell off. For records sake same kind of seasons as SL has provided. And who's to say the wheels won't starts squeaking next year with a 4-8 or 5-7 type performance?
-
You can count 2016 UTEP (bowl elegibility) as well as what could have been division champ games in la tech/UAB. These are his 7 big games outside of SMU and he's 0-7. To be fair the 23-21 win in Ruston in 2017 that basically clinched the division was a big game as well...So, 1-7. If you count SMU, 2-9.

Is CUSA the weakest conference in Football?
NorthTexasWeLove replied to southsideguy's topic in Mean Green Football
don't think that's possible unless we sneak into bowl season 6-6 and get to play another crappy 6-6 team. SL has proven he can't beat a better team or even an equal team. He feasts on the weak and bows to the strong. Wonder if we're going to extend and bump him....let's hope not. -
This.

The Belt is better. They have a team that went 2-6 in conference and beat our "champs". Utsa 2-6 beat tx state 1-7 25-21. That's pretty even. Their top 5 outclassed our top 5. Thanks, Judy. Way to elevate us. -

We will see how even when champs NIU and UAB go head to head on Tuesday. Spoiler alert: I picked NIU in my bowl picks this year. -
Another CUSA team getting spanked in a bowl... App St 31 Mtsu 6 11 to go in 3rd

For sure. I don't care about career stats. Year over year production is what we need. I think either 5 or 17 can eventually provide said production.
-
Agreed. We run a system offense. Once an accurate QB gets his timing down and his confidence up he can produce. I will never concede that this is our peak. If it is, this is an anthill of a peak.
