What Seth Littrell may be teaching me about North Texas

Is historical ineptitude and institutional malfeasance a serious defense for why we shouldn’t have basic expectations? -
What Seth Littrell may be teaching me about North Texas
meangreenlax replied to TheColonyEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I’ve only been affiliated with North Texas since 2014, so I haven’t gone through decades of trauma that others have experienced. But I was at the Portland State disaster, so I think I can appreciate what it’s been like to be a long term UNT fan. Things are generally trending upwards. The university is investing, and we pulled 26k to Apogee to watch a FCS matchup. All good signs. However I’m just worried about the fact that we haven’t capitalized on the opportunities we’ve had over the past 3 years and—while it’s very early in the season—things aren’t looking great right now. But as is stated here and other places, it is incredibly frustrating to have to watch this team win 80 percent of the games it’s supposed to, 0 percent of the tough ones, and get blown out in bowl games. It’s become a pattern, and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to acknowledge it. The season won’t be over if we drop to 1-2 or whatever heading into C-USA play, but we will be looking back on what could have been. -
If some huge changes don’t occur over the next week, don’t hold your breath. The team that made the trip down 35 this past Saturday will be run out of Cal with a fat L. I hope I’m wrong.

There’s a fine line between being spoiled and having big boy expectations. SL is one of the highest paid coaches in G5. I can appreciate that we’re probably only a stopping ground for him. My gripe is that, if SL left tomorrow, what would his legacy be? Where are the signature wins? We beat up on hapless Arkansas last year. Was that the pinnacle of North Texas football under SL? Every time there’s a smidgen of hype or attention paid to this team, we shit the bed. That is on the coaches. If we have to put up with the constant speculation about SL moving on to another program, I don’t think it is unreasonable to have higher expectations than winning most of the easy games, dropping the tough ones, and getting blown out in a bowl.

DRC: Five thoughts on UNT's loss to SMU
meangreenlax replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Sitting on the home side of the field amongst the hooting thrice divorced ambulance chasers/SMU fans, it felt like a rivalry. They do not like us, and we don’t like them. When TCU kicks them to the curb and discontinues that series, they’ll come to their senses. They might never admit it, however. -
I agree. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we have the luxury of waiting to heat up halfway through the game. I don’t think this is on Mason but I do kinda expect more from our senior QB.
-
Normally I wouldn’t be too concerned with the offense not firing on all cylinders. But it’s clear we have literally no room for error. The defense will get punched in the mouth, allow 3 or 4 big scoring drives, and maaaaaybe the O will start moving the ball. It’s a recipe for a long disastrous season. Houston is going to absolutely destroy us if things don’t change.

This team has a 5 win defense. All SMU had to do was play simple matchups in the secondary. They beat our DBs like drums. Our only hope was that the offense would elevate us to a 9-10 win team. Well folks, doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. Reeder’s offense looks tepid and, I’m not sure how he did it, but he’s found a way to make our WRs look mediocre. I hate to say this, and it might not be accurate because of my vantage point in the stadium, but Mason looked hesitant and like he didn’t have any confidence. If that’s really the case, we’ve regressed significantly. After having to endure the SMU shitheads yesterday, I’m glad I decided not to book a flight to Cal.

Loooool this looks like the Great Value brand of party areas that have been popping up in professional stadiums. Good stuff Smoo

They’re more aligned with UNT than they are TCU at this point. They’re on the outside looking in like the rest of us. The sooner they realize that, the better.

Official SMU Game Score Prediction Thread
meangreenlax replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
It's tempting to assume the worst after last week's second half defensive lapses. ACU is a middling team and we gave up a handful of big plays late in the 3rd and 4th quarters. On the surface they looked like mental mistakes, but that doesn't really matter does it? We have the better offense, hands down. Special teams looked good too. Since I'm not sure about the defense and offensive play calling, I'm 50/50 on how this game will turn out. First team to 60 points wins. -
This guy is clearly operating at a higher level than we can comprehend. He backed Herman Cain, so clearly he knows a winner when he sees one.
-
There's some truth to that. There are no SMU fans under 60 years old so the rivalry is dying out.
-
P0ny Fans is one big delusional circle jerk. They could have gotten their backs blown out by AState and they would still think UNT has no chance.
-
Since 2000 UNT has won 3, and SMU has won 4. I might be a partisan, but wins from the Coolidge and Hoover Administrations aren't that relevant.
-
Houston looks good against the run. It's hard to extrapolate on the bad plays given that OU is #4 in the country.
-
I hope this a money game for UH. Looks like it's going to be a long night for them if OU keeps averaging 12 yards a play.
-
It might look good from the highway but during the majority of our games it accentuates the fact that we're not operating at full capacity. Functional bowl seating, or adding height to the visitors side (which sometimes looks like a high school stadium on TV) would have been better. I like Apogee but I find some of the decisions puzzling.

***OFFICIAL ACU vs. UNT in-Game Discussion***

I’m trying not to read too much into the big plays given up towards the end of the game. The most charitable interpretation is that the defense shifted into garbage time mode and lost focus. For the sake of my mental health I’ll go with this one until proven otherwise. I’m still a little unsatisfied with the win though. According to some ACU fans we’re no better than EWU or James Madison? Well we didn’t do too much in the second half to prove them wrong. You really have to beat the breaks off of these FCS teams and keep them down, or else its an asterisk as you move through the rest of the season. On to the next one. -
The “This is North Texas” video? They did a great job with it and hopefully they post it

Great crowd tonight considering the opponent. I hope the students keep coming back for more. Also, the more time I spend in Apogee, the less I like the Wing zone. Nobody wants to sit all the way up at the top of that thing and it consistently makes the stadium look empty as hell.

Not sure about that. If we don’t at least get to 9 wins this year I don’t think he’s going anywhere. He hasn’t done much other than win regular season games in the worst conference in FBS. -
Wren needs to get on the horn and book a Florida State matchup 😂. That program is a shell of its former self
