Looking at Kason Martin, UNT's Newest Quarterback Commitment
BTG_Fan1 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Will be interesting. Martin, Pearson, Fine all seem like kids that will fight and stay late if needed. On top of Izzy who has the size and was getting P5 looks as well. Agreed, I was wondering the same thing about no announcement. Because they have posted other things since Martin tweeted out his commitment -
Was academics a problem with Wilson before UNT? Or could this just have to deal with his dad passing during last season?
-
We definitely needing a lot more yardage from our WRs. Agreed but hoping it's Guyton at 800, Rico at 600. That would bold well in going into the following season in terms of production and experience.

UNT is really stepping up their social media game
BTG_Fan1 replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Solid use of social media to show love to recurits and keep them reminded about UNT. 1 of the many areas we lagged behind that we are now just catching up. Also, like the chrome helmet as well. Before new unis are showcased to fans, they should blast out the new uniforms design to recruits and current players like the one for Amare Jones. -

Should go after Danny Gray. Yea we got burned by Johnson and Haynes, but if he doesn't qualify can always get a kid late and worth it taken 1 or 2 chances on kids that could be a boom product. -
Probably because we already have an RB committed for this class, and we have already signed 4 RBs in the past 2 classes as well.
-
It should be with the likes of English, Young, Hambone, TJ, Flu as well. Noviel will be fun to see if he can do anything, looked more explosive than Hambone while Hambone looked more physical. ------------- My breakout candidate is the FT. Worth RS-FR QB turned WR Griffin. We needed a shifty slot guy and hopefully he can be that guy for this offense. Adding him only makes the WRs deeper behind Guyton, RICO, smiley, and Tyler Wilson. My question is who is that #2 WR? Is it Rico or Turner? They both should see the field a lot but wonder who is paired with Guyton

DRC (updated): Kason Martin talks about committing to UNT
BTG_Fan1 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Morris yes throw multi-TDs and I was a huge fan of Morris that wanted him to play more but he still only won 1 game! He lost it vs SMU, UTEP, Army. We can go back and wish and hope about what could have been, but he was a guy who gave away to many possessions, while Fine took to many sacks. The point about those guys are that they played in it in the NFL with guys who were not talented. Manning and Brady made guys that were afterthoughts into something special and something they were not. It can be done in college game as well. We can think that we are not getting talent but we are on here as a hobby/ thing to do while the people getting paid are saying that these kids are potentially solid players at QB. Many people around the state have said positive things about Pearson and Martin. In a year having Martin, Pearson, Fine, Izzy, hell even Quinn battling it out is a lot better than just Morris and Fine at this time last year. The point that I've made repeatly is that UNT doesn't have the tools that kids want most of the time. We don't have the facilities of other schools that people like to compare us too. That is one of the reason we lose recruits. We lose recruits because of the crappy record for years, and everyone knowing UNT for losing. Kids know UNT has a history of losing, kids know UNT doesn't have the facilities (yet, we hope). Kids view UNT has the back up school. Most Kids want to go to places like TCU/UT/AM then Tech/OSU then UNT. Yes a lot of schools run different versions of the spread, but not all kids come in and fit in. Hell we ran a power run spread under Mac, according your logic it should be simple for us go from one to the other. No some of these kids are built for our scheme. Hell look at Jordan Murray, he is a straight ahead blocker not a quicker tackle. We have to find kids that fit our scheme or that have skills that can translate to this schem. I want and trust this staff to find the right fits, you can think that they find bad recruits but yet they have added talented kids with no other offers, in Wilson, Hambone, Wheeler, Dee among others. yes bring in the best kids possible, but we are competing with a bunch of programs that come in here for Air-RAID similar to what we play, LAT,Tech, UH, AM, OSU, TCU, Baylor, just to name a few of the local schools. We can't not compete with any of these schools success, bowls, next level production, facilities, let alone scheme production, or even name recognition of the school with the bigger schools. If we can't get the best kids, which to this point what has changed outside of a bowl game since SL has gotten here? Nothing. Not one announcement about new facilities, not one real upgrade to the current facilities. Hell we are waiting on an announcement about new unis and the IPF because of $. Announce the IPF, announce the other upgrades and then people will donate. Show off the new uniforms to be getting the attention or keeping the attention of recruits. UNT it's always something is coming then it never does come. Hell they announced the soccer stadium and then pushed it back. This is something else that hurts us. -

