I think Alec Morris was an anomaly this year and not the norm at least when it comes to QBs transferring to CUSA. La Tech has had immense success with grad transfers recently and WKU's qb is a transfer although not from a P5. UTEP had a qb transfer in from A$M who is on the cowboys practice squad who gave the miners a few good years by their standards. I wouldn't expect most P5 transfers coming to CUSA to have the same impact as Morris has here.

Two things needed to build any Football Program
GMG_Dallas replied to GMG24's topic in Mean Green Football
Their RS Freshman starting QB finished the season with 2836 passing yards on 62.8% completion with 16 passing TDs and 9 interceptions, 486 rushing yards and 7 rushing TDs making 23 totals Tds to 9 interceptions. By the way, he had 8 interceptions in his first 5 career starts including 5 against Virginia and had 1 interception the final 7 games. I'd say they have hope and his name is Daniel Jones. -
Wren Baker on Bowl Game Possibilities

Thank you. I agree to disagree with everybody about Navy. Everything from here is gravy so I want us to play the toughest opponent available for the highest possible reward. Just my opinion though. let's enjoy this bowl season! GMG -

South Alabama might be more winnable and that's exactly what cost Mississippi State their season opener. The issue to me is we can play a team like South Alabama but if we lose, that kind of loss will be more detrimental to our program than a loss to Navy no matter what the margin is. Win against a team like South Alabama and no one care. Win against Navy and everybody is paying attention. High risk high reward but right now, any bowl opponent is high risk but some opponents like South Alabama provide low reward. I agree and I did not try to imply that. They have beat good teams this year like Houston. They've also skimmed by bad teams. Nobody goes 9-2 with a realistic shot at 11-2 by accident but if you can beat their system and force turnovers, you can beat them. They aren't a team that no matter how good we plan, we'll still get stomped. -
If we don't win by double digits or worst, lose, Benford needs to pack his bags after the game for not being able to coach D1 basketball players to outperform a JUCO basketball team (no disrespect to them). Struggling against Texas College is a bigger problem than not having a player for a game.

I actually applaud Benford, the professor, and Reese for all doing this. UNT is after all a university and not just a basketball program or athletic department. We're also playing Texas College, not like it's a conference game or a big opponent. I'm sure if the game were more important, the university would intervene and allow Reese to play. I just don't think it's worth pulling a kid out of class for a non-conference game against a Juco college in November...

ESPN report says Navy could play the Cotton Bowl if they win the AAC title game. Hold your horses, folks. Navy is Top 25 but this isn't some SEC or Big 10 program who is bigger, faster, and stronger than you. Their system is rare in today's football and is hard to defend against. This year, Navy beat UConn (3-9) 28-24 and Tulane (4-8) 21-14. They didn't crush everybody. They're not going to bully you around the field. They just play smart and disciplined. You can beat a team like Navy with a sound gameplan and strong execution. That isn't always the case against the more consistent Top 25 teams. This is actually one of the few chances were a team like we have can compete with a Top 25 team because of who they are and how they got there. This is one of the few games you can play against a Top 25 team where you aren't going to lose because you will get dominated on the LOS. This is an opportunity to take. -
I'm sure the players and fans were happy to go bowling but that's such a disrespect to them. You reward the players' hard work with an opponent they'll most likely play the following season. Lazy. Wouldn't happen to a P5 program unless it was in the CFPs.

How does La Tech against UNT even make sense for a bowl game. We play in the same conference...

@UNT90 Would he consider walking on if needed? I don't have any insight, just asking out of curiosity. If he want to plays FBS football and that is the only option he has, is he willing to go that route? -

How's their running game? -
This is Navy we're talking about here. A team that is currently 9-2 and will play Temple and Army in the next 2 weeks. They could very well finish 11-2. Even a beatdown wouldn't be the end of the world. It's not like we would be losing 56 points to a 3-9 Iowa State like Texas Tech did. That's shameful.
-
My expectations are set. My original post said IF we can play Navy like we played Army, the game could be close or we could even win. Key is, if we play them like we played Army. Lot of time to prepare if that's who we draw. Regardless, I think the benefits of played local and against a strong opponent will be better for us than playing some no-name far away from home. I pick Navy in Ft Worth if I had to. No shame in losing to this Navy team even if you lose by double digits.

I was just looking at overall team rushing defense stats and Houston is number 2 in the country behind Alabama. Houston allowed 1175 total rushing yards (2.9 YPC, also 2nd behind Bama) all year but allowed 306 against Navy and 4.9 YPC. If it wasn't for 306 rushing yards, Houston would have beat them, right? The point of me bringing this to the conversation is strange things happen in any given game. Houston, who had a great run defense this year, had a bad game. I'm sure you watched the game against Army. We FORCED most of those turnovers and if it wasn't for a knee or elbow down here or there we would have forced more. It's not like Army handed the game. Our defense was aggressive in going after the football. Army, like Houston against Navy, had a bad game. Let's make Navy have a bad game if we meet.
-
With a team like Navy, you really can't look at how they've beat other teams and what that means for you. You can either slow them down or you can't. With them, it's not a question of athleticism, it's a cerebral game. Scores reflect that. If we can play them like we played Army (forcing turnovers and playing disciplined ball), we have a chance to play a close game or even win. We just can't play them like we played UTEP who by the way got pounded by Army (60 something to 10?) and we beat Army by double digits...
-
Defensive stats are very impressive as well. Per his Maxpreps page, he finished the year with 101 tackles (86 solo), 2 sacks, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles. Exciting stuff regardless of his size.

6 TDs and 330 rushing yards for Tyreke Davis these past 2 week. Crazy... Can't wait for him to sign.

The complete bowl eligibility breakdown
GMG_Dallas replied to @UNTSportsFan's topic in Mean Green Football
They address Army earlier in the article stating Army would be placed after the others because two of their wins are against FCS teams. Again, don't know the validity of the statement, just providing what the USA Today believes to be the case. -
The complete bowl eligibility breakdown
GMG_Dallas replied to @UNTSportsFan's topic in Mean Green Football
@Texas Stranger We are priority for a bowl game per USA Today. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2016/11/27/bowl-eligibility-picture-college-football/94510318/ "That opens the door for 5-7 finishers. Those teams are selected by multi-year APR rankings. North Texas and Mississippi State have the two highest scores in that group and are guaranteed an opportunity to play in a bowl. The Bulldogs have the same APR (971) as Texas, however they have priority based on the most recent single-year APR." -
