Question for older alumni and lifelong fans
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Matt from A700's topic in Mean Green Football
$637,000. Plus, tips...monetary only, not advice. Paid once a year annually in a giant shoe box full of frogs. -

QB Coleman Key Transferring
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
Agree, based on watching 5'10" Baker Mayfield. He's short, and his mechanics are horrible. But...he is disciplined about when to throw and when not to force a bad pass. Also, we say all too often that this guy or that guy has a "strong arm." Mayfield truly does have a strong arm. Very few of his passes flutter. They are tight and quick. Little QBs can get it done...if they have more tools than just "he's athletic"...the stupid code word for "he pulls the ball down and runs with it." -
Coach Littrell on Tulsa 1430 The Buzz

Nothing. But, I like Stoops' on the field track record moreso than Leach's. -
True. My nine-year old son has a new favorite football/baseball/basketball player/team every time he turns on the TV.

QB Coleman Key Transferring
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
He completed 47.7% of his passes; DaMarcus completed 46.9%. It's a push. We're obviously not getting a JUCO at the break. So, what would it hurt to bring in another guy who can't hit 50% of his passes? I swear, some people here are like beaten dogs. Any QB anywhere who transfers has them salivating. If Littrell and his staff ever get around to recruiting, let's hope he gets someone better than guys that we already know weren't able to do the job somewhere else. -
Coach Littrell on Tulsa 1430 The Buzz
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
Sounds like he learned his interviewing skills from Stoops, not Leach. Hopefully, he will coach more like Stoops than Leach. -
And, those guys had the same thing to sell - helicopter or not. Maybe if he'd use one of these, he'd get the attention of some more highly-rated prospects: He can probably get one on ebay for a good $200 - $400. By the way, I never saw the problem with Cavan. The guy damn near broke even in conference with them after the SWC disbanded. Derek Dooley and Darrel Dickey both blossomed from his rather small "coaching tree." Also, he coached with the dad of one of my good friends at Georgia under Papa Dooley. His claim to fame was winning the recruiting battle for Herschel Walker.

What are you worried about? His recruiting class is still nothing but 2-star recruits with three or four three star guys. There's no bigger snow job than the one Chad Morris has pulled on the football dolts over at SMU. It's SMU...let them waste as much money as they want on their 2-star recruits, okay?

Harrell will still coach in Sun Bowl
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to All About UNT's topic in Mean Green Football
It's beginning to smack to me of "it's just North Texas, we'll get to it when we get to it." Dodge did the same thing. Mucho attrition from his first recruiting class as well. -
As stated before, we will someday share a conference with Abilene Christian - them moving up, or us moving down. Bank it.

Littrell Targeting Graham Harrell as OC
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
Agree. Plus it's two hires with three total years of experience. An OC who has never been an OC at any level. I really did expect that the coordinators would be guys with plenty of experience doing it. I'm not crazy about UNT being the proving ground for a bunch of new coaches, as if we can't attract experienced coaches. Again, I like the hire of Seth. But, we're not generally facing teams whose defensive coaches and coordinators have little or no experience. During Littrell's speech after the hiring, he said that he wouldn't just look to people he knew well for assistant coaches. So far, though, that's exactly what he's done. If the majority of coaches hired have little or no experience, this thing will turn into Dodge II, trading one win seasons for three to five win seasons. If RV isn't already sunk, two or three more losing seasons should more than do the job. And, you can still count the number of conference titles they have - in total - on one hand. Maybe even a hand that's missing some fingers. -
We're not really pretending that opposing coaches haven't seen this offense again are we? I mean, so much so that we just think any mouth-breather will do as position coaches. I remember this same conversation when Dodge was hired: "We're doing something revolutionary on offense!"...completely looking past the fact that no one on his coaching staff knew what the hell they were doing. Every college coach in America had already seen the spread and its variants for more than half a decade. Most now are running some form of it themselves, so the defenses see it in practice every day. It's 2015, not 1999. Wishbone was new in 1969, not so much in 1985 or 1995. My concern isn't that we'll score more points because it would be extremely difficult to score less than we did this year...even with the same personnel. My concern is the coaches recognizing what is happening on the field during the game so that adjustments can be made against the opposing defenses. Our 2014 coaching staff seemed to either: (1) lack the ability to recognize what was happening, (2) recognize what was happening, but lacking the personnel to do anything about it, or (3) a mixture of both. My opinion is we had more of (2) than (1). So, I'm not looking into dumbing down either side of the coaching staff with less experienced coaches. I know that in the Bible, Jesus went with 12 inexperienced guys. But, Littrell's name is Seth, not Jesus...at least not yet.
-
Really, after less than one year of coaching, he's a recruiting "specialist?"
-
One whole year of coaching experience is all this guy has? And, it's "Offensive Quality Control?" I like the hire of Seth Littrell and all, but...let's hope the other hires have a longer resume in actual coaching, not just bouncing around in NFL and Arena League training camps before getting cut, then disappearing for four years.

