How many road games will UNT win in 2016?
GMG_Dallas replied to Matt from A700's topic in Mean Green Football
I'm not expecting Fine to do the same or better against better (I'll say it) competition. Like I said, he hasn't been the best on pass plays. I just don't think you can say for certain he would have been worst. I mean, throwing 3 interceptions against SMU is pretty poor already. I think where Fine would have changed the game is the excitement he brings to the team and the running element. As I said, you don't what would have happened. What we do know is we went heavy on the run against BC and it worked. We went pass heavy against SMU and it didn't work. In hindsight, if we would have started Fine against SMU, we probably would have gone run heavy and that's where our strength is. The outcome might not have been different, but it probably would have been a closer game. Who knows. Time will tell how much better, if at all, Fine is than Morris. As of right now, there is nothing that indicates starting Fine would have been worst. -

SMU did dominate that game for the most part but if you put Fine in there, do we throw 3 interceptions? Does he check out of a running play to throw an interception on 4th and 1 keeping in mind that SMU scored a TD on that drive. While I agree that SMU dominated for the most part, SMU scored 10 points off 2 interceptions of the 3 interceptions. I don't think you can say for certain that game wouldn't have had a different outcome had Fine started. He hasn't been the best on pass plays, but he sure has managed the game well and added the element of a mobile QB to handle for opposing defenses. We don't know but as of right now, nothing indicates starting Fine against SMU would have resulted in a worst score. The question is, how much better would the score have been. -
With the way our WRs are playing so far, I'm thinking tossing Pirtle out there might be a good idea. He and Mason obviously have chemistry and it might help Mason ease into being the starting QB a bit more. He doesn't need to be in the 2-deep but let him in on a few snaps here and there. Has anybody heard anything about him so far this season?

Here's him with his buddies.

Army CB Brandon Jackson died in a car crash hours after their win over Rice. Had 3 interceptions and 62 tackles last year as a freshman and 6 tackles with 2 pass breakups so far this year. Tough to see somebody go at such a young age. Just thought I would mention this as we will be playing them soon and hope we can find a way to pay our respect to the young man. http://247sports.com/Bolt/Report-Army-Black-Knights-DB-Brandon-Jackson-dies-in-car-crash-47412406 Edit: Thought I would add that if you have watched the Mason & Jason story on Youtube, you know that Mason and Jason lost a close friend and teammate their freshman year of high school whom the team called Big Kale in a car crash as well. They (the whole team) honored him every game throughout Mason and Jason's high school career. I'm sure this will hit home to them two as well if they catch wind of it.

4 winnable games. I picked 2 but could be any 2 out of: Rice, UTSA, UTEP, Army If we can win 3 road games this could end up a decent season. -
Official Bethune Cookman UNT GMG Game Thread
GMG_Dallas replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Minus the 83 yard run, the defense played really well. Speaking of that run, the QB is Arkevious Williams, a 3 star DT QB per 247 in this past year's recruiting class. Per 247, BC was his only offer. Wonder why... -
I'm assuming your not referring to his Heart of Dallas Bowl ring (if they got any, heard it was something else they got).

Official Bethune Cookman UNT GMG Game Thread
GMG_Dallas replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
He seemed to be letting his right arm hang very gingerly after his last few runs. Hopefully nothing serious. -
I'm sure he'll be there next Saturday.

We'll find out in two weeks if Rice is just that bad or if Army (and western Kentucky) is just really good. Until then, just another thrashing of Rice.
-
5 minutes into the game and Louisville is up 21-0 on Syracuse. Houston plays Louisville this year so that should be fun to watch.

MGB: Details of UNT's contract with Bethune-Cookman
GMG_Dallas replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Only because I read an article in the Orlando newspaper about their qb, I'm saying they are in Orlando or a suburb of Orlando. -
If we are up big, early (mid second), I hope we see Fine. Assuming we are still up big early fourth quarter, I want to see O'hara and/or Shanbour. No point in risking injury to Fine at that point and it would be nice to know what we have with the other two in case Morris gets hurt and one has to backup Fine.

Completely agree with the expect to win always mentality. I'm not happy we lost to SMU. I don't care if it's only been one game and that he might be rusty, Morris was disappointing. We made some bad defensive mistakes and I can't help but think about the play where their RB broke a long run only to cramp up (my stream froze but that's what I'm told happened). The score should have been worst. We didn't play well. We also didn't give up. This is a young coaching staff with good experience. I'm optimistic they will get this roster playing up to their potential by the end of the year. I just don't want us to look at what other new coaches are doing at other schools and say we should be doing the same. Our situation had to be the worst in colleges football to inherit. Be demanding but patient. Expect the best while being understanding when that's not what you get. I'm excited for Saturday. GMG

I'm getting pretty tired of seeing posts like this. Texas state upset Ohio. We didn't upset SMU. It's not a big deal (for now). Let's let the season play out. I'm not saying this to justify us losing to SMU but I think they're a bowl team this year not because they have improved a bunch (Although they do have some very nice pieces in place) but I think they have enough stars to get them to 6 wins and other than Houston, the conference is pretty open this year. Memphis lost Paxton Lynch and Temple has already lost incidicating they might have fallen off a bit considering their strong start last year. Back to last year's SMU schedule, they played 7 8+ win teams, at least 3 of which won 10+ games (not sure about TCU and Baylor). Their 2-10 is hard to judge when you consider their schedule overall. Ohio went bowling last year but they're schedule was significantly easier than SMU's with their toughest opponent being Minnesota. Let's not look at these two games with much significance just yet. Let the season play out (and even a few years) before judging who made the better hire. McCarney looked like a great hire on the field through 2013. Hindsight says otherwise. Thanks in advance for the downvotes.

Expectations for the rest of the season
GMG_Dallas replied to untjim1995's topic in Mean Green Football
We're all counting you. Despite the loss to SMU, we need to remember a few things: 1) this team has fight (so far). 2) although we all dislike SMU, they might not be as bad a football team as we think. They've got some good skill players and Sutton is special. 3) they are a year ahead in rebuilding 4) they've had really solid recruiting classes the past two years. Ben Hicks, who threw the 88 yard TD pass was a four star QB per ESPN in 2015. It's too early to view this game as an indication of a terrible year. -

4-8 at best. I thought we would beat SMU. Still think we beat BC, Rice, UTSA, and maybe Florida (just kidding!). But there's another win out there. My only hesitance with us beating Rice, UTSA, and UTEP is they are all away games and we all know how we play away from our home field (not well). Another issue with Rice is playing them the week after Florida. How banged up will our guys be? They play Baylor the week before so I'm not sure if that's any better. I guess we'll see... -
Looked pretty good although garbage time play.

Heard that. The stadium looks pretty empty. Scratch that, looks to be filling up a bit on the last view I saw.

Up and running for me!

UVA getting beat pretty bad by FCS Richmond.

Louisiana Lafayette getting destroyed by Boise st at home 35-3 at half.

And released a 2015 5th round pick from Carrollton: Ryan Russell. Back to Akunne, with his hit on Goff I think he'll garner some interest from other teams. Other than that game he still had a strong preseason.