What it has to do with UNT is that scheme can translate to the pros. Also, yes it's great to have the best recruits but it doesn't always translate to wins. Bama signs some of the top classes and loss, UT/A&M sign some of the best classes in the state and loses. The logic that the best player work in all schemes are wrong. We see this all the time and it happened with Morris. He was by far the most talented and had the best offer list of probably any UNT QB. TCU when they were in CUSA and other G5s, they would recruit RBs and then move them around because the players could/would project into their schemes. Less talented teams have to use the spread scheme to their advantage. That is how Oregon went from a nobody to someone. Phil Knoght poured in millions into the facilities, which gave recruits another reason to consider Oregon. Also, bringing in Kelly made it so the offense was attractive, even though he came from D2 at Delaware. The reason that the best teams are recruiting the best kids, is because the best kids fit the scheme. Being to long in the tooth is fine, but college football is turning into a new systems game. Kids want to go to the best schools, that can make them the best player, and that can get them to the pros. -
Maybe Brin lost offers lol, or the tape was reviewed/other sites rated him differently.

Just saying but Brady and Manning won super bowls out of the spread. Also, didn't GH win a Super Bowl as the back up? -
I have no idea. The Alamodome could be see some improvements but its in a great spot and honestly not in terrible condition. I'd rank UTSA ahead of SMU and TXST for sure
-
This information will be seen as not relevant, let alone just lighting in the barrel for the people who only believe in offer lists. But good information to know. C-USA is where we develop the kids. Also, its crazy that those are the schools that win and have put multiple players into the NFL.

