Yes, well, where were all those offers the second time around after his season at Butler CC? Once coaches saw a little game film of him against JUCO competition, the offers dried up to the extent that he ended up here.

People keep talking about his "rocket arm." Who cares? He isn't accurate. He underthrows. He overthrows. He can't read defenses worth a crap - which is Job #2 of a Quarterback, right after Job #1: Knowing Your Own Playbook. Having a "rocket arm" doesn't enable you to know your own playbook or read opposing defenses. That comes from sitting on your ass for hours and hours, watching film and studying diagrammed plays. "Rocket arm" means nothing without being able to play the position. It's the same with speed. I don't care about your 40 time if you can't catch, tackle, run through a line of scrimmage, or make defenders miss. Football isn't a contest to see who can run the faster or throw the farthest/hardest. It's not a skills test. It's a game where you have to figure out - within a 20 to 30 second time span - what you should do based on what the opposing team is showing you on the field. If you can't figure out what the other team is doing, you are going to fail at this level. If you want to just screw around at the dorm between practices, eating the free food, chasing p*ssy, and hitting up old friend on social media, play D-II ball.

What we need is a coaching staff that knows what an FBS quarterback looks like coming out of high school. We've gambled a ton on "overlooked" QBs. We know why they were "overlooked" now. Like I said a couple of weeks ago - McNulty, Smith, Greer, Means: It's all the same animal. They should be FCS or lower. They are extremely fortunate to have been given scholarships to an FBS. Not one of them has the talent or drive to succeed at this level. The next head coach has got to bring in some hard working kids who have the tools to do it. Otherwise, we are spinning our wheels for another half decade or more.

In the same boat with you. Have said it before: schools always need quarterbacks...yet, somehow, he passed down to us. And, coaches watch more than just youtube highlights. Something on complete game films kept schools from offering him the second time around out of Butler. Canales does share some of the blame, though, because he is supposed to evaluate these guys during recruiting. And, the off the field evaluation should have tipped us as well - didn't qualify out of high school to get into UCF. Didn't qualify to participate in spring with us. So, it wasn't shocking to learn that he wasn't putting in film time. This isn't a kid that lights his own fire. And, four years after high school, he's way behind the curve. Marshall started a freshman yesterday. He was on a different level than Smith.

Vito update on UNT Coaching Search
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Do what Memphis did...get an OC from a mid-major or non-brand P5 that is doing well. In addition to Brad Cornelsen at Memphis, I think another under the radar name is Kevin Johns, Indiana's OC/QB/WR coach. He's done a great job developing their QB, Nate Sudfeld, in addition to putting together a nice receiving corp. Indiana simply doesn't have the athletes to keep up with the elites in the Big Ten. But, they did give Ohio State and Michigan State some fits. Dark horse candidate, for sure. But, where we are, you kind of can't leave any stone unturned. What I don't want to see happen is to try to fit another square peg in a round hole. In this case, the round hole is "we need better talent." The square peg that I'm afraid we may try to hammer through it is, "has to have strong Texas ties." Texas high schoolers have left Texas for years. I don't think it's exactly headline news to Texas high school coaches when a non-Texan football coach knocks at their door or rings their phone asking about a player or two. What I'd hate to see is good candidates left out. I'm happy that we are looking for an offensive minded coach. But, I don't mind where he comes from. And, if it's a guy from a P5 program, odds are that he's experienced enough in recruiting to get the job done in Texas - or, anywhere. We need talent upgrades all around. I don't care if they come from Texas or Timbuktu! -
Besides us. You look at their games this season. Yes, they are 1-5. But, they have actually been in some dog fights. Season opener, they played very well against Arizona. Okay, Pac-12 team beats them. No surprise. Same thing in game two and three, they lose to Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Understandable. I mean, we talk of having a "tough schedule" this season. But, UTSA cold opened the season playing Arizona, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State the first three weeks of the season. After that, they are 1-3. But, they were only blown out in one of those three losses, a 32-10 loss at Southern Miss. They lost to Colorado State, 33-31 after leading that game 17-16 at half. They then beat UTEP, on the road, 25-6. Then, they took La. Tech to the wire. The Bulldogs kicked a field goal with 10 seconds left in the game to escape San Antonio with a 34-31 win. So, look...UTSA obviously isn't setting the world on fire. But, they are typically moving the ball throughout the game: (1) Arizona, trailed 21-20 at half, scored in three of four quarters. (2) Kansas State, trailed 7-3 at half, scored in one quarter (3) Oklahoma State, trailed 31-7 at half, scored in two of four quarters (4) Colorado State, led 17-16 at half, scored in all four quarters (5) UTEP, led 3-0 at half, scored in three of four quarters (6) La. Tech, trailed 24-10 at half, scored in all four quarters (7) Southern Miss, trailed 16-0 at half, scored in one quarter We have been in one game - one: the season opener at SMU. UTSA has come out fighting in most games, and are a ball hair away from being 3-4 instead of 1-7. So, once you dig into it, you see that, although their QB situation has been turned topsy-turvy by injury (1st teamer Blake Bogenshutz out indefinitely with a concussion) and desertion (2nd and 3rd team QBs Austin Robinson and Russell Bellomy quit the team in September and October, respectively), they have done as well for themselves as can be expected. Also, their only win this year was a road game at UTEP. So, there's that. I'd really, really like to beat UTSA. But, it's as likely that they beat us - and, beat us good...unfortunately. Out of Conference Average Scores: Opponents 44, UTSA 20 C-USA Average Scores: Opponents 24, UTSA 22 We will get a fight from UTSA. Yes, even with the guy who began the season fourth on their depth chart playing QB, we will get a fight from them. Maybe more than we can handle. It's a sad season. I began looking at UTSA's games to try to find a silver lining to the game next Saturday. The opposite happened.

