I think that its a positive at the very least. He tweeted out he commited, then he removed it the commitment tweet and the UNT from his bio, and this morning he has it back up. Seems like the kid took the stuff to heart about doing what is best for the player and not other people that are trying to impact your school. If we can hang onto Mr. Gage, he will be a solid player for this staff. ---------------------------------------------- Also, do we know who recruited him? They tagged guys on the offensive side of the ball but he tweeted at Coach Brown and his bio says CB. -

Gage is the 2nd highest recruit in C-USA and he just comes in .0004 points behind a Safety from TX that is going to UAB. Awesome addition to the class. -
Just looking at his 24/7 his dad is his head coach, and his brother plays at Texas A&M. Also, nice size in terms of height The kid has great ball placement, and just to compare someone that he looks similar to in the pocket in terms of movement and throwing motion is Sam Bradford.
-
Another thing, Zac Orr tweeted at Gage as well saying congrats. This is huge for us and hope other NFL Alumni tweet congrats at him and others in the future

On twitter they tagged the WR coaches. Awesome pick up. Love the offer list and and awesome we are picking up kids like this early in the cycle Also, we are now only 3 points behind UTSA for the lead in C-USA with them having 4 3* and us with 2. -
It's inevitable: Conference USA as we know it is going to change

UNT needs to have success the new 2 or 3 years, and improve the facilities... Having an up and coming program with the Tier 1 Education will make UNT active, along with it being in the DFW Market. WB and NS need to find a way to get alumni excited about UNT. -
Maybe but I believe this kid will likely pick up a few more offers and possibly some bigger schools as well.
-
And they are a program that has produced NFL talent, and a program that is away from home....

That stat line i saw had Quinn in the 50% range, but it must have been earlier in the game or something. With that being said, i'm glad that Quinn has completing passes at that high of a %. That is needed in this offense. They benched Morris in an Over-Reaction LOL.. he had 3 INTs vs SMU and 2 of them were on the WRs not on Morris. The game does count for something, that is why they do it. It puts these guys into a "semi-game" environment instead of just out on the practice field. About the growing pains, Fine didn't do much in terms of growing. Yes he played solid at times, but at other times he was unable to do anything. I've brought this up since the UTSA game, and people are talking about it now but Fine is not and has not progressed. He takes to many sacks and he just wasn't a great passer. I do agree that it's ideal to RS a QB. That is why I think the staff has to RS Pearson, even if he makes it difficult. But they need to figure it out, last year was an evaluation year.. The staff got to see where these guys were at and now they have not started to bring in their own guys. GH and SL have to find out if Quinn, Fine, Izzy or O'hara are the guys or if they even in consideration for anything besides a practice arm. This team could and may have some set backs as well. This OL is about to get an injection of Freshman... People are high on Newman and Morse. We have to be prepared for some of these young OL getting playing time as well. We can say that Pearson didn't go up against a solid pass-rush, but Pearson can only go up against who they put him out against. Pearson was still going up against solid guys on defense in Minor, Garner, heck even Jenks and Brooks at CB.... The problem with Fine is that he has regressed and it started when we were at Army. Yes Fine has had a few solid drives but that was in garbage time mostly. When Fine is willing to throw the ball out of bounds for 2nd and 10 instead of 2nd and 18, and when Fine shows he can hit a WR on an out route and not short it then we he will be start showing some progress.
-
We have to remember when we were that young, most everyone wanted to go off some place and not stay close to home....

