As a die hard Cowboys fan, it's pretty crazy to see the resemblance in the two teams so far. Both have first year qbs who not many people thought they could make the transition to the new competition level without a year or two of learning behind vets. Both QBs have made smart decisions and done a good job not turning the ball over. They have not lit up the stat sheet but they've played really good games. Both teams were excepted to have decent secondaries with struggles on the d line and both defenses have performed admirably overall. I could keep going (o line injuries, allowing big special teams plays, etc...) but there's no need to. I guess the sentiment is you play the game for a reason.

Why are we still considering UTSA winnable but not Southern Miss? UTSA just beat them pretty handily... They're both winnable at this point...

Defense came to play against Marshall tonite
GMG_Dallas replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Marshall rushed for 13 yards on 28 carries. -
I said it before and I'll say it again, he didn't want us at our worst, I don't want him now.

Question: if Brice English is as advertised and we develop hambone and some others as well as reel in another juco or two for a LB or d line spot, is there any reason to believe a really dominant defense couldn't alone get us to bowl eligibility next year? Obviously they can't just play full games but if we do get these the easier side of c-usa next year, would a really dominant defense be enough?

Official Marshall Game Score Prediction Thread
GMG_Dallas replied to MeanGreenTexan's topic in Mean Green Football
If he was already concussed during the Akron game but stayed in, that would explain all the interceptions/fumbles. I didn't watch the game so I don't if that's the case but if it is, that could potentially explain the Akron game. If he was hurt on this play http://www.espn.com/video/clip?id=17570695 and it was early in the second quarter with plenty of time for him to throw the game away with poor decisions. Don't know, just speculating. -

How Many MORE Games Do You Expect To Win?
GMG_Dallas replied to Cerebus's topic in Mean Green Football
Get what you're saying but Marshall's only win is against an FCS team. Had Rice played an FCS team to start off the year, they would probably have at least 1 win as well. Instead, Rice started off against Western Kentucky, Army, Baylor, us, and Southern Miss. Not sure our record would be any different had we played those teams to start off the season. By season's end, we will be better, but to start off? We would probably be 0-5 or 1-4 too (win against Rice). Marshall is better than their record indicates though... -
Good point about the QB being hurt. Completely forgot he was also out against Louisville and they played them as close as anybody this year minus the Clemson game...

I watched most of the second half of their game against Pitt and it was a bit of both. After scoring on the opening drive of the second half (first score of the game for Marshall), they recovered an onside kick and scored on that drive. They had an 83 yard TD play a few drives later. After Marshall brought it to within 3, Pitt woke up again. I'll say this, during that second half, the Marshall defense was pretty stingy. They also weren't on the field for quite some time to start the 3rd quarter with converting the onside kick and all. Where this game scares me is our ability to close games. If, for some reason the football Gods smile on us, we have a decent lead heading to the third quarter, Marshall's coaching staff will be aggressive. In addition to the onside kick, they converted on 4th down twice. In all reality though, this is a Marshall team who, like us, does now know what they have yet. They are 1-3 and yes, two of those loses are against Pitt and Louisville, but other than that, they beat an FCS school and loss (badly) to Akron (side note, they started the year on a bye week like we did last year). Looking at scores, I would assume Pitt plays to their competition's level so even though Marshall played them tough in the second half, I'm not sure that game means much. It was, after all, 27-0 Pitt after one half of play. Long story short, Marshall probably doesn't really know who they are yet. A win against us probably won't say much unless they blow us out, but a loss could be telling of tough times for the Herd. Let's hope the team with the better Green wins this one.

I didn't check and added the sports pack. Game is not in :(. Hopefully it'll stream on my phone.

I'm assuming you're a cop. Unfortunately, the media needs to make money. Feel good stories don't make money. Sucks but it's true. As my brother, a Dallas police officer, told me before I applied for the DPD and has told me over and over and over again: "Don't expect a thank you from anybody. If that's what you want, go find it elsewhere."