Positive vs Negative Financial Reinforcement
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to UNT 90 Grad's topic in Mean Green Football
You guys and your "trolling" accusations. If anyone disagrees with you, you say it's trolling. Well, congratulations. I'd bet that most of you have been "trolled" your entire lives, then. Learn to deal with people not agreeing with you. Or, in this case, deal with the fact that someone does agree with you, but who feels you could be going about the way you show your displeasure differently. Earth to space cadets: the people in charge can see that the football and basketball program are not doing well. They don't need a flying banner to tell them. -
Exactly. We have become masters of scoring on the last possession with less than two minutes left in the game. Can't move against anybody's ones. UTEP won today. As bad as have been, they improved to 3-4, beating FAU today. Leftwich is back from an early season concussion and threw three TDs with no picks. If he stays healthy, cross UTEP off the list of teams we could beat this season - and, it's a short list: UTEP and UTSA. If we can't move the ball consistently against UTSA, then...well, we're already at the bottom of the barrel. There is no "then" really. We will 0-fer the season if we can't beat UTSA.

Miami is still without full scholarships due to NCAA penalties. Still, you can't get beat like that at home when you are "The U." Was happy to see Testaverde, Highsmith, and other former Hurricane greats were there to see it firsthand, though. Humility is good for "The U." Also enjoyed the end of the OU-Texas Tech game where they kept showing the thoroughly disgusted Kingsbury. Glad to see the quarterback he wouldn't release, then blocked from playing last year, beat his butt on national television. Karma's a bitch, ain't it, Kliffy?

Good for Harry. Another UNT grad able to see the forest and the trees.

If anyone outside the university were normally paying attention, that might be the case. But, it's not. If this were happening at Texas or Oklahoma, it would be embarrassing for them. But, that it's happening here doesn't really seem to be making waves beyond the few alumni that even follow the school's athletics.

