over 1500 yds and 16Td's his senior season with HP I had no idea Troy Edward's son was on the team. That is a blast from the past name former LaTech star and 1st round pick.

I like Mosley fine, but curious if this is just your research on him or if you know him. He and Wren are very different.

In addition to Hank who is going to work for the Denton Chamber of Commerce and will continue to do radio, (which I think is a better fit for him and UNT). - the CFO we poached from the AAC went back to the AAC at the beginning of the year. So it sounds like they sort of merged the responsibilities of those two across these employees.

While it is a high profile job the pay is not wildly different (Fulmer's base was 900k) and taking that gig would be a career killer. The football program is in total disarray and sanctions are likely. You could clean things up, turn football around and still finish third in your division each year. He has been offered other options, but there are only a handful he would seriously entertain and he wants the top job not to be an AD in waiting. We are compensating him well for a G5 AD, the location is close to his family and friends and the jobs he would look at don't come open every year. With your star rising, why cash in your chips now and get fired in four years when you can keep building and take a shot at your dream job down the line?

My understanding is that 100% of them found employment at other universities, and the scandal has not followed. Both Gush and PB have long track records at other schools before this where there were also no issues. That SI piece linked about PB was excellent, I wasn't aware of that story about his wife.

We've got to keep our composure (DC TIDBIT @ THE BOTTOM)

He was at A&M from 2012-2014, hired by Sumlin. -
I co-sign this. I would have loved this with the one candidate. Experience as a head coach even if it is in HS helps you learn how to both manage and motivate the players on the roster. A coach like this would provide a boost to recruiting but more importantly they could help guide a first time HC.

You generally have great takes and your coordinator info is exactly spot on, but this isn’t true. Wren and boosters both pushed the extension hard. Look I’m team Wren all the way but Wren has actively lobbied for extensions and more money across all sports (as he should) from soccer to Grant. He wants to expand budgets and this is a way to gradually do that. Football has been his Achilles heel so far - I don’t believe SL has accepted enough guidance from WB. That is on Wren, the department was given a much greater budget and it’s up to him to make certain its used correctly rather than wasted. With this coordinator hire Wren is finally saying use the money you have we aren’t just expanding your asst. pool $ with out results since it’s already a healthy amount for a G5. This is a welcome change in my book, but what SL does with this new normal is going to be pivotal to his coaching trajectory. He can take advice and adapt like he did with recruiting or have his time here cut short. Hoping he’s able to learn a new trick.

Was 100% his extension.

Nope, we have 1a and 1b pinned down. If the deal gets done folks will be pleased.

*Updated* Kevin Sumlin: Deal (Steal) of the Century
xyresic replied to Pseudo Nym's topic in Mean Green Football
No disrespect intended to an alumni, mainly just poking fun and I appreciate your response. My point was that we have a coach who is recruiting well for a G5 (for the past three cycles) and he made his mark as an offensive mind. You have correctly pointed out that Sumlin's strengths are these exact things, but he comes with lots of question marks. I am not saying Seth is a sure thing at all and I think we all expected more at this juncture, but if we are going to upset the apple cart we want to be certain in three years we aren't buying out another coach. You are also ignoring things like buyouts typically need to be paid up front (as an example I think Sumlin's was due in 30 days) so to save a small amount per year we could be shelling out millions up front which would actually nullify your financial argument. In any event your thesis is that Sumlin is a splash hire and then we can hire a better DC. My counter is we can just hire a better DC. The prior point that this may be more difficult with Seth's struggles might have some merit. Long story short I think your idea of a splash hire is good, but I'd prefer it be for a DC that needs a second chance and has been a stud before rather than Sumlin. -

I’m split on if this thread is trolling or just insane. We don't need a crazy deal to financially engineer more assistant pool money by hiring a retread P5 coach that is on the ropes. Our coach salary spending and budget has been ratcheted up and is now near the top of G5 schools. We just need a DC who can coach & develop the talent we have. 350k in CUSA should be able to get the job done for a great DC. -

Agreed, after his last year at UH and first at A&M he was probably the top young coach in the game. Everything since that time has hurt his resume. His recruiting at zona was worse than his predecessors as well. They had some top 35-40 classes before him. -

Your budget comment is not true, A&M spends much more than the Miss. schools, Mizzou, Vandy etc. Sure the SEC is stacked but by any financial metric they are always at or near the top. Let’s look at the facts: - Multi million buyouts from his last two jobs for underperforming expectations. - lost 12 straight, including ending on a 63 point blowout - 9 total wins in 3 seasons at Arizona - Briles, not Sumlin took UH to the next level -

His 2020 record 0 wins 5 losses. Literally fired after getting beat by their biggest rival 70-7. If we are going to make a move I think we can do better than a guy that had one great season at A&M (who has more budget and resources than anyone) and has seen his number of Wins decline in each of his past eight seasons as a head coach. He completely lost his Arizona team. We will pass on your burner account and steal of the century. -
I agree - does a guy want to be the 4th running back at UT or get a shot at playing on Sundays like Jeff Wilson...I think the staff should market guys like Guyton in a presentation to roll out online. HS star goes to a P5 has a few bumps and lands with UNT and turns that opportunity into a contract with the Chargers.

