Are we not signing a transfer QB?
GMG_Dallas replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
Something to remember with DL is we also have last year's class who will be in their second season at UNT, including Alobwede (DL), Keith Smith (DL), Rodney Green (DL), and Marcus Moore (DL). Alobwede and Moore both saw some playing time and Smith will be a redshirt freshman. I think we had 1 DL leave through the portal, being Chris Wright who has barely played, and 1 graduate being Mazin Richards. While I'm sure an "impact" DL transfer is being sought out, I'd imagine they're being cautious about who they go after because there's not as much of a need for depth at that position as we think. A big transfer, however, should always be welcomed. I think we're set at OL. I'd imagine QB is the focus as well as any potential big transfers who come available late. -
You bring up a good point about tax deductible donations. What happens when the government decides the NIL collective donations are not tax deductible because of how the funds are being used? Donations to schools for long-term infrastructure makes sense but donating to a collective to pay a salary is a different story. Are these mega donors still going to cut million dollar checks to NIL collectives if they can't write it off on their taxes?

Good for him if he gets to come home to play his final college years, even if it's not for our school. -

Yes but the supposed benefit of the 3-3-5 is that you can bring extra pressure from any of the defensive backs and because that, you can keep the QB guessing as to where it's going to come from or you can just drop everybody into coverage to keep the QB guessing. You can do this with other schemes but the 5 DBs is supposed to give more flexibility due to the increased speed and athleticism on the field. -

The point is once the top ACC schools bail, you're stuck with the same quality of opponent in conference play. -

Yes the extra DB is supposed to allow you to bring pressure from anywhere but we rarely seemed to do that successfully this past season. You can't drop 5+ into coverage and still allow big passing plays and have nobody finish tackles and so on. Recipe for disaster as we saw. -

They have a seat at the big table off brand name, sure, but it's a fact that they aren't nearly as well-off financially as the other big money schools. Might surprise some but they actually have the second smallest endowment of any ACC school narrowly edging out Louisville. They'll always have a seat saved for them at the big boy table thanks to their brand but right now, unless they can slash the cost to leave the ACC by a significant margin and/or the big boosters band together, I really doubt they're financially capable of leaving the ACC. -

I somewhat agree with this as it pertains to the run game, guys weren't executing tackles. I do have an issue with the 3 man as it pertains to containment of mobile quarterbacks. Too many times this past season I watched an end get pressure only for a mobile QB to escape and there be nobody to finish off the play. In other words, a "coverage sack" doesn't seem to exist with a 3 man front. What's the solution to that? Is it linebackers doing a better job of jumping into the backfield when they see the opposing QB is scrambling? Or should we expect to see more pass blitzing from the DB position now that we have more size and athleticism at that position? -

Not to pick sides but SMU has nearly three times the endowment of Florida State. I'm sure Florida State could raise a ton of money for this but it's becoming increasingly apparent that if Florida State had F.U. money, they would have already left the ACC. The truth is, they do not have that kind of money. -

And when they're all gone, SMU can play football with Syracuse who USF just blew out 45-0 yesterday in their bowl game. -
Are we not signing a transfer QB?
GMG_Dallas replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm skeptical for the reasons you stated but I'd be excited about the size and athleticism. With the offensive line and running back transfers, adding a mobile QB like Braxton can make for an incredible run game that can hurt defenses multiple ways. Make them bring the safeties in to help run defense and receivers will have more space to run which would hopefully help limit tight-window throws. We'll see what happens but I think these coaches would find ways to make the offense explosive with his skill set. -

If he stays at Texas but never starts, it'll be interesting to see what happens post college. Does he still get a shot at the NFL off his name? If he does and has success, will that open the door for other top recruits to ride the bench at big money programs and then go pro? I've heard on the radio that his family is against him transferring based on the principle that you should wait and earn playing time where you're at instead of bouncing around. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out. -
Oh wow! Very excited about this RB room.

Are we not signing a transfer QB?
GMG_Dallas replied to meangreenfaninno's topic in Mean Green Football
I get what you're saying but I see no difference in a redshirt freshman transfer who has, say, 20 career FBS passing attempts transferring in where he'll have to learn our system vs a true freshman having to learn the system. If we can get a guy who started 10ish games and had some success, that's different to an extent. Then you have to wonder why he's transferring and if he's a fit here. Just think we need to stop assuming a transfer QB will fix all our concerns. -

Who compared resumes? Rogers came in with 1 year of FBS starting experience and was coached up to do great things. Everybody is unproven at some point so that's the difference in a true freshman QB and a transfer with limited experience? I personally would like to see the Tulsa QB come in to this offense due to his size and athleticism but this most recent season, he completed 44% of his passes with 2 TDs and 6 interceptions. His 2 seasons show he has accuracy issues. It's all a gamble unless we get a transfer with legit full-time QB1 experience. -

Being established and have previous experience are two different things, IMO. Just a difference in opinion I guess. Back to the original issue, if Cash McCollum is here in the spring, I see no reason to believe he can't commit for QB1 if nobody else is brought in. -
Awesome! Thanks. I've always felt the way to build an offense is through an elite offensive line and run game. I'm excited about these recruits.

That's what I figured but wanted to check with the guy with insider information.