Who Should Be The Next Head Coach @UNT

Which Memphis OC? There are two. Dickey likely wouldn't come back to work for Rick. The other, Cornelsen, I'm all for interviewing him. -

I haven't given the department $1 million yet. But, I just look at the whole situation and don't really care so much that I'd waste money on a public spectacle. The bottom line is this, if Rick hadn't done a great number of good things for the department, he'd have been gone long ago. The truth is, he's done plenty of good. Now, I thought he was nuts for hiring Todd Dodge. But...it was what it was. We did end up with a new stadium, partially because of some of the goodwill that accrued from the local hire of Dodge. I'm not one of those saying that "Dodge Built Apogee." I'm just saying, when the dust settled, we had a new stadium...and his last couple of signing classes delivered in 2013. McCarney brought back a lot of energy. Our family tumbled over the wall and celebrated at midfield after the "upset" win over Indiana in 2011. It felt good. The culmination of those good feelings was the Heart of Dallas Bowl. The past two years, things just haven't worked out. I don't see the point in throwing Rick under the bus given all the good he has done - and, is still doing - for the school. And, again, my reference point in measuring how far we've come is being a student from 1990-95. It's just night and day different. Rick has delivered a ton in facilities, given the smaller and women's programs outstanding support, and worked about as hard as he could...with an alumni base that is chock full of a**holes. 90 and I have switched places. Before Apogee and all the improvements and attention paid to the smaller programs, I was calling for Rick's head and 90 was defending him. We've switched roles now. Seeing is believing. And, I could care less what people say about the basketball and football programs. When I was a student here, we were playing the nobodies of the Southland Conference. Many on campus still had a commuter school mentality about the athletics - they didn't care; UNT was just the closest place to continue or finish their education. It's changed. Rick is a big part of it. So, pay for and fly your banner. I hope you get some nice laughs out of it. YOLO.- 98 replies

I'd have posted the New Mexico State AD, but they got a new one last year. The one prior didn't care if they lost, and said so publicly. UTEP actually has decent basketball, so...you still win.

Fantastic. Looks like the winner will be the one whose QB turns the ball over least, and can have enough long enough punt returns to get into field goal position more. We have two great punters; so, maybe that will help our defense.
-
Sorry. They're all fine. Here's something that's not a joke, though: all three are FCS or D-II QBs on scholarship at an FBS school. They're all doing better than they deserve. Much better. If they don't like the slings and arrows of being an FBS QB, they can voluntarily give up their scholarships. Here's something else that's not a joke: Marshall adding their names to the long list of school that will demolish us this year because none of those three should be on scholarship at an FBS school. See, there...I can be serious.

What's your "safest" HC pick?

"Canales and Smith both credited backup quarterbacks Andrew McNulty and Josh Greer for helping get Smith ready to play last week." Well...that explains the turnovers and low completion percentage.

Well, at least you can't say he hasn't tried all the angles: -Shocking high school coach, splashy hire: check -Experience head coach: check -Defensive minded coach: check High school coach got nowhere in the win-loss column. But, his last two signing classes were good. Experience head coach/defensive-minded coach got us to one bowl game and won it. But, quickly reverted back to the 1-2 win plateau of the high school coach. So, that only leaves the combination not tried: youngish assistant coach who is an offensive coordinator. Other combinations not yet tried: -NFL coach with no coordinator experience in college or pro -Position coach who has never had been a coordinator anywhere -Retired head coach who has been sitting it out a few years -Special teams coach -CFL coach...in the mid-1980s, Abilene Christian rolled with a former CFL head coach, John Payne.
-
Our problem is the opposite - all are physically able to play, but none have the talent to do so at this level! So...it's a push. Bet on the kickers and punters and returners winning this game for one team or the other. How's your special teams' play?
-
I'm not sure why a young coach like Cornelsen would eschew a higher paycheck simply on the word of a man who hasn't been at a school for about a decade. Surely, he'd ask Dickey. But...North Texas' athletic department has come a long way since 2006 in facilities, pay for assistant coaches...and, official black uniforms! My guess is Cornelsen goes wherever Fuente goes after this season, then interviews for the Tulsa job after Montgomery is picked up by a bigger fish.

That gets in the way of the narrative on this board, though. The will of the dozen or so that post here regularly is supposed to influence the school more than people who have given hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. Get with it, bro...it's all message board revolutions these days. The revolution will certainly not be televised. And, even if it were, how would would find it with so many channels? If it's on Longhorn Network, you'd have never seen it anyway. Also, in a like manner, I doubt that whomever this "Gang of 17" is spends time reading a college sports message board.