Chico Canales To Tennessee?
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Eagle-96's topic in Mean Green Football
Crazy how that works, right? The truth is simply this: Thompson, a son of a coach, was willing to be coached and understood the benefits of working hard. All other QBs at North Texas not named Thompson during Canales' tenure, not so much. Credit both Thompson and Canales for 2013. Credit Canales for trying with every QB signed by Mac. But, because it's a two way street - coach coaching, player studying and working - many kids made Canales look bad. I'll always hold that Canales' problem is that he was too nice. He gave the QBs too much leeway. I'll just go ahead and get this out of the way - no way in hell DaMarcus goes into Seth Littrell's office and starts hollering at him...especially after not working hard or watching game film for two months. Mac and Canales should have given DaMarcus the boot right then and there. Mac probably knew he was out the door anyway. And, Chico was too nice to do it. The results were not any different with DaMarcus than they were with McNulty, so it wouldn't have made a difference. I hope Canales does well. I think Butch Jones is in over his head at Tennessee, and they'll boot him with one more slip/losing season. So, Chico's stay there could be a very short one, if he's hired. -
MGB Littrell presser follow-up thoughts

No. SMU's class this year is about a carbon copy of last year...and 2014: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2016 SMU 2015: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2015 2014: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2014 2013: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2013 2012: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2012 2011: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2011 2010: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2010 2009: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2009 2008: https://rivals.yahoo.com/smu/football/recruiting/commitments/2008 Jones and Morris has almost identical first classes. Second class, Morris' is about the same as last year. Jones, on the other hand, landed one four-star and seven three-star prospects his second time around. Morris is nowhere near Jones at the same juncture in their tenures. So, again...if the bar is SMU, please set it higher. Clemson did not seem to miss a beat when Morris left, either, did they? -
MGB Littrell presser follow-up thoughts
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
SMU's recruiting hasn't changed. And, when you look back at what June Jones did, it's even slipped down as far as where the classes were ranked/"star" players. Morris isn't even close to where Jones was. Posted a few weeks back, if the bar is set at what SMU/Morris did in his first year, the bar is set too low. -
Now that the dust has settled.......
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
Another former Sooner player who has coached on the defensive side of the ball is now available, Chris Wilson. Wilson is a longtime DL coach and was the defensive coordinator at Mississippi State from 2010-2012. Maybe Littrell gives him a look. USC's Helton cut him and several other coaches loose following the Pac-12 Championship Game. 2015, Southern Cal: 45th in Rush Defense, 15th sacks, DL coach, record so far 8-5, Pac-12 Championship Game 2014, Southern Cal: 35th in Rush Defense, 32nd sacks, DL coach, final record 9-4 2013, Georgia: 41st in Rush Defense, 29th sacks, DL coach, final record 8-5 2012, Mississippi State: 69th in Rush Defense, 100th sacks, 62nd Yards Allowed, 34th Points Allowed, DL and DC,final record 8-5 2011, Mississippi State: 65th in Rush Defense, 43rd Sacks, 43rd Yards Allowed, 16th Points Allowed, DL and DC, final record 7-6 2010, Mississippi State: 15th in Rush Defense, 