Apples & oranges comparing a state school with 40k+ students you can attend for under $20k to private schools where it costs north of $65k+. More to the point of how this relates to football, I don't think academic reputation is the driving decision for transfers - it is playing time. As a quick aside since you were crapping on your school - this year UNT is now ranked 121st among the nation's top public schools "leaping upward from its 140th ranking last year. UNT upped its national university ranking moving ahead of other renowned universities to earn a 249th placement amongst all American universities up from 281st position last year." While SMU dropped from 59th to 66th. Back to your topic we don't need to out recruit TCU and SMU. There is plenty of talent in the metroplex and state for us to do just fine. People forget that there are only a handful of QB1's in FBS each year. How many schools in FBS can offer a clear shot at a starting gig in a offense that is going to put up eye popping numbers?
-
We only played 10 games this season but I calculated percentages based on number of passing attempts and 2020 was better than 2019 or 2018. Re: your comment about needing a short gain and not getting it. Our offense converted the most 3rd downs in CUSA (only 8 teams in FBS had more 3rd down conversions) and at the second best percentage rate in CUSA and 28th best in the nation. We can agree to disagree here and while I think the numbers back up what I have said, my point was that the O-Line will be even better next season
-
At least Billy is able to read and process numbers. There is nothing to back this claim, because it doesn't make sense. If in fact they were not pressuring the QB's you would think our running game would not have found so much more success right? Or did opposing Defenses also "plan" to let us run for over 5 yards per carry?
-
Posts like this are exactly what I am talking about. The line gave up less sacks per drop back than they did with Mason in 2019 and in 2018 despite having two green Qb's. We averaged 5.2 ypc vs 4.1 ypc last season. We are returning everyone and as Billy noted we have new guys that will push into the lineup as well.

I know Defense needs the most attention and I or someone else can write them up later but here is a look at next season's offense before transfers for perspective. This is an incredibly young team. QB: Aune and Bean will both have another year under their belts. There is a chance for a Transfer & maybe one of our younger QBs can separate from the backup group and push the starters. Even with just our two returning QBs you'd mark this up as an improving area based on game experience. Running Back: We lose Torrey who had his moments, but was more of a big play guy than a consistent every down runner and Nic Smith who was highly recruited but never quite put things together despite being a great team player. I think Siggers and Addaway when healthy are an upgrade here, they both create more yardage after contact and had similar numbers overall when factoring in carries. I think this is a strength. WR: We lose Darden who is a tremendous stud talent. That being said there is probably some argument to be made that balancing offense and targets makes things a bit more challenging for an opposing defense than just keying on one player. Simpson should excel (and averaged more YPC than Darden), Shorter had 9 Td's his last healthy season, AO has all the physical tools just needs a bit of work on the fundamentals. We also have stud recruits coming in including our top recruit of recent history. With so many receivers on the roster it is very telling that guys like senior redshirts were getting passed up by Freshman DB's in the bowl. I think now we will start to see the quality filtering in instead of just quantity. I think even with the loss of Darden we can be as good or better here when factoring in improved QB play. TE: Pirtle was a decent player and a great kid to have in the program but Roberts/Alberding are already very talented and we will have a lot of young guns pushing for playing time here. This position will be better in 2021. O-Line: This was a real bright spot. Brammer has developed into a stud. We return everyone of note plus adding Farrell from Ok. State. As we saw with App State having guys in your program for 4-5 years gives you a huge advantage up front. Every position group on offense should see an improvement next season both from a talent standpoint and depth perspective. For all the recruits and family members of players reading this, the board gets fired up after bad losses but with the facilities, resources and talent coming back this program is trending up - it might not always be a straight line but when you look behind the curtain there is a lot to like. Yes the Defense was generationally bad most of the year, but I think there is going to be improvement there next season and I am confident we are going to make some moves to shore things up (including LB Transfers 👀)

Vito reported all one one year deals I believe, someone can probably clarify. Either way if its a 2 year deal I don't think buying it out is an obstacle.

Asst coaches are typically on one year deals. He also makes 350 not 300.

Still laugh about their chancellor bragging they fire coaches for 8-4 seasons then proceeding to go 4-8 last season and 3-4 this year and not firing their coach -
Totally agree on completion % being the big weak spot for us. Worth noting Brewer put his numbers up against OU, UT & top competition. He'd give us a QB that completes at a higher rate, and can run the ball as well (11Tds rushing in 2019). His game this season against KState was 31-39 300+ yds 2 TDs and 2 more rushing. I think there are two front runners for him (not us) and with one year to play he is not a long term solution, but my belief is adding a QB like him makes this a 9+ win team in 2021.