BTG_Fan1 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
You can talk about outliners and that but people are just using examples of how Tech produced some of the passing numbers in all of the college football, and so has Hawaii. But yet none of those QBs did anything..Heck the best football team in the nation, Alabama couldn't even get a QB to get drafted high and they have only had 1 QB stick in the NFL and he isn't even a starter in the recent history. (But Tech produced the RD1 pick) I would take whoever the best QB the coaches think for our system and potential. Just because kids have a great offer list does not make that kid more likely to be a great player either. An offer is just like a pro player getting a big contract, the offers are for what you have done and what teams hope that you can do. The more offers the better (Yes), but it does not mean that the player will work out. For ever 0/1/2 offer guy on the team that has done something, we have others that have had 3/4/5 that haven't done a thing! McClain had 1 other offer from TXST in the 2014, but yet the guys with multiple offers in 2014 like Chumley and Goree had 5+ offers and they didn't/ haven't amounted to anything here. Mason Fine had 0 offers and replaced Morris, a kid that played at BAMA and had a huge offer list! We had a PWO WR replace Goree after he got kicked off the team, and we noticed the PWO more than we did Goree. Offer lists are sexy, but they mean ZERO once they are on the field. No one will argue that the more offers the better or less the worse the player is. ITS ABOUT HOW THEY PRODUCE ON THE FIELD. Production on the field is done through a scheme, not through an offer list! -
NFL production is an important thing for these recruits. These kids are 18 years old and everyone/most of them have dreams of playing in the NFL. These recruits want the tools to get to the pros, and the tools to get them to the pros are start of the art facilities, coaches and schemes that will get them to progress as well. We can look over the likes of why Goree picked UNT over other places, and I was not on the board at the time but I would assume it was aided by location and us adding his teammate as well. But Goree isn't here any more and he had the tools to be a talented player and asset to this offense but it didn't work out. Miles again I have no idea but looking at those schools maybe it was about playing time, or a degree that he wanted. Brooks again, no idea. You can string off names of recruits that we beat for LAT and UTSA, but he isn't the coach here any more. We all know why. Yes good recruiters can sale kids on coming to different places, but with UNT lacking in some notable areas while LAT/UTSA have had success it doesn't help. We can keep saying oh a recruiter would do great here, but we have no idea. We thought a lot of different things this past season, and not many/ not anyone had posted that we would be playing in the HOD Bowl, let alone against a team that had knocked of a ranked team this year. We can say that we have to hold this staff accountable and that we need to question them, but these are young coaches that aren't coaching for UNT to be there last stop like Mac was. This is the start to some of these guys careers, and some of them are in positions that they may not fully been ready for either (GH and EK, last year). This staff is talented and will get this turned around. Yes they should not be dominating UNT, but they are dominating UNT because of the past decade or two here at UNT. The lack of putting out NFL Talent has lacked and Orr was likely going to be someone that could be a very bright star that UNT could point to as a success. Orr alone playing in Baltimore in a very well known place for defense and wearing 54 after Ray Lewis would have been huge, let alone him getting the 2nd All-Pro Selection in his 1st year starting. Also, just going to put it out there, I think that Orr would have give a signable donation to UNT as well once he had signed a sizable/long term deal. LAT has had notable kids drafted yearly, and often. The lack of winning here in Denton has hurt us while LAT has won games, bowls as well. It also doesn't that LAT went to the Air-Raid before we did have been putting up some of the top offensive numbers in the nation. Yes, UNT can start to turn the tide against us, it can be done by just showing another season of improvement on offense and defense. This team was still in the 100+ range in terms of offense, get that up to 70 or 80 and its a huge improvement, but still no where near the Top 10/20 offense of LAT but it is a start, and it can be done. UNT can challenge LAT, and will hopefully in just a few short years, it will be challenging people like UH. UNT under RV made terrible choices in terms of coaches, how the budget was spent, and relationships with donors. WB has reviewed the budgets and seems to have the backing of NS and the UNT system. They showed us that with the buyout to GM, the new contract to SL, the soccer/track stadium, and the pending announcement of the IPF. Upgrading the facilities will be a major improvement for UNT because of the lack of them here. That investment will allow us to showcase it to recruits and show them and current HS Coaches/ and families about the seriousness of UNT. That will lead to more interest and us having more leeway with recruits and help us counterbalance the negative thoughts of UNT. While WB is doing that, SL just has to keep finding kids that fit the scheme, and that will have success. Success on the field for a few years will also help us. UNT is on the right path, they just have to make long term investments (facilities) that will help the short term investment (coaches).

I was not high on Quinn, because he was a PWO but I bought into the hype of Morris because he was coming from Bama, and because everyone was in love with his offer list. I have now come to the realization that its not about the offers, but how the player fits into the scheme. SL, GH, and Reff have coached and played for a while and have been in their current schemes for along time. We have to trust that they are able to find kids to turn this around. -
A lot of people here don't seem to understand that for some reason.
-
LAT is one of the better G5
-
With our situation that we are in we could not afford to lose anyone else, the current staff has taken a few risks with guys like Hoston, Haynes, Johnson who couldn't qualify. That is why I think its a reason that we have all the kids that signed from NSD here, and then we had 2 blueshirts not make in King and Tibbs. They got burned by 3 guys who they thought would be critical pieces to that first class that never showed up and it hurt us. Taken a step below and knowing they will be here for the long term is the way they went this class. The good thing is that the kids they have brought in have had alot of offers from schools like Rice that focus on grades. Also, that is funny people want to compare to WMU have out of the 15 they lost over half of them lol