59th Sacks, 52nd Yards Allowed, 21 Points Allowed, DL and Co-DC, final record 9-4 2009, Oklahoma, 7th Sacks, DE coach/ST Coordinator, final record 8-5 2008, Oklahoma, 3rd Sacks, DE coach/ST Coordinator, final record 12-2, Big 12 Championship Game, National Title Game 2007, Oklahoma, 30th Sacks, DE coach/ST Coordinator, final record 11-3, Big 12 Championship Game 2006, Oklahoma, 57th Sacks, DE coach, final record 11-3, Big 12 Championship Game 2005, Oklahoma, 3rd Sacks, DE coach, final record 8-4 2004, Colorado, 84th Rush Defense, 37th Sacks, DL coach, final record 8-5, Big 12 Championship Game 2003, Colorado, DL coach, final record 5-7 2002, Colorado, DL coach, final record 9-5, Big 12 Championship Game 2001, Colorado, DL coach, final record 10-3, Big 12 Championship Game 2000, Colorado, DL coach, final record 3-8 2000 with Colorado was his first season D-I/FBS. Over the past 16 seasons: -14 as part of winning programs -14 bowl games, including three Fiesta Bowls, and one national title game -7 Conference titles games: One with USC, three a piece with Oklahoma and Colorado, 4 winners Product of Richardson (TX) High School Has Coached in Big 12, SEC, and Pac-12 Guy has a ton of experience in the P5, more than Littrell. Has recruited the region and South for years, West Coast for USC. With 16 years in a row at P5 schools, you'd be hard-pressed to say that C-USA coaches would show him some sort of offense he hasn't already seen from the wide open attacks in the Big 12 and Pac 12, to the ground and pound old schoolers of the SEC. Hope he gets an interview...selfishly, a little, because I also grew up in Richardson. -

HarringtonFishSmeller replied to StealthEagle84's topic in Mean Green Football
Worried about that as well. While Littrell has been at many places where they have scored points, those places have also given up many points: 2010, Arizona: 33rd in Yards Allowed, 41st Points Allowed, final record 7-6 2011, Arizona: 101st in Yards Allowed, 107th Points Allowed, final record 4-8, Coach Mike Stoops fired before end of season. 2012, Indiana: 97th in Yards Allowed, 104th Points Allowed, final record 4-8 2013, Indiana: 124th in Yards Allowed, 117th Points Allowed, final record 5-7, Littrell hired by North Carolina 2014, North Carolina: 118th in Yards Allowed, 119th Points Allowed, final record 6-7 2015, North Carolina: 100th in Yards Allowed, 35th Points Allowed, record so far, 11-2 As you can see, despite all of the accolades Littrell has received for his side of the ball, every team he's been on as OC has not had a good defense. Combined record of the schools he's been OC at: 37-38. What is the reason for UNC's turn around this year? Probably that former Texas DC and Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was hired as DC last December. Tar Heels still gave up a bunch of yards this year, but their Points Allowed was way down - 119th to 35th. Record of schools Littrell's been at without Chizik as DC: 26-36. So, until this season, his mentors had not done a great job of shoring up the defensive side of the ball. Hope that made some sort of impression on him. As posted last week and reiterated this morning, scoring and "exciting" offense is all well and good...unless, you can't stop anyone on the other side of the ball. It's clear that Littrell knows how to help an offense score. The question is, will he hire a DC who will complement that...so that we don't relive the Dodge years of high schools and yardage total...to go along with many losses. Key hire among coaching staff, then: Defensive coordinator -
Littrell press conference thoughts
HarringtonFishSmeller replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Can't make a prediction on his first year until we see who will be vying for the starting QB spot. Also, keep an eye, in particular, on whom the DC will be.