My internet won't be setup until Monday. Unfortunately where I am moving to, the internet providers that go out that far are very limited and we could not get internet through DirectTV. I'm hoping I can watch it on my phone if anything. We'll see! Appreciate letting me know though. I'm learning about new features every day.
-
@UNT90 This helps a lot. Thank you. Hopefully I can get access to the channel before game time. Internet won't be hooked up until Monday, just my luck with this game being streamed on Twitter...
-
That you know of, does direct tv have a sports pack that includes these channels? I'm moving tomorrow and will have direct tv connected in the afternoon so I can't look at the additional packages available until my setup is complete... The only info I can find is regarding the nfl Sunday ticket, MLB network, and specific soccer packages...

I was about to comment the same thing. They have a good PROGRAM. Tony Levine finished 8-5 twice in three years and was let go after the third year despite them winning their bowl game against Pitt. They have high expectations and even when they were down, there were still good (recently).

I don't feel like arguing this any further after this post. I feel like those responding against UH having value are acting out of bias and not looking at the facts. Regarding northern Illinois, they never had a recruiting class during their run like Houston has had recently. Regarding prolonged success, since 2006, Houston has had: - four 10+ win seasons, two of which were 13 win seasons - four 8 win seasons - two losing seasons, both of which were 5-7 years. That's the worst they could get. 5-7. While putting two coaches in the big 12, one now in the SEC. Not as good as TCU had during their stretch but certainly a good stretch. And with their recruiting classes, they Will experience continued success.

Because this G5 school is ranked 6th in the nation, easily handled Florida State last year, beat Lousiville last year, blanked Vanderbilt 34-0 last year, beat OU this year, has a decent chance of beating Louisville this year too. If they go undefeated, Houston will be in the playoffs therefore, this G5 school and the AAC conference will have had the exact same amount of BIG 12 playoff representatives since the beginning of this system: 1. I'm assuming your comment is a joke.
-
I agree with you that they are scared but I don't understand the logic. As of right now, the BIG 12 will not have a team in the playoffs until a BIG 12 team goes undefeated and/or beats solid OOC opponents the same year (unless another P5 conference has a terrible year as well). ESPN recently did a ranking of P5 conferences and they did not include the BIG 12 because everybody agreed they were the weakest link. While adding Houston will make recruiting even tougher and Houston will turn into a real powerhouse, it's not like Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and most of the other BIG 12 teams have a chance at the college football playoffs anyways unless they have an undefeated season. The BIG 12 is pretty poorly perceived right now. Adding Houston would bring more legitimacy to the conference. It would actually help them as a whole. Maybe I'm completely off. Regardless, I just don't get it...

Explaining the Mediocrity of Mean Green Football
GMG_Dallas replied to EagleGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
He would be no different than Mac was with us. Getting close to retirement and doesn't have the fire to make a program great anymore. I don't disagree that Les Miles wouldn't be valuable here, just that his top recruiter is doing poorly at UTSA. So far, UTSA looks to be on the way just like we are.- 25 replies

Explaining the Mediocrity of Mean Green Football
GMG_Dallas replied to EagleGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
His first season just started just like ours. Not sure how you can look the first 4 games of the year and say he isn't setting the world on fire therefore he's a bad recruiter. As of right now, UTSA has the top recruiting class in C-USA for 2017 and ranked 61 nationally per 247. http://utsa.247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/Commits Yes, that'll probably go down with the 4 star kid going away (assuming his scholarship offer gets pulled). They have 17 commits so far. I'm as much of a UNT homer as the next guy but give credit where it's due. So far, their head coach is out recruiting our entire conference and he's been around as long as our staff has. Edit: Their current recruiting score per 247 would have them ranked 3rd in C-USA in last year's recruiting. Number 2 last year was UAB who could offer a clean slate and a fresh start to anybody out there so you could say his current recruiting class would have ranked number 2 last year.- 25 replies