DRC: Thoughts on UNT's QB situation following spring practice
BTG_Fan1 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Pearson could only play vs who they put in front of him, but he looked a lot more confident in the pocket, and was able to locate the passes. Fine meanwhile still short-armed passes, and couldn't get over 60% with the #1 WR group. Totally agreed. Everyone here is pulling for Fine, we want Fine to be the guy who passes this program off to someone like Pearson. But Fine has to progress, not regress. -
No one should expect him to be an all conference player, but people should expect him to have progressed even a little. Fine has not progressed really at all, if any. Fine still doesn't throw the ball away when he should just take the in-completion instead of trying to make something out of nothing. Fine still under-throws WRs routinely, and that hurts this offense A LOT. No one has unsupported Fine, everyone here hopes that he becomes somethings special. But the kid has not progressed on the field from what we have seen. Last year Fine seemed to have a lot more negative plays, but they were covered up by Wilson breaking it over/ taken over a game or the defense coming up big. SL said that he wanted to rotate his QBs at times if they weren't playing well or to even give them "mental breaks' he said in one of his pressers. He never took out Fine and I have no idea why. He had a quick leash for Morris, and Morris played well when given his chances. Yes he throw some INTs vs SMU, but how many were on him? Everyone vs SMU had a bad game. Honestly, I just wish SL would have said that he stuck with Fine because he wanted to gain him experience, instead of not saying anything. Morris settled down once he got to play. He throw 2 INTs in 3 games to end the year (SM, UTEP, Army) and the Army INT was because the WR slipped. We can only image what could have been if they had stuck with Morris. This is so true. It was pound away with Wilson and hope it could open up Fine for the pass every once and awhile. With that being said, the bold parts are 100% true and we all show it first hand. When this offense could complete passes and get into a flow of things, this offense was able to move the ball and score. Even in garbage time it was true vs MTSU, UTSA, LAT, heck even morris did it in the HoD Bowl and vs Southern Miss at times. When the QBs are able to place the ball and complete passes or the WRs don't drop it, it lets this offense go up tempo. Pearson is the only one to show he can complete over 60% of his passes and he did at 72% compared to Fine and Quinn in the 50s. Pearson also showed the can complete the deep pass and hit his man in stride, and did not get phased by the pressure either by keeping his eyes down field or even waiting till the last possible second to get the ball out on screen plays. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pearson was the real winner at the QB spot at the Spring game. Quinn and Fine can show off and look good in practice but that didn't translate to the scrimmage. Yes, Quinn had a solid 2nd half, but that was after a bad 1st half so we could say he broke even, and Fine tossed another INT and didn't seem to move the offense. We can say that Pearson needs to be RS, but honestly he could not do much worse than Fine did last year. How much of Fines stats came in garbage time, and how many lucky breaks did Fine get? He got a few vs Army in terms of dropped INTs, and the lucky TD.

Didn't @Cooley bring up that he left because he was replaced byt a sophomore at QB?

This +1. Also, I'm hoping that Izzy can come in and be the starter Day 1, the staff not pull him like they did Morris. Give the guy a bit of time to get into the flow of it. The good thing is that we start off with Lamar, and it should be a good way to start off the year in terms of shaking off the rust and building confidence. Fine is a great kid, and we all want to see him have success, but he just hasn't developed. Fine was someone who is a great kid to have on the team, because he will challenge whoever is in front of him. Fine, I think in 1 or 2 years could be the 2nd coming of Quinn. I'm hoping that this time next year, Izzy has locked up the QB1 spot, but Pearson is pushing him hard for it. I think there is a difference between Fine 2016 and Pearson 2017... At this time last year we didn't have any QBs who had any meaningful reps in an NCAA game. Last year they brought in Morris, Fine, Carson and O'hara, with that being said Morris graduated, and O'hara is still injured.. This year they just brought in Izzy and Pearson. Honestly the combo of Izzy and Pearson is alot more attractive than the 4 from last year. With that being said, the QB depth char should come down to Fine/Pearson/Izzy. Ideally, I think SL and the staff ideally want to RS Pearson, but he had a solid showing for a Freshman even if it was against the 2nd team defense. The kid has 14 or 15 practices before the spring game, and he came away impressing a lot of people. This offense last year was hindered by incompletions and drops that killed drives and lead to us having to rely on Wilson to much at times, and we saw Quinn and Fine both have completion % around 55, while Pearson was over 70%. If I'm SL, Its down to Izzy or Pearson starting with Quinn and Fine battling it out for the 2nd QB. Izzy and Pearson both have the size and arm strength. Pearson has shown the accuracy as well. I don't think Izzy can be RS either, so they may hurt Pearson as well.