Our locker sucks as well, we all have discussed this. The players could careless about commuting to ours as well since some/most of them live off campus. Again the players don't see what fans see in terms of how bad the alamodome is but even then its still not that bad, and to them its not that old. I've been down there and its not as bad as Fouts was when we were going bowling. The things that UTSA has invested in, is developing a program. How long again did they start us? They are able to show that the have progressed from nothing to where they are present day. UNT has been playing D1 Football for over 2 Decades, but yet my high school as 2 weight rooms and UNT has 1 and my high school is building an IPF, which UNT has yet to announce. The weightrooms and IPF have not been something that just grew over the last 2 or 3 years, these have been things going on for 5-10 years, and UNT has lagged behind. We pay more to our coaches and staffs because we are a larger university than them, and SL came from being an OC while Wilson came from LSU and being an RB Coach. The staffs are paid what they are paid, no fighting with that. Yes we have a campus stadium that is 30-45 minutes away on a good day from Dallas and Fort Worth, they have a stadium that is 10-15 minutes away from downtown. You can bash them for 0 Tradition, thats fine with me since they are new school, the history leans in their advantage because again we have like 4 winning in 20+ years. They have 0 bowl wins in 10 years, compared to our 3 in how long? Oh and we have won 2 in 20+ years, just so we can fair to UTSA (so they have another 10-11 years to win 2 games). We have 0 conference championships in 13 years, and they have been around for 10, so its not like we that much ahead of them. If you really wanna break it down, we have won 24 Conference titles and we have been playing football since 1913, so 24 titles in 104 years.... The kids that we are recruiting now, were under the age of 4 years old the last time that we won a conference championship. Those same kids have seen us win 2/3 of our bowl games as well, for a school that has been around for as long as well. Yes the AD office was lead in a terrible direction under RV, and he is mostly to blame for the status of the Athletic Department. This is why we should be blaming SL and his staff for the crap recruiting. WB has had to go in and evaluate what needs to be fixed and how to fix it. Having to pay off Mac, RV, etc eats into the AD Budget. WB has to find ways to generate added revenue for the Athletic Department, for these coaches to have the benefit and tools necessary to sale UNT, hell the cases that I have made today for UTSA, people believe and see these reason that I'm stating and I don't even go to UTSA to add to the areas that are overlooked! If we want to get serious about recruiting, we have to start at UNT first. Improve the experience and the tools here and it will expand outward! Build the darn IPF, Expand the offices so that Football has its own weightroom, and expanded offices. Building the IPF so that other sports can use it and sale those sports. Build a Nutritional Center to aid these kids bodies during the summer, pre/post workouts, so that they can see improvements that will help them get to the next level. None of this is meant to bash or hate on UNT, it is meant to show where we can be improved! Recruits want to go to a place that can get them to the next level. High School Kids have no idea what they wanna do and dream/think that they can go to the NFL. UNT as it stands today is not turning out NFL Talent because of the lack of facilities to draw them here. Build the IPF, Build the weightroom, Build the Nutritional Center, have some flashy uniforms and the players will come if SL and his staff can keep winning some games. Heck, Just getting to 7-8 wins for the next 2-3 years will be huge for us. Change that image that High School coaches, parents, and players see by going to 1 or 2 more bowl games.

Any chance he can be a Dec Grad? -
Do we know by chance if he can be a Dec grad? I'm assuming it maybe unlikely since it hasn't been mentioned, but would be great to get him here and fall like we did with Pearson. Really wanna see these 2 challenge each other.
-
I'm just telling you that if you compare the 2 schools like everyone likes to do here, UTSA has more going for it in terms of recruiting. Our history of losing hurts us, our lack of NFL production of players has hurt us, the lack of investment in the facilities for a major university is pathetic, along with the terrible coaching choices made before SL. Players don't look at the education outside of what to major in, because they go by the prestige of the football program. If we as UNT don't improve these things then its a waste of our time to compare us to UTSA. Its not crazy or being a fan of UTSA, its simply stating the facts that our coaches face out on the recruiting trail.
-
This is an encouraging sign as well. Bringing in more talented kids at QB is needed.
