Art Briles interviewing with Southern Miss
peanuts104 replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
He is not a candidate according to the university, although Jay Hopson seems to disagree: "We have met with Art Briles regarding a position with the Southern Miss football program," the school said in a statement Wednesday morning. "Following that meeting, we informed him that he is not a candidate. The university will have no further comment on this matter." - Southern Miss Pres I think. Hopson's response: "I have interviewed Art Briles for an assistant position @ Southern Miss & I believe he is a man who deserves a second chance," Hopson wrote in his statement. "He is a man that seemed sincere & humble in his interview & personally he committed no crime. He may not have acted in the proper protocol, but that should be my JOB at Southern Miss! He was interviewing for an assistant position, even though I believe he will be a Head coach at a Major Program in the near future." http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/25937562/art-briles-no-longer-candidate-offensive-coordinator-southern-mississippi-golden-eagles -
Column: Major changes coming for North Texas?
peanuts104 replied to Skipper's topic in Mean Green Football
Just some excerpts of journalistic greatness for an article that's basically a week late to the party: "Major Applewhite would be the dream hire for the Mean Green. Applewhite was fired as the head coach of the Houston Cougars..." "Another in house candidate is offensive line coach Chuck Langston. Langston has been on the Mean Green staff since 2017 and previously served as an offensive coordinator at Lamar." This all kinda fits as one big quote (and is almost 1/4 of the article) "Harrell’s departure could also hint that head coach Seth Littrell could be the next to go. Littrell nearly took the opening at Kansas State, but when reports surfaced that the Wildcats would not allow Littrell to bring his staff with him to Manhattan, Littrell stayed in Denton. I believe that Littrell will leave Denton and the Mean Green after this season when his star quarterback Mason Fine graduates and possibly enters the NFL draft. "All in all, there will be some changes to the North Texas football program. Someone will have to call the plays and guide the offense. Major Applewhite would be a huge coup for the Mean Green. "An outside hire would signal that major changes are on the horizon." -
This move angers and confuses me. I hope this wasn't because of compensation, as others have mentioned.

Fingers crossed.

Art Briles interviewing with Southern Miss

Not exactly good publicity for the conference. Edit: Not trying to throw too much shade at Southern Miss, we have our own dirty laundry right now that also does not bring good publicity to the conference. -
I know you've had trouble understanding this, but I don't disagree that the behavior was cruel and sadistic. We're talking about magnitude here. At the end of the day, what they did to a pest animal shouldn't ruin a young man's playing career and education potentially with the loss of scholarship. Further, making a sweeping generalization about a young man from one incident is extremely disingenuous, especially considering how little actual information we have about the situation or Muhammad's role in it beyond filming it. Let's give an example of another player that made a mistake. Turner Smiley is by all accounts a great young man, but if you remember, he got arrested for a DWI after the 2015 season. He made a mistake, a mistake that in my opinion is worse than posting a video of a raccoon getting mauled by dogs, but there were no cries to kick him off the team and take his scholarship, or if there were they did not reach the same national attention this BS is getting. And while we're on the topic of sadistic behavior, I find it ironic that there is so much outrage for this considering the sport of football has elements sadism in it, and that element of sadism is directed at other people, not a worthless raccoon. This is a question of does the punishment fit the crime. Should a young man's life be turned inside out just because of one mistake involving the death of a raccoon? Would you ruin a person's life just to get "justice" for a raccoon?

Whom will be #2 UNT QB coming out of Spring '19?
peanuts104 replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
I think both Bean and Martin will get garbage time next year, but I'm giving the edge to Kason with his performance in the bowl game vs Bean (though that INT wasn't Bean's fault).- 9 replies

Am I reading that right? 1 4th quarter TD?! That is a very scary and telling statistic in and of itself.

Would it have been better if he grimaced with a critical visage while watching the raccoon get killed by the dogs?

In Texas, wild animals are exempt according to the penal code. One thing I'm not clear on is it mentions that previously captured wild animals would count as domesticated, but it's unclear if they mean like a tiger you've been keeping in your house for a few years or a situation where the animal was recently trapped. Another determining factor would be if this could be justified as training the dogs to hunt and if this is a common practice for training dogs to hunt, it is an exception to the application of the law if the action is occurring solely for the purpose or in support of fishing, hunting, or trapping. If I am correct in interpreting the law, which I may not be, they would have to adequately define what previously captured means(could be existing case law on it). It would also likely be difficult for the prosecution to prove that this wasn't a hunting training exercise for the dogs. Overall, I doubt a DA would touch the case since conviction percentage is usually one of the top considerations when deciding to hear a case. https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/penal-code/penal-sect-42-092.html

The code of conduct students agree to is pretty far reaching and they usually have vague clauses pertaining to good behavior and representing the university well, etc. I'm sure they could make an argument.

And I agree, he shouldn't have posted the video. But I don't think videoing it makes him an evil person either, especially since, as you said, it's just a raccoon. Now you're getting it. Yeah, but he didn't sit there and rip the raccoon apart himself. In all likelihood, he didn't even sick the dogs on it. He just filmed it.

This. I hate my generation, mainly for this.

That's quite the logical leap there.

You missed my point or intentionally disregarded it. Organizing implies it was all his idea. It implies that he called all the people there to view it. We have no evidence of that and the Star Telegram can go pound sand for insinuating as such since there is no evidence to that. He posted a video of something bad that he shouldn't have posted. We don't know much beyond that.