I would think that WB isn't likely to fire anyone during his 1st year here, even as the sports year slows down. No idea if people are on contract here or if they are renewed annually, or if people are just in hourly spots, but I would think some people will be slowly phased out and others reshuffled. Something that other schools are doing to cut some costs are getting different students involved. Southern Miss has it set up that students actually do the ticket office work with them being overseen by a manager, with the students getting paid via Work Study, fulfills a class they are taken, and real-world experience. I've brought it up and would like to see WB and the staff, and the school use the students here. Marketing students to design and develop marketing promos, graphic design students for the recruit cards and game highlights, the post game/ weekly interviews should have more student that are interested in sports journalism, student reports could do more 1 on 1 interviews with coaches as well, etc... that would promote students being involved and connected with UNT/UNT Sports and given students real world experience to add to their portfolios/ resumes as well.

I know Wyche was in workout clothes but no idea why, and Okee got injured in camp (hammy or knee, I believe). Speaking of injuries, I noticed TJ limped off with a hammy injury in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of the game, I'm assuming he didn't go back into the game? I wasn't looking at RBs much and only focused on them when Smith was in, but I would like to hope that the RB picking up blitz's will improve when Wilson is back with his experience. This is very premature as well, but if the defense continues this into the year... Reff could be gone after the year, the defense and ability to pressure was impressive to me. I'm assuming that he is a Summer-Grad/ Transfer at Cal-Fullerton. Hopefully McGehee can come in and be a solid player day 1, no offense to the kid yesterday but he has a very long way to go.
-
Thinking that the 1 or 2 scholarships we got left, need to be used on the OL that are grad transfers.
-
Quinn did improve, but the only worry with him is that he is a 1 and done player. Fine, Izzy, and Pearson are here for multiple years. This is a legit and important question for the staff...
-
I do agree, we all have to hope that Fine is the lowest rated/ worst QB SL and the staff bring in because that means they are improving the talent. The QB spot should be used just like last year. If Fine slips up, they should turn to Izzy or Pearson. The only thing that hurts Quinn is that he has just this season left. Pearson I would love to RS and I think he should be unless Fine is out for an extended amount of time and Izzy or Quinn are not up for the job. With that being said, I do get the whole use fine as a wildcat QB/ Read Option QB but that can't happen nor would it happen till we someone who will make Fine the back up. I do agree english looked good, and bull-rushed through the OL at times as well. I did like the English/ Hambone combo but I would like to see see Ham/English/Young Special teams and punting, I think would improve. The punter we had today was a walk on and the punter from signing day will be here in the summer for fall practices right? The pressure I'm hoping stays like this, but the real question is was it legit or was it because of poor OL play like last year? Guyton I was shocked at just how big he was. Rico was solid and kept the up going upward after the bowl game. Was Tyler Wilson out? Duhon and Lawerence I think are guys to watch and could play a big role being that 2nd group of WRs behind Rico, Smiley, Wilson and Guyton. Chumley looked the part can could be a mismatch just because of his size, so I hope he can trans The QBs I'm going say Fine did not look like someone who should be just given the job no questions asked, Quinn seemed quick like Vito has said to run. Pearson looked good and his completion % was outstanding. That is something that I'm shocked with Fine, is that his % remained the same as last year. I did like that Pearson would throw the ball away, did Fine throw it away? Also, Izzy I'm assuming was out because of his ACL? Wish we could have gotten to see him play. The OL was very worrisome to me, and now the question is do we roll with the OL we have or can the incoming guys like Parish, W-Spoon, Newman, Morse, Brummer come in and play. So here a question because I do think the defense owned the day as well.. But with that being said, was the defense that much better? or is the OLine as worrisome as last year?
-
I took it as like the guys said above.. He was still Rehabing and just held out so he didn't get the wear and tear of practices, but it could be they already know what they have in him and its a way to get more practice time for Smith, Wyche, Hosley, etc.

NTTV is still on, and my only thought on why they don't have it on NTTV is likely to encourage students to go to the game instead of staying home... But I would like to see them have it on the Local city govt channels (City of Denton, along with other cities as well) Also, its interesting the 500k we will make from it off-sets the cost of GM Buyout.